Assignment-Q1 (5 marks)
For one TT system, the phase conductor resistance ZPh is 0.1 ohm, the neutral conductor
resistance ZN is 0.2 ohm, and the earthing resistances of the source RN and installation RG
are 10 ohm and 100 ohm, respectively. This system with the voltage of 230V supplies the
load of 1000W. The resistance of the person is assumed 1 kohm. In the following four
cases:
1. A neutral-to-ground first fault occurs (Fig.1). 2. The first neutral-to-ground and the
second phase-to-ground faults occur simultaneously (Fig. 2). 3. At the occurrence of the
first neutral-to-ground fault, someone accidentally touches phase line (Fig. 3). 4.
Someone accidentally touches phase line (Fig. 4).
a). Draw their equivalent circuits. b). Calculate the residual currents which the RCD can
detect. c). Compare the residual currents for all these cases and discuss how they affect
the RCD. d). Can one RCD be chosen to trip for all these cases?
