A. DESCRIPTION

A.1 Introduction
The Union of Architects of Russia and DuPont announce an open competition of architectural
ideas:
“Changing the Face – Pushkinsky cinema”
Rebuilding the façade of an urban icon

The competition, jointly sponsored by the Union of Architects of Russia (UAR) and
DuPont, will be a single-phase event. Architizer (http://www.architizer.com) will be in charge of
running the competition, with UAR managing the judging and exhibition of the proposals.

The winning entry will receive a prize of €10,000, the two runners up will receive prizes of
€5,000 and €3,000 respectively. Comprehensive information on results of the competition will be
published on the web portal of the Union of Architects of Russia (UAR) (http://www.uar.ru),
Architizer, the Changing the Face website (changingtheface.com), and in socio-political media and
dedicated journals. In addition we hope to exhibit the competition entries in at least two exhibitions
to be held in Moscow and in a regional centre of Russia. The exhibition locations are currently to
be decided.

A.2 Aspiration
The main goal of the Competition is to rebuild the façade for the Pushkinsky Cinema
Hall. Participants will remake the marred exterior of the hall and bring it to a state befitting its
status as a pivotal venue of the Moscow International Film Festival, its position at the center of
Russia’s cultural life, and its status as a landmark of Pushkin Square, one of Moscow’s major
squares.

A.3 Objectives
Main objectives of the Competition:
- to solicit innovative architectural concepts for reconstructing the façade and outer
structure of the Pushkinsky Cinema Hall;
- to carry out the reconstruction using the most advanced and interesting materials and
technologies, including those by DuPont.
A.4 Proposed Project
The main goal of the project is to reconstruct the outer façade of the Pushkinsky Cinema
Hall. Alteration of the façade implies structural changes to the existing exterior walls, as well as
changing the face –

internal supports. The façade may be altered by using surface coating, by restoration, by applying
constructions of any type and size, or by using all the above together. Proposed solutions may go
beyond the building's walls as long as they stay within the premises. The building's interior must
remain within existing boundaries and cannot be modified or expanded using the building envelope
to be installed under the project. The building's framework must remain unaltered, however, when
necessary, additional supporting structures may be provided.
Each project should demonstrate a uniform and clear-cut concept of interaction between the
new look of the cinema hall and the historic city environment formed by Pushkin Square and the
adjacent streets, such as the Boulevard Ring, Tverskaya Street, B. Dmitrovka etc., and should
display how this new "look" is going to comply with the function of the nation's main cinema hall,
the "palace" of the Moscow International Film Festival.
Further technical information on the building (technical description, drawings, photographs,
etc.) is to be found after registration on the website of the Competition:
http://www.changingtheface.com.

A.5 Location
(Address: Pushkin Square, 2, metro stations: Chekhovskaya, Pushkinskaya, Tverskaya).
The Pushkinsky cinema hall is located at Pushkin Square, historically known as Strastnaya Square, in
the center of Moscow, at the junction of Tverskaya Street and the Boulevard Ring. This place is one
most favoured by Muscovites and visitors. The mini-park near the monument to A. S. Pushkin has
been a traditional venue for dates, business appointments, and friendly get-togethers.

A.6 Background
In the 16th century the Tver Gate of the White City stood at nearly the same spot that
the Pushkinsky cinema hall now occupies. Fifty years ago, in 1961, the nation's main cinema site,
the "palace" for the Moscow International Film Festivals (MIFF) was built at Pushkin Square. The
building has walk-around galleries and a balcony seamlessly blended into the layout of Pushkin
Square. "Russia" became the first multiplex wide-screen movie theatre in the USSR. The optimum
space-and-planning structure of the building proposed by architects is a logic continuation of
the functional and technological purpose of the facility. This project implemented by famous
Soviet architects Yu. N. Sheverdiayev, D. S. Solopov et al., strongly influenced all further
wide-screen movie theatre designs in the USSR.

Pushkinsky cinema

Its current name the Pushkinsky cinema hall was received in 1997 after a
comprehensive overhaul that involved all interior parts of the building. The auditorium seating
2056 was equipped with state-of-the-art Dolby Digital sound system, and featured the
Cinemaccanica projection technology. Today the Pushkinsky is the 'first-night' cinema hall
within the largest cinema distributing chain Karo-Film: it is here that all new movies to be
distributed across the chain are viewed first.
For as long as 50 years the building at Pushkin Square has enjoyed the status of the
MIFF Palace. Annually, it hosts the Film Festival opening and closing ceremonies. Russian
and world movie stars upon parading along the red carpet running through Pushkin Square
park walk up the stairs to enter the Pushkinsky.
Unfortunately the cinema hall has not been well maintained. The building has been
marred by multiple annexes and lean-tos, as well as low quality façade materials which do not
meet today’s standards.

A.7 Special Requirements

requirement is using at least one DuPont product.

E.2 Assessment criteria

- Originality and quality of an architectural project.
- Connection between the proposal and goals, and between general and special
terms and conditions of the Competition.
- Study of innovative composition solutions, and material combinations with due
consideration of the view of important buildings.
- Project feasibility.
- Clarity and quality of the project presentation (description).

F. NOTE
This Competition is an excellent opportunity for all architects, engineers and designers to
experiment, to try new ideas, to explore new areas of design, to propose one's own, individual
approach to considering the variants of reconstruction of a significant site in the Moscow cityscape,
namely the main cinema house of Russia, the "palace" of the Moscow International Film Festival,
and apply one's professional creative gift to refining the appearance of one of the most splendid
historic squares of the capital city.
Therefore, this Competition Notice sets the utmost openness and flexibility to the Competition in
order to lift any formalistic restrictions on the participating projects. The project authors are
permitted to interpret the base terms and conditions of the Competition individually, possibly going
beyond them, but, obviously, assuming the risk of having their projects assessed either as competent
and novel or as noncompliant and too pretentious. The contents and quality of each proposed project
will initially be assessed by the jury, and then reviewed by peers and a wider audience. The main
purpose of the Union of Architects of Russia was to make up the jury of the people who as panelists
could ensure impartiality of assessment while relying on their work and expertise.

The Union of Architects of Russia and DuPont greet all participants and wish them luck!
