This view is looking down on the catchment area of an irrigation dam in Kerala. This image was taken from the top of Nelliyampathy hill. At this altitude, the best tea in Southern India is grown. The communist government does an excellent job in encouraging agriculture in the state by supplying free electricity for irrigation and water at a minimal cost. The constant condensation at this altitude (1,800m amsl), adds special flavour to the tea by extending the maturing process. Cheap and obedient labour for harvesting comes from Tamil Nadu, a stone's throw away. The background to the right of the image is 1 kilometre lower. PHOTOGRAPHIC TECHNIQUE: By patiently waiting for the haze to partially obliterate the background, the tree stands out and a three-dimensional effect is achieved. A knowledge of meteorology was essential to be able to predict when the haze will form. The large volume of water in the irrigation dam below meant that haze formation was a certainty with evaporation.
