Part I: Microscope Exploration
Remember to always carry microscopes with two hands. Always know where your objective lenses
are positioned to avoid breaking a slide. Use a textbook for help.
Label the following microscope:

Part II: Leaf

Obtain a leaf from your teacher and sketch the features of the leaf – upper (dorsal) and lower
(ventral) surfaces. Use color.

Part III: Stomata
1. Obtain a small section of Ivy from your teacher. Place it on a microscope slide. A cover
slip/water may be used but it is not required providing the leaf doesn’t have a lot of curvature
to it.
2. Observe the leaf section under low and then high power.
3. Draw and color what you see.

Part IV: Chlorophyll


1. Obtain a small leaf of Elodea from your teacher.
2. Prepare a wet mount slide with the Elodea in the middle.
3. Observe the Elodea under low and then high power.
4. Draw and color what you see.

Use the Leaf Structure and Function passage to answer the following questions:

1. What is the outermost covering of a leaf? _____________________________

2. How did the outside of the leaf feel to the touch? _______________________

3. How can sunlight reach the inside of a leaf? ___________________________
