INTRODUCTION

My friend, John Phillips, said, "The Bible is full of people and places.
I t is a book of names. The first person to ever live on this earth was
named by God Himself." Genesis 5:2

One of the most fascinating studies in all the Bible is the study of
the o.T. and N.T. characters. These characters give to us some of
the richest biographical material found anywhere. Thomas Carlyle
said, "Great men", are the inspired text of the book of history."

Around these outstanding characters of the O.T. such as Adam, Eve,

Noah, Enoch, Abraham, Joseph, Moses, David and Isaiah are found
the truths and facts in the history of revelation and redemption.

I personally have, for many years, been interested in the study of

Bible characters and the meaning of their names (and all names of
the Bible for that matter).

McCartney said, "The greatest field of timely illustrations are found

i n o.T. characters." Whether it be the struggle of the two natures,
as in Jacob; or the paths of life's trials, as in Joseph; or the conflict
between the desires of the higher and lower nature, as in Balaam;
or the reaction of hate and revenge, as in Haman; or the tragedy of
the great gifts wasted, as in Samson and Saul; or the beauty and
glory of forgiveness, as in the case of David.

i n this study it would be impossible to exhaust all the golden

nuggets and jewels that could be mined from the lives of those
great men and women of the o.T.

I wish only to whet your appetite for further Bible study. As you
will see, I am going to mention just a few of these o.T. characters,
though the names of the o.T. characters that I wish to deal with
may not, in my opinion, be the greatest or the least mentioned. To
Illustrate, may I point out that the book of Genesis is taken up
entirely with four major characters:

1) Abraham - seeking and finding faith.

2) I saac - enduring and resting faith.
3) Jacob - serving and fruitbearing faith.

1
4) Joseph - suffering and triumphant faith.

I. SALVATION GROUP # ONE

1. NAME ... ADAM...

Hebrew word, Adam (Ad-dawm').
MEANING OF NAME...
man, a red man, ruddy, i.e., flush or turn rosy, to show
blood (in the face), a human being, an individual, a
multiplying low man (means of low degree), of the ground,
derived from a word meaning ground from whence he was
made ... etc.

NOTE: There is a special significance attached to the emphatic

N.T. statement that "Adam is the figure of Him that is to
come" (Rom. 5:14). This, because of the 560 times the
Hebrew word "adhawm" from which it is derived, occurs
i n the O.T.; the ONLY case outside of the first five
chapters of Genesis where it UNQUESTIONABLY is a proper
name is in I Chron. 1:1. In the other cases, it carries the
thought of "man" or "mankind." Hence, there have been
many who argued that the record of man's creation in
Gen. 1:26-27 referred, NOT to an INDIVIDUAL, but a
"species."
This is mentioned here because of a very obvious fact that the
Genesis account relates only to a creation of a human "species."
then, as obviously, ADAM (mankind) could NOT be a type of
Christ. The INDIVIDUALITY of Adam must be demonstrated if such
can be a TRUE type of our Lord. Aside from the very sound
arguments which may be deduced from the Genesis account
i tself, the Holy Spirit speaking through Paul declares ADAM to
have been a distinct INDIVIDUAL who in a sense elsewhere
ascertained, was "A FIGURE (type) of Him Who was to come"
(i.e., Christ).

PRINCIPLE BIBLE REFERENCES ... Genesis 1:26; 2:15; 5:5; Job

31:33; Romans 5:14; I Cor. 15:22, 45; I Tim. 2:13.

TYPOLOGY...
( 1) A type of Christ;
( 2) A type of the natural man.

I n studying Bible characters we know that they were not perfect

men so they could neither be a perfect type of Christ. They just

2
foresaw some truth about the Lord Jesus.

1. Type of Christ ... as head of a race ...I Cor. 15:21, 22, 45b, 47b,
establishing a close parallelism between Adam and Christ, the
l ast Adam, first earthly ... last heavenly. First came in life -giving
death, last came for death to impute life, was great in strength
but came in weakness - John 19. In his relationship to Eve - Eph.
5. Adam became a partaker of Eve's sin, same as Christ and
church. First Adam was sinless at start, fig. Of Him to come -
Romans 5:14.
A. Type of Christ in CHARACTER - Gen. 1:27, "So God created
man in His own IMAGE." See Col 1:15 with Heb. 1:3.
B. Type of Christ in His AUTHORITY - Gen. 1:28, "...HAVE
dominion..." See Psalm 8:6 with Heb. 2:5-8.
C. Type of Christ in RESPONSIBILITY - Gen. 1:28, "...MULTIPLY...
and REPLENISH the earth..." (i.e., become Head of a race
by NATURAL GENERATION). Gen. 5:1-2; See Heb. 2:9-17
(i.e., becoming Head of a new race by SUPERnatural
Regeneration). See, too, Eph. 1:22; 4:15; 5:23.
D. Type of Christ in his PROGENY - Gen. 5:3, "Adam ...begot a
son in HIS OWN likeness, after HIS image" (i.e., Adam thus
passing on to the race of NATURALLY - born men a SINFUL
and DEATHFUL life. (See Rom. 5:12) CP I Cor. 15:47-49,
".... we shall also bear the IMAGE of the heavenly" (i.e., Christ,
thus He passing on to the new race of SUPERnaturally
REborn men a SINLESS and DEATHLESS life).
See I John 5:10-14.
E. Type of Christ in OUTREACH - I Cor. 15:22, "...in Adam ALL
DIE ... in Christ shall ALL BE MADE TO LIVE" (Relating to a
universal resurrection, they that have done good (the saved)
unto the resurrection of LIFE, they that have done evil (the
unsaved) unto the resurrection of damnation." (John 5:29).
2. Type of the natural man ... in fallen state. Death to all members
of the first family because their father died. Cf...when Adam
died spiritually Gen. 2:17; 3:7; James 2:26. The entire
race ... man ... the fact that restoration needs to be made, Psalms
8:5-6; Heb. 2:7-8; Romans 5:12, 17-19; I Cor. 15:45a, 47a. There are
only two men in God's sight, the first Adam and the last Adam.
The N.T. regards Adam as father of the whole human race ... new
man makes sin his own. Adam's primitive condition (Gen. 2:8-25)
which would be shared by ail men based on Adam's work...
li kewise... all men would die. Gen. 2:17, 3:17.
THE PURPOSE...
to teach the necessity of complete obedience and
dependence upon one over you. Gen. 2:16-17...cf ... Romans

3
8:16-17. We should obey our maker ... and our lifegiver. Man
was both a made and created being. Gen. 2:7. Formed...
made from preexisting material, the dust. Breathed...
created... cf...Gen. 1:27 no previous existing material. Gen.
1:26-27 Image ... likeness in character. Character has no form.
The Spirit was the image of God. Our bodies are in the
li keness of earthly Adam, first birth ... our new creation,
second birth ... spirit, we are to be like Christ, the last Adam.
PICTURE OF SALVATION...
THE COMMAND...
Salvation based on complete obedience Gen. 2:16-17 Adam
was sinless at the first part of his life. Ga. 5:16. TheE
commandment was to be maintained cf...Romans 7:10 etc.
THE CRISIS...
Obedience must follow the command ...but-it is confronted
with temptation Genesis 3:1-6. Temptation calls for a
decision to be made. There are only two ways to go ... will
Adam justify self by making his own decision ... or-will he
submit to obedience of God's will. The same as us, our daily
decisions when made for self ...de-throne the glory of Christ.
THE RESULT...
the fall, death ; every decision brings results, Gen. 3:7. As one
of us ... Gen. 3:22 in the exercising of Adam's own will. This is
not what God had planned, God's Will was the only one to be
obeyed. He was driven away...two wills cannot be exercised
unless agreed - Amos 3:3. Here the eyes of both were
opened because the whole body had sinned, now another
crisis ... again self justification - Gen. 3:7. The whole world was
cursed from the sin of man - Gen. 3:17. The fall was the
ground of Christ's redemption.
CONVICTION...
Gen. 3:8,9,10,12 Self justification will last among men, just as
Adam and Eve had no trouble among themselves but it
didn't last. When God came in their presence, they had a
guilt complex.
THE CALL...
Gen. 3:9 first question in the Bible. God came seeking and
His method is still the same. The question demands an
answer.
THE ANSWER...
Gen. 3:10 confession, naked (but they were dressed) he was
acknowledging his shame. V-12 woman's fault (but he had to
still confess)... I did eat.

SALVATION TAUGHT BY SUBSTITUTIONARY ATONEMENT -

4
Gen. 3:21. Salvation provided for all those who take this
position, acknowledgement of their position and receiving
what they are unable to do. This shows that salvation is all of
God's grace. The law of substitution given to Adam was passed
on to his sons - Gen. 4:4-5.

Exhibition of Divine mercy, to come - Genesis 3:15. They were

saved but not removed from the curse caused by their sin.
When Adam and Eve saw they were naked, they realized
they needed clothing. Their ingenuity had met the
need ... their works (in their own eyes) made everything well.
Their desire to improve themselves was successful until God
came into their presence. Conviction never reaches the soul
until God speaks ... then they made three startling discoveries.

1. They discovered how inadequate their clothing was (their

works of righteousness) ...they were clothed ... but ...they were
still naked.
2. They discovered how inadequate their hiding place was
(hiding was an acknowledgement that something was
wrong) ...they could not evade God.
3. They discovered how inadequate their excuses were.
Though passing the buck, they were still guilty ... their
confession of ...I did eat.

II. SALVATION GROUP #TWO:

1. NAME...

A. EVE...
Hebrew word, Chavvah (khav-vaw') Gen. 3:20 named after the
fall, the second name given by Adam.
MEANING OF NAME ... EVE
Life giver or first woman, to declare or show, give (promise)
life, be whole, mother of all living.
B. WOMAN...
Hebrew word, Ishshah(Ish-shaw') Genesis 2:23 the first name
given by Adam.
MEANING OF NAME ... WOMEN
Maness, together, wife, female, multiplied many, a
designation reference to her relation to the man.
C. ADAM...
Hebrew word, Adam (aw-dawm') Genesis 5:2 - The name
given by God.
MEANING OF NAME ... ADAM

5
Here the emphasis is on the one Flesh

NOTE: Three names are recorded of her in the Genesis account.

She is called "eve" meaning: "the Mother of all living";
she is called "Woman" from the Hebrew "ishsha" meaning
literally 'man-ess', which is not strictly a name, but a
generic designation referring to her relation to the man.
A relation that is described as DERIVATIVE, as the HELPER,
rather than the INITIATOR, yet supplying perfectly the
man's social and affectional needs. The third name is
Adam - Gen. 5:2 - "and called their name Adam" (both).
Hence she becomes:
A. Type of the Church as to Her RELATIONSHIP... Gen.2:22..."and
brought her to the man ... the man and his WIFE"; See Rev.
19:7-8. Institution of marriage - Matt. 19:4-9 .
B. Type of the Church as to Her SOURCE ... Gen. 2:21, "And the
Lord God caused a DEEP SLEEP to fall upon Adam ... took
rib ... from rib made He the woman...; See Eph. 5:25.

NOTE: "Gave HIMSELF..."

C. Type of the Church as to Her IDENTIFICATION ... Gen. 2:23;

"Adam said, this is now bone of my bone and flesh of my
flesh"; See Eph. 5:30.
PRINCIPLE BIBLE REFERENCES ... Genesis 1:27; 2:18; 2:22-25; 3:1;
4:1; II Cor. 11:3; 1 Tim. 2:13-14.
TYPOLOGY...
A Type of the Church, a life giver

Eve taken out of Adam's side during the deep sleep is a picture of
the Church being taken out of Christ's side while He is tarrying.
"Side" - "Blood" - Lev. 17:11; Gen. 9:4; (Blood cells, Heb. 4:12) (rib-
"tsela" - John 19:34-36; I John 5:5-8) (witnesses of the death and
finished work of Christ ... the producing of a bride ... obedience kept
the whole body from falling ... Woman (the Church) formed from
man's (Christ's) body sets forth the dependence of the woman (the
church) upon the man (Christ) also gives the close relationship. As
Eve was a part of Adam ... so are we a part of Christ. CF ...Eph. 1:22-23;
2:15-16; 5:22-33 etc.

PURPOSE...
To teach obedience ... also shows we are to be in subjection
to the one placed over us. Most all trouble comes from
i gnoring this law.

6
Mentioned twice in the N.T....Paul reminds us that we, like Eve, are
i n danger of being led away from the simplicity of Christ's teaching
and in danger of being hurt by the "subtility of the serpent" which
brought disunity. (II Cor. 11:2-3).

Paul also expresses his position in regard to Eve to Timothy and

argues that man is superior in the work of the Lord (I Tim. 2:13-15).

THE ONENESS OF THE BODY...

Just as God created Adam (Gen. 1:27) in His image, (image of
the Spirit, the only thing man received from God). He
created woman, body, soul and spirit from man's
i mage ... because she was taken completely from man. The
oneness of man and woman in true marriage comes to us in
i ts full meaning in Gen. 2:24... COMPLETE ... God did not give
Adam dominion of the earth until Eve was with
him ... likewise ... Christ will not have dominion of the earth
until his bride (the Church) is with Him in the millennial age.

Woman was given to man for fellowship - Gen. 2:18 ... same as our
fellowship with Christ. Notice ... God brought the woman to man-
Genesis 2:22. The same as the Church will be brought to Christ.

THE COMMAND TO KEEP...

Though she didn't receive the command first, she was still
obligated. Gen. 2:9 shows she knew better. When Eve spoke
to the serpent - Gen. 3:3 "Tree in the midst"... she spoke as if
only one tree existed and clearly shows the one she had in
mind ... the prohibited one. The permitted one (tree of life)
was not even thought of until it was no longer accessible.
Gen. 3:22.
THE CRISIS...
TEMPTATION ... whose will ... will be exercised? Eve's temptation
was three-fold and addressed to the body, soul and spirit.
The same temptation order given Jesus and us now.

EVE - Gen. 3:6; CHRIST - Luke 4:3,7,10; US - I John 2:16.

Satan told Eve she would gain for herself new delight if she ate.
Trouble came from seizing that which did not belong to her. The
first and second acts shows woman's impulsiveness and man's
i nclination to follow her wherever she leads ... even to the depths of
sin, which was the disobeying of God.

7
THE CURSE ON WOMAN...
Gen. 3:16 - Bear children in travail and be subject to her
husband. She lost equal rights but will regain them in glory.
Now a veil is placed between man and God ... also between
man and woman, because a God ordained marriage is not
possible in their fallen state. CF ...Exodus 26:33 - The rending
of the veil at Christ's death opened the way to God and also
to be one in the Lord ... in marriage.

Satan in both cases (Eve and the Church) tried to spoil God's work.
The object was to make God's word and His goodness doubted.
Genesis 3:4.

THE PICTURE OF SALVATION

CONVICTION IN THE CALL...
Gen. 3:8 - they heard Gen. 3:13 - asking for an answer.
CONFESSION IN THE ANSWER...
Gen. 3:13 - Serpent's fault ... BUT I ate.
RECEIVING THE WORK OF ANOTHER...
Gen. 3:21 God Clothed. Application of redemption would be
i n a covering provided by the shedding of innocent blood.
HER TESTIMONY...
Gen. 4:1 - Her positive assertion of "I have gotten a man
from the Lord" makes certain that God now ruled over her
life.

III. RELIGIOUS MEN - GROUP #THREE

1. NAME ... CAIN...

Hebrew word, Qayin, (kah'yin).

A. He is a Type of Natural Man in his WORSHIP... Gen.4:13... See
Jude 4-8-10-11.
B. He is a Type of the Natural man in his ATTITUDE ... Gen. 4:5... Cf
John 8:41.
C. He is a Type of the Natural Man in his LACK OF REPENTANCE...
Gen. 4:13 ... CF Rev. 9:21 and 16:11.
D. He is a Type of the Natural Man in his FRUIT ... Gen. 4:16-24
( Note: vs. 18-19 with 23-24 as to ATTITUDE) and NOTE 20-22 as
to PRODUCT ...i.e., merely NATURAL fruit).
E. He is a Type of the Natural man as to his DESTINY... Gen. 4:11-
12...CF Jude 13. I John 3:12.

PURPOSE...
to teach death to the first born and new birth needed for
survival.

He was the first son of Adam, human race - Gen. 4:1 (Cf. Exodus 12;
first born Egypt). First farmer, Gen. 4 :2, what he offered, fruit of
the earth, what anyone could do, but there was no sacrifice by
substitution in it, it was casually offered. Note difference in
attitude, he had knowledge of a demanded sacrifice by substitution.
He was the first murderer - Gen. 4:8; first liar - 4:9; first fugitive 4:12
from the consequence of murder, the first born of sin. Became an
outcast, he had no claim, no liberty, no privilege. He fled east of
Eden to the land of Nod where the first city was built - Gen. 4:17,
named after his first son Enoch.

2. NAME ... ABEL...

Hebrew word, hebel (heh'bel)
MEANING OF NAME...
absolute derivation unknown
PRINCIPLE SCRIPTURE ... Gen. 4:2-25; Matt. 23:35; Luke 11:51;
He. 11:4; 12:24.
TYPOLOGY...
A type of the true believer. He offered an innocent lamb,
proving his faith by the blood of substitution. A symbol,
continuing the act that God did Himself, the shedding of
i nnocent blood.

Abel is a Type of the SPIRITUAL man ... Gen. 4:4 with Heb. 11:4 ...Cf I
Cor. 2:15.

A. He is a type of the Spiritual man in his DISCERNMENT ... Gen.

4:4a (Cf Gen. 3:21) ... See He. 9:22.
B. He is a Type of the Spiritual man in his WORSHIP ... Gen. 4:4 ... CF

9
James 4:8 with He. 7:19 and Eph. 2:13.
C. He is a Type of the Spiritual man in his ACCEPTANCE WITH
GOD... Gen. 4:4b and 7a...Cf I Thess. 1:9-10.
D. He is a Type of the Spiritual man as to his DESTINY ... He. 11:3...
"He was RIGHTEOUS..." With John 5:28-29a with Rev. 19:7-8...CF
John 17:11 with Phil 1:6 and Phil 3:20-21 and Col. 3:4, etc.

PURPOSE...
to show the constant struggle between two opinions in the
world; and, to stand for the truth you are killed by the
world (old nature).

He was the second son of Adam, he was killed, he died without a

cause. He was a herdsman whose sacrifice was accepted. He
sacrificed the firstlings of the flock. Firstlings were costly ...cf...the
sacrifice of first fruits, the fruit from the first nature ... the
manifested deeds.

3. NAME ...MELCHIZEDEK...

As in the case of Adam, there is special significance in the fact that

Melchizedek is named in the n.T. as an historical personage as well
as one with a historical mission. In Heb. 7:1-3 is written, "This
Melchizedek...was made LIKE UNTO (a type of) the Son of God." This
refutes the error extent in some circles, that Melchizedek was an
Unhistorical character, being but an invention of Judaism. His
record is written because:

A. He is a Type of Christ in His PRIESTHOOD ... Gen. 14:18-20.

See Heb. 7:1-7.

Because of the record of Hebrews 7:3, it has been charged by some

that Melchizedek was an invention of Judaism, and not a true
historical character; BUT ... to deny this, that is, that he WAS an
HISTORICAL character, is to question and deny the record of the
Word of God and to fail to grasp the true meaning of the "Hebrew"
record. For, in asserting that Melchizedek was "Without Father,
without Mother, without genealogy, having neither beginning of
days nor end of life..." is not to infer that he had NO Father or
Mother, nor that he had no Birth nor Death, but simply that there
was no RECORD of these things, In ORDER that he might be a TRUE
TYPE of the Christ whose ETERNAL PRIESTHOOD (in contrast to the
CHANGING Aaronic priesthood, Heb. 7:23) might by him be typified.

B. He is a Type of Christ in his CHARACTER ... Gen. 14:18 with

10
He. 7:2. See Isaiah 9:6 and Jeremiah 23:5-6.
C. He is a Type of Christ in his ASCENDANCY ... He. 7:6-7 ... See
Rev. 19:16.
