CHAPTER : 7 Ionic Equilibrium SUB TOPIC : 7.1 Acids and bases

OBJECTIVES:
At the end of this lesson, students should be able to:
(a) Relate pH and pOH to the ionic product of water, Kw at 250C.
(b) Calculate the pH values of a strong acid and base.*
(c) Relate the strength of a weak acid and a weak base to the respective dissociation
constants α, Ka and Kb**.
d) Perform calculations involving pH, dissociation constant, initial concentration,
equilibrium concentration and the degree of dissociation, α

* Exclude calculations for very dilute acids or bases (< 10−7 M)

** Relate Ka, Kb, Kw, pKa, pKb, pKw, pH and pOH.

REFLECTION :
Syukur Alhamdulillah the lecture goes on well. I give several examples to students as their
practice in calculate pH and pOH. Beside that to emphasized the concept they have study
before this. The concept ionic product of water, Kw at 250C is new for the students so I
hope students make revision for each new concept they have learnt in lecture.

NOTES :
Tomorrow will continue with explain salt hydrolysis and write hydrolysis equation for the salt
formed from the reaction between strong acid and strong base, strong acid and weak base and
weak acid and strong base. Stay tuned. Insya 4W1.
