a) Calculate the amount of heat that must be absorbed by 0.8 kg of ice at -20ºC in order
to convert it to water at 20ºC. Use the following data:
Specific heat capacity of water = 4190 Jkg −1K −1 ,

Specific heat capacity of ice = 2220 Jkg −1K −1 ,

Heat of fusion of water = 3.34 ×10 5 J kg −1

b) At 0ºC, an aluminium rod has a length L A , and the copper rod has length L C .
When the rods are heated, the difference between their lengths stays constant at 1.00

(
cm. Find the values of L A and LC . α copper = 17 × 10 K α
−6 −1
, aluminium = 24× 10− 6 K− 1 )
