A  STATEMENT  OF  MOTIVATION  

My  name  is  xxxxxxx.  I  graduated  and  obtained  a  Bachelor  degree  from  Biology 
Department of xxxxxx University. I would like to continue my study to a higher level, Master’s 
degree in Aquaculture and Fisheries, xxxxxxxxxx University. 
  Currently, I am a researcher staff of Marine Biology Department, at xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx. 
My institution is a research unit which is located in xxxxxxx Islands, Indonesia. I work for this 
field  because  of  my  dream  and  passion  in  research  activities.  Being  a  researcher  of  Natural 
sciences was my childhood’s dream, and marine in particular has interested me for some time 
since I realized that our life heavily depends on marine resources. Marine life is our important 
resources for food, medicines, and raw materials. We must learn how marine and its life can be 
utilized  wisely.  Researchers  play  an  important  role  in  that  circumstance.  Therefore  I  was 
convinced to be a marine scientist or researcher due to the great impact to our life. 
  My  job  as  a  researcher  is  to  reveal  marine  biodiversity  and  fisheries  potency  in  the 
xxxxxxx area. I hold responsibility of the species data and its ecological aspect for considering 
fisheries  potency  and  also  its  conservation  efforts.  This  job  needs  advanced  knowledge  of 
marine biology and high research skill, especially in marine ecology and fisheries. My previous 
academic  background  is  not  enough  for  me  to  be  a  professional  researcher.  For  that  reason,  I 
have  to  continue  my  study  to  enrich  my  knowledge  and  research  skill  in  Master’s  degree 
program in Aquaculture and Fisheries, xxxxxxxxxx University. 
  The master program that I desire to join will be very meaningful for me and my country. 
As we have known, marine sector in Indonesia is still under developed, despite of its rich marine 
and fisheries resources. On the contrary, these natural resources are facing a serious extinction 
threat,  due  to  complex  problems  caused  by  anthropogenic  disturbances  and  global  climatic 
change.  We  need  coordinated  research  and  management  to  conserve  our  resources.  It  is  an 
opportunity for me to give a great contribution to solve the problems. 
  I have to upgrade my academic background to the higher level in xxxxxxxxxx University. 
I choose the Master’s degree in Aquaculture and Fisheries because I realized this was a program 
that would lead me towards my career objective. I believe that it is the main gateway to realize 
my dream, be a marine scientist. I hope by joining the program  I will learn more fundamental 
knowledge and valuable skill in marine fisheries research. It becomes important for me to solve 
some  questions  related  to  my  job  in  Indonesia,  particularly  in  xxxxxxxxx,  such  as  how  does 
fishing  affect  coral  reef  communities?  What  factors  do  determine  on  population  dynamics  of 
marine organisms? What should be done to conserve fisheries resources? 
  Living and studying abroad are very fascinating for me. In my  opinion, it is like seeing 
the world with a new pair of glasses. At the first time, everything looks uncomfortable. However, 
if we keep our eyes open, everything becomes clear and better than ever. I would like to get new 
experiences, cultures, friends and networks which will determine my future. I believe that I will 
get all of those by studying in The Netherlands. 
  For  the  next  ten  years,  I  have  goals  to  be  achieved.  After  finishing  my  Master  study,  I 
intend to pursue a doctoral degree in the same field. I would like to move the next step, conduct 
a postdoctoral study. I have to always learn valuable skills that one day make me realizing my 
dream.  I  believe  I  can  provide  the  greatest  contribution  for  my  institution,  my  country,  and
