LOAD AND RESISTANCE FACTOR DESIGN OF

STRUCTURES
Course Faculty: DR MOHAMMAD SHAHIR LIEW and DR NARAYANAN SAMBU POTTY

Design codes have transitioned from the Working Stress Design to the Load and Resistance Factor Design
(LRFD) Design Specifications. You, as a structural or geotechnical engineer, may be wondering how this
transition will affect your design practice. This course will review the methodology, concepts and engineering
basis for the new specifications and how they will be implemented. You will learn about state of the art
technology for structural design.

Course Topics

• Introduction / Comparison of WSD and LRFD

• Methodology of the LRFD specifications
• How to determine material properties
• How to specify the loads
• Calibration of load and Resistance factors
• Example for determination of material properties
• Example for determination of design loads/ load characteristics
• Design example and evaluation of reliability of design

The course includes instructions, course notebook, morning and afternoon refreshments as well as a
certificate of completion.
