Two thousand years ago, the ancestors of the Maori people, from Polynesia, arrived in New Zealand (which means "land of the Long White Cloud") in huge canoes and initially only occupied the North Island. Much later, Abel Tasman was the first European explorer to sight the islands, but who really started the colonization was the English Captain James Cook in 1769.

History

After years of war with the Maori, the British Crown in 1840 signed the Treaty of Waitangi, which officially makes New Zealand a British colony, confiscating their best to Maori land. Only in 1955 they can regain some recognition for the injustices of the past.

Participating in the Second World War, New Zealand has found a new ally in the U.S.A. The decade from 1960 to 1970 was characterized by a time of growth that preceded the consolidation and autonomy of New Zealand. Although still a member of the British Commonwealth, today even the most conservative politicians talk openly of the possibility of New Zealand becoming a republic.

Economy

Historically, New Zealand's economy has developed from the agricultural sector. Their primary producers are among the best in the world. Companies like "Fonterra, the largest dairy exporter in the world.

New Zealand is a modern industrialized country. The main export industries are agriculture, horticulture, fisheries and forestry. This country also has substantial manufacturing, tourism and services. Moreover, the country's major producer of kiwi and grape. It also produces a large amount of wool, being among the top 10 global producers. The country also produces one of the best wines in the world.

Much of New Zealand culture is derived from European roots, mainly British, and more recently American, being Mori culture a part of great significance in New Zealand public life. We must not forget the influence of its larger neighbour, Australia.
