I.

COURSES REQUIREMENTS/DESCRIPTION

Practicum training for Information Technology students is offered during summer of third year. The courses taken prior to the practicum training enable the students to familiarize with the work situations they will be exposed to in their training and them with knowledge, skills and attitudes they can apply during the training proper. 1. Pres-requisites Practicum training is open to all third year standing students who have completed all their academic courses and non-academic requirements. Students who have finished their school requirements are more preferred by IT establishments since they view practicum students as a pool of talents from whom they can immediately hire future employees. Students who have still academic loads and/or back subjects will not be considered for the practicum training. 2. Practicum Courses The required practicum course(s) to be enrolled are as follows: OTJT Supervised Work Experience in the IT Industry It is a three-unit course, which is equivalent to 200 training hours.

II. OBJECTIVES OF PRACTICUM

The practicum training has the following objectives: General: To acquire the necessary competencies on the operational aspects of the different aspects of Information Technology establishments which will prepare the students to become globally competitive in their chosen careers. Specific: At the end of the practicum training program, the students should be able: 1. to determine areas of specialization in the Information Technology phase future employment considerations. 2. to enhance the technical know-how on the operational aspects information Technology. 3. to develop their analytical skills in evaluating operational procedures in terms of determining the strengths and weaknesses of each department, and in recommending necessary solutions for improvement; and 4. to appreciate the importance of human skill combined with technology and enjoy while working in the IT establishments in terms of inter-personal relationship, teamwork, etc.

III. TRAINING ACTIVITIES

Listed below are some of the possible activities which may be undertaken by the students enrolled in the practicum courses.

IV. PRACTICUM DOCUMENTS

Students are required to submit the following requirements before they can begin the Practicum or On - the Job Training. 1. Practicum Application Form (Appendix A). This is the standard form accomplished by the practicum applicant and requires the following information: a. Personal Data b. Special Skills c. Three suggested linkage establishments 2. Resume (Appendix B). A resume is a written presentation of qualifications and accomplishments of the students. It must be accurate, brief and clear. All information given should be well-organized and in computerized. 3. Identification Pictures. It is recommended that the practicum student invest in a professionally taken identification picture with the background, preferably colored picture in business attire, 2x2 inches. 4. Curriculum Checklist. A copy of the curriculum checklist is required which indicates the grades received for all the completed subjects. This checklist must be evaluated and signed by the University Registrar or designated personnel. 5. Certification of Class Standing (Appendix C). This attests to the passing/failing status of the students for courses currently enrolled. This certification must be secured from the instructor of each course. Students must have a passing status in all subjects currently enrolled in to qualify for practicum placement.

V. COURSE REQUIREMENTS

The following are the requirements of the course which have to be met by the students enrolled in the practicum training. 1. Pre-Practicum Orientation Pre-practicum orientation will prepare the students for their forthcoming training. It will be sponsored by the department and will be held on the third quarter of the academic year. Topics to be discussed during the orientation may range from: Personality Development, Dressing up for Success, Career Paths in IT Industry, and a sharing of experience by recent practicum students. Resource speakers will be invited by the practicum coordinator. The practicum coordinator will also have sessions with the trainees on the following topics: Preparation of the Power Resume, How to Prepare Oneself for an Interview and the Practicum Manual.

2. In-school Interview This is a one-on-one talk between the practicum coordinator and the student to prepare him/her for future interviews in the linkage establishment. The practicum coordinator will discuss the students strong and weak points. Practicum coordinator will evaluate the student based on appearance, punctuality, communication skills and logical presentation of ideas using the In-school Interview Form (Appendix D) Students have presented his/her comprehensive resume before the start of the in-school interview.

3. Performance Evaluation Form This report will be used to monitor students performance during the practicum. It is highly confidential report, which must be accomplished accurately to help the practicum coordinator / adviser evaluate properly the performance of the students. The practicum coordinator of the linkage establishment may send his/her duly accomplished evaluation forms in a sealed envelope to the practicum adviser of the school. Students must furnish evaluators with Performance Evaluation Report Forms. (Appendix E). Note: The Practicum Forms that will be used are included in this Manual 4. Certificate of Completion A certification from the linkage establishment regarding the number of work hours, as well as the inclusive dates of the training completed by the students, signed by the practicum coordinator of the linkage establishment will be evaluated. The certification will then be submitted to the practicum coordinator / adviser, together with the practicum report. 5. Narrative Report To measure the necessary competencies of the students during the practicum training, a narrative report must be prepared and submitted to the practicum coordinator / adviser.

5.1. Grading The narrative report will be graded on the following criteria as shown in table 5.

5.2. Narrative Report Format The parts of the practicum narrative report are listed below, in order in which they are to appear in the completed report. A. Preliminary Pages

The preliminaries of narrative report include the Title Page, Approval Sheet, Acknowledgement Page, Table of Contents and List of Tables and Figures. 1. Title Page. A sample Title page is found in Appendix H. The student gives his or her full legal name as indicated in the records of Cavite State University. 2. Approval Sheet. The approval sheet is included in the final bound report. This page of the report is signed by the Practicum Adviser/s, Practicum Coordinator, Department Chair and the Dean of the Campus. A sample form of the approval sheet is found in Appendix I. 3. Biographical Data. The biographical data sheet is limited to one page only. A sample is found in Appendix J. 4. Acknowledgement. This part expresses the authors gratitude / appreciation to persons/ agencies that helped and contributed much in the completion of the training and in preparation of the report. It is recommended that only the names of those who directly assisted the students in the completion of the report be included. 5. Table of Contents. The Table of Contents lists the chapter titles and headings whether major or minor stated in exactly the words, which appears in the body of the report. All chapter headings must be capitalized. For sub-headings, only the first letter of major words must be capitalized. A list of all exhibits (forms, journals, manuals) with appropriate numbering is included. A sample is found in Appendix K. 6. List of Tables. A list of Tables on a separate page following the Table of Contents lists numerically the number, exact full title and page of every table found in the text and in the appendices. A sample is found in Appendix L. 7. List of Figures. If there are figures, charts and illustrations, a separate list for each follows the list of figures and gives the same information for each as the List of Tables, A sample is found in Appendix M.

B. Organization of the Report I. INTRODUCTION The introduction of the narrative report is subdivided into two parts, namely: Rationale about the Practicum Training and the Linkage Establishment. Rationale about the Practicum Training describes the importance of the training, hours required for the training among others. On the other hand, the Linkage Establishment discusses its general information. The students may wish to include the following information about the cooperating agency. Name and General Location describes the complete name, address, location map, historical background. Institutions Objective / Philosophy states the general philosophy of the agency. Organizational Chart presents the organizational set-up, identifies people holding position. Facilities, number of Departments, etc. Outstanding characteristics of the establishment II. INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY PHASE All discussion on organizational structure, standard operating procedures, facilities and equipments, manpower, work atmosphere, use of material resources, strengths and weaknesses must be concise and stated clearly. Students are advised to seek the assistance of an authorized English Critic. (identified by the practicum coordinator / adviser) for technical writing. DEPARTMENT:______________________

Discuss major functions of the departments in a brief paragraphs. Avoid copying the agencys operational manual. 2.1. Standard Operating Procedures. Discuss the operational system in which the function of the section is performed and present forms commonly used as a way of communication. 2.2. Facilities and Equipment. Describe the facilities used in the section and how do these facilities performance of function. Evaluate the equipment and facilities in terms of state, unique characteristics and design (include photos. Layout as much as possible). 2.3. Manpower. Presents scheduling of personnel, work method, styles of communication and describe the procedures/steps undertaken in performing the duties. 2.4. Work Atmosphere. Discuss the working conditions in the department as well as the interpersonal relationship among employees. 2.5. Use of Material Resources. Discuss this in terms of availability of the forms used in the department which will facilitate fast and efficient service. 2.6. Strengths. Describe the strong points being practiced in the different departments. 2.7. Weaknesses / Improvement Areas. Determine the weak points being experienced in the different departments. 2.8. Recommendations. Give the suggestions to improve the operation of the different departments.

III. PRACTICUM EXPERIENCE This part discusses the actual / direct experience gained by the trainee. It includes any personal and professional growth or the additional

development of skills / competencies that the students strengths and weaknesses and suggestions for self-improvement, and any emerging career interests as a result of the experience. The discussion must be specific, concrete, and critical. IV. SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION This part states the summary of the paper, conclusion drawn from the assessment of the objectives of the practicum and the recommendations relative to the improvement of any area of the practicum training. LITERATURE CITED. This page lists down in alphabetical order the reference books, manuals or textbooks used to explain/discuss in the report.
