Autumn

As Big Bears summer colors transform into russet hues, the air sharpens to crisp nights and golden days. Amidst the vibrant evergreen trees are oaks, cottonwoods and aspens splashed in brilliant amber, yellow and pumpkin-colored leaves. Bring your camera to capture autumns blazing beauty. The lake continues as the main attraction with shing and boating activities. Rent a pontoon or let a shing guide handle the messy work while you focus on reeling in plump trout and bass. Harvest time in Big Bear means picking from a bounty of fall festivities. The annual Oktoberfest kicks up a lively mood with brew, brats, competitions and dancing fun for the entire family. At the Moonridge Animal Park, Big Bears own alpine zoo takes visitors on exclusive Flashlight Safari tours of the animals world in the dark.

The ABCs of Snow Play with Kids

For kids, a visit to the snow is like stepping into the pages of a storybook. Its a fairytale come true. And with Big Bears close proximity to nearby cities, theres no reason not to declare a snow day and come up to play. Here are a few ideas to get you and your kids going. But follow your childs lead for creative snow play.

SNOW FUN FOR KIDS

Kids love being the rst for just about anything! Let your kids be the rst to make prints in freshly fallen snow. Make a snowman by scooping up the snow and shaping it into your childrens own creation fun for little hands and big hands alike. Explore the magical winter forest with a Big Bear Discovery Center naturalist to learn fascinating forest facts. Snow-laden branches sprinkle urries. Or is that fairy dust? Its tube time! Not the boob tube, but inner tubing and sledding down snowy hills. Big Bear has two designated snow play areas. Build a fort; then start a playful snowball ght. Take cover in the fort! Dig the snow. Hand your kids buckets and shovels and let them build whatever their imagination desires. Learn to ski or ride. But leave the lessons to the pros at Big Bear Mountain Resorts. Instructors make learning fun for ages 4 and older. If your kids already ski, play Follow the Leader down the slopes. Stash healthy snacks in your pocket for quick energy lifts. And remember to always carry water. High altitude equals big thirst.

hats better than lounging on your cabins deck, soaking up rays, feeding your nose with pine-scented aromas, and listening to the natural music of chirping birds? Not much. Whats better than being in your slippers and bathrobe, with a cup of hot java, curled up next to a crackling re, reading the latest best-seller? Not much. Whats better than sitting in a steamy outdoor Jacuzzi cascading with bubbles, a glass of pinot noir in your hand and snowakes gently falling on your head? Not much. When it comes to rest and relaxation in Big Bear Lake, theres really not much to it. In todays hectic world the best thing you can do is take a time out and just chill. The mountains are 180 degrees opposite to the city. This is a world of serenity, solitude and tranquility. Maybe you want to dip your toes in the lake, feed the ducks and watch the sailboats drift by. Maybe you want to take a boat onto the lake and go with the ow. Maybe an afternoon nap on the porch looking at the trees and clear skies is what you need. Make it simple and let the warmth of the sun and coolness of the freshwater lake blend together to soothe your mind and soul.

Four Seasons to Unwind

It doesnt matter what time of year you visit Big Bear Lake because nature is always here to comfort you. In the spring brightly colored owers blossom, the lake sparkles like an engagement ring, birds whistle beautiful songs, and sunsets glow. Summertime is like a Zen master that will teach you how to appreciate the ner things in life. Come autumn, youll nd bliss being surrounded by uttering golden and auburn leaves. Daytime temps are mild to moderately perfect for an afternoon walk in the woods, and at night theres nothing like snuggling under a down comforter with your favorite warm beverage. In winter its a given that wood-burning replaces are the heart of cabins and lodges. Just peek outside, and youll see smoky chimneys up and down the street.

GOT ITS NAME.

How Big Bear Lake

f someone told you they had just spent a fun-lled weekend at a popular Southern California resort called Yuhaviat, you probably wouldnt know what they were talking about. Yuhaviat is a Serrano Indian word that means Pine Place, Big Bear Valleys name for more than a thousand years. In 1845, Benjamin Davis Wilson rode into Yuhaviat Valley with a posse of 20 men. They were chasing Indians who had been raiding their ranches in Riverside. As they entered the valley, they found it swarming with grizzlies. Thats not a misprint, indeed they were grizzly bears! Wilson divided his men into two-man teams. Each team went out, roped a bear and brought it back to camp. They had eleven bears at the camp at the same time. This prompted Wilson to come up with the name Big Bear Lake. However, it should be noted that Big Bear Lake is a man-made lake that didnt exist in 1845. The lake Wilson named Big Bear was actually the natural lake at the east end of the valley, now known as Baldwin Lake.

Quite a Rich History

Big Bear Lake was once a gold mining mecca before it became a popular four-season resort. In 1860, a bear hunter named William Holcomb discovered gold in the backcountry after tracking a bears blood trail to a creek lled with akes of gold. He tried to keep it a secret, but soon, word spread, and Southern Californias largest gold rush was on! From 1860 to about 1875 the area was swarming with prospectors. Today, only a few relics and structures from the Gold Rush days remain. Big Bear O -Road Adventures o ers gold mining tours all year round. Big Bear Discovery Center o ers tours in the summer and provides a self guided brochure for folks who want to venture out on their own. Visitors will see actual remnants of the gold mines and learn about several sites of interest, such as Metzger Mine, Lucky Baldwin Mine, Two Gun Bills Saloon, Hangmans Tree and Wilburs Grave.

More Historic Facts

Big Bears rst dam, completed in 1884, was soon followed by the Valleys rst hotel in 1888. In 1949 the rst ski resort opened, and Big Bear Lake soon became Southern Californias favorite mountain getaway.
