he combination of a cool alpine lake, surrounding lush forests and approximately 320 days of sunshine per year is a magnetic force that lures you to Big Bear spring, summer and fall. Once Old Man Winter packs it in, the sun warms up the mountains, days become longer and outdoor recreation blossoms! A walk or bike ride through the forest brings you face to face with colorful wildowers and the intoxicating scent of natures woodsy fragrance. If you have children, introduce them to a real 3-D adventure they can grasp. The fresh mountain air will stimulate your kids senses as they scout out animal tracks along the trails. Imaginations run wild as shrubs and tree logs become forts, and rocks become gems worthy of stu ng in pockets.
The grand centerpiece of our mountain resort is of course the lake. Above the lake are skies that absolutely pop with the prettiest blues youll ever see! Whether you choose to play on the lake or just view it from atop an overlooking vista its magnicence will automatically draw you in.
The lake is stu ed to the gills with trout, bass and catsh. Its easy to get hooked on the great shing dawn to dusk. If adventure on the water is what you seek then youre in for a treat. Just about every mainstream aquatic sport happens here from motorized boats to people powered kayaks and canoes. There are even some activities on the cutting edge like New Zealand style jet boat rides and the Cable Wakeboard Park. Along the 22-miles of shoreline, several marinas provide all the gear you need to navigate your way on water. Theres plenty of action in town too. Stop by for weekly and seasonal events and festivals like the Cowboy Gathering, Antique Auto Show, Big Bear Renaissance Faire and Art on the Lake. With so much to see and do, there are numerous reasons to visit each and every season. Consider it an open invitation to have your fun in the sun. Fishing

Some of the nest freshwater shing in California can be found in Big Bear Lake. There is an abundance of trout, bass, catsh and blue gill to be caught. Big Bear Lake is also well known as a good trolling lake. You will need to have a shing license, which can be purchased at sporting goods stores and marinas. You can rent a variety of boats, from pontoon, shing, sail and speed boats to canoes, kayaks and paddle boats or take a lake tour and enjoy a day in the sun at any one of the many marinas that surround Big Bear Lakes 22 miles of shoreline. Permits are required for private boats and can be purchased at any marina. A number of picnic areas surround the lake. Bring your favorite sandwich and enjoy the day. Public launch ramp Water-skiing, windsurng, wakeboarding, parasailing and jet skiing can all be enjoyed on Big Bear Lake. Arrangements can be made at many of the marinas. The U.S. Forest Service offers tent camping in their National Forest campgrounds. RV camping is also available in the valley. Call 800-424-4232 for more information on RV parks. S.S. hats better than lounging on your cabins deck, soaking up rays, feeding your nose with pine-scented aromas, and listening to the natural music of chirping birds? Not much. Whats better than being in your slippers and bathrobe, with a cup of hot java, curled up next to a crackling re, reading the latest best-seller? Not much. Whats better than sitting in a steamy outdoor Jacuzzi cascading with bubbles, a glass of pinot noir in your hand and snowakes gently falling on your head? Not much. When it comes to rest and relaxation in Big Bear Lake, theres really not much to it. In todays hectic world the best thing you can do is take a time out and just chill. The mountains are 180 degrees opposite to the city. This is a world of serenity, solitude and tranquility. Maybe you want to dip your toes in the lake, feed the ducks and watch the sailboats drift by. Maybe you want to take a boat onto the lake and go with the ow. Maybe an afternoon nap on the porch looking at the trees and clear skies is what you need. Make it simple and let the warmth of the sun and coolness of the freshwater lake blend together to soothe your mind and soul.

f someone told you they had just spent a fun-lled weekend at a popular Southern California resort called Yuhaviat, you probably wouldnt know what they were talking about. Yuhaviat is a Serrano Indian word that means Pine Place, Big Bear Valleys name for more than a thousand years. In 1845, Benjamin Davis Wilson rode into Yuhaviat Valley with a posse of 20 men. They were chasing Indians who had been raiding their ranches in Riverside. As they entered the valley, they found it swarming with grizzlies. Thats not a misprint, indeed they were grizzly bears! Wilson divided his men into two-man teams. Each team went out, roped a bear and brought it back to camp. They had eleven bears at the camp at the same time. This prompted Wilson to come up with the name Big Bear Lake. However, it should be noted that Big Bear Lake is a man-made lake that didnt exist in 1845. The lake Wilson named Big Bear was actually the natural lake at the east end of the valley, now known as Baldwin Lake.
