Application of increasing friction 1. Frictional force can be increased by increasing the roughness of the contact surfaces 2.

Greater frictional force are needed fpr a) Slow down moving objects faster b) Hold things firmer c) Grip surfaces better 3. The application of increasing friction: (a) Rubber pads or knobs are fixed to the bases of many household appliances like telephone, television, electric kettle and rice cooker to prevent them from slipping when in use. (b) Tyres and shoes with deep treads or grooves can give a good frip on slippery surfaces (c) Brake pads are used on wheels to slow down or stop vehicles.

Application of decreasing friction 1. 2. Frictional force can be reduced by smoothing the surfaces of contact Less friction needed for (a) Move things easily (b) Reduce heat produced (c) Slide things over each other easily The application of decreasing friction ; (a) Use round and smooth spherical objects like rollers or ball bearings to reduce friction. They are placed around axles in many machines to allow the axles to turn easily

3.

(b) A steamlined shape reduce friction, allowing objects to move easily through liquids and gases.

(c) A layer of air between two surfaces of contact reduces friction. The layer of air between the hull of a hydrofoil and water allows the hydrofoil to move at high speed.

(d) A conveyor belt moves on wheels or rollers to reduce friction. It is used in airports to transport luggage and in factories to move goods and heavy objects. (e) Use lubricants such as oil or grease can reduce friction when put between surfaces of contact.
