Tending the Garden of Your Soul Community Art Project

11:00 AM July 24 & 31 Led by Amanda Hunter What does tending the garden of your soul LOOK like? What are symbols, images, words that you would use to tell people about it? Join in this fun project to paint a community worship table cloth that illuminates our summer theme. At the end of the project the cloth will be divided between our Sanctuary, Sacred Journey and Many Voices services. Stop by tables in the East Entrance, add your art to the mix!

Tending the Garden of Your Soul

BIBLE STUDY: THE GOSPEL OF JOHN

SUNDAYS THROUGH AUGUST 21 11:00 AM LED BY BRUCE ROBBINS For some, Johns gospel is a weighty theological tome; for others it is the essence of Christianity, full of signs and glories. Each weeks study will be independent of others. People are welcome to come and go as they please. Bring a Bible!

Join Pastor Bruce Robbins and others from Hennepins local outreach team, Monday, July 25, as they spend a Day in the Life of someone experiencing homelessness in Minneapolis. This a great opportunity to learn (as a church community) about how p e o p l e s l i v e s a r e i m p a c t e d b y homelessness. For more information please contact Kristyn Ebert: Kristyn@haumc.org or 612-435-1305, or visit the table in Carlson Hall to learn more about the day.

When we come to know that, day by day, we live in the household of God, the world becomes less scary and more caring. In todays parables, Jesus teaches us about living in Gods house. Can you believe that God raised Jesus from the dead so that faith can blossom in you as extravagantly as in the mustard seed? Have you had glimpses of what this precious life can mean to you? The gloryif that word makes sense todayis above and below you, inside and outside you, and even next door. What do you say about that? As poet e.e. cummings says: Theres a hell of a good universe next door. Lets go!

ENTRY INTO CELEBRATION

tArvida Steen

In order to build the Kin-dom of God, we come to offer our own God-given gifts. In order to plant seeds that will be fruitful and multiply, we come caring for one another, giving and receiving in turn. In order to wait patiently as God uses what we have to offer and multiplies it exponentially, we come together to listen intently to where God is leading us. In order to remember what a treasure this life is, we take time to look for Christ in each other and in this world.

NANNIVERSARY SONG

Seed-planting, bread-baking, pearl-hunting God, You shape us into living parables. Help us to view our lives as gifts from you: treasures in which we now can take joy. May we be creative and abundant stewards of your earth and of your people, living our lives as an offering to you. Amen.
Todays anthem is arranged from Hymn No. 592. Additional text by Dr. Thomas Wright.

Together with you in the body of Christ, we covenant with you to share our prayers, presence, gifts, service, and witness, that in all things God may be glorified. PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION HYMN NO. 473 WITNESS SCRIPTURE READING Lead Me, Lord t Paula Colton Joseph Uemura, lector
We are now in the Season after Pentecost, what we often refer to as Ordinary Time and so we enter into our theme: Tending the Garden of Your Soul, recognizing that most of our tending needs to be during those ordinary times. We live most of our lives in ordinary time, dont we? And yet the miracle of our lives is anything but ordinary. It is in our every day living that we practice loving our neighbors, ourselves, and our God. How do you tend to your soul? How is your garden growing?

+ MATTHEW 13: 31-33, 44-46, 51-52

Jesus put before them a parable: The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed that someone took and sowed in the eld; it is the smallest of all the seeds, but when it has grown it is the greatest of shrubs and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and make nests in its branches. He told them another parable: The kingdom of heaven is like yeast that a woman took and mixed in with three measures of our until all of it was leavened. The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a eld, which someone found and hid; then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that eld. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of ne pearls; on nding one pearl of great value, he went and sold all that he had and bought it. Have you understood all this? They answered, Yes. And he said to them, Therefore every scribe who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven is like the master of a household who brings out of his treasure what is new and what is old.

HENNEPINCHURCH.ORG
We celebrate that the tradition of the church has deep roots in the life of the Festival (9:30 am) worship service when we celebrate Communion. In the past an usher has released the congregation to proceed to the table. Starting in August we will invite people to come to the table to receive communion whenever they are ready. There will be no usher to release or direct you. The main reason we are making this change is for the sake of being welcoming. While we, in the United Methodist Church, practice that all people are welcome to receive the sacrament if they wish to experience the grace of God, many other churches do not. By welcoming all people to come as they desire rather than being ofcially released, our practice of coming to the table will reect our theology of welcoming. It may take a few months for us to get used to this way of doing things, but we know that you will be hospitable to one another during this time of transition, helping one another out and carrying on the tradition of being an extremely welcoming and gracious community of faith.
