scipeople.ru/publication/70376/; : We consider what is said above as
elements of theory of biocontrol of water quality or, in other words, the theory of biomachinery of
water self-purification. If we consider the pathways of molecules of pollutants and of their
transformations and migrations within aquatic ecosystems and organisms, we may see analogy with
pathways of metabolism of molecules inside cells. What is common is the complexity of pathways, the
many transformations of the molecules, the vital role of biotic processes. On the basis of that analogy
we propose to consider the traditional term metabolism as inner metabolism or endometabolism. By
contrast, we propose to consider the pathways of molecules in the aquatic medium of ecosystems as
external metabolism or exometabolism. If we accept the terms endometabolism and exometabolism,
we can consider their sum as the integral metabolism of pollutants in aquatic ecosystems.

Biochemistry, Russian Academy of Sciences, Leninskii pr. 33, Moscow, 117071 Russia; Short Abstract:
This is the first study of elemental composition of the pellets produced by freshwater bivalves, a first
measurement of the amount of the pellets produced by the freshwater bivalves per 1 kg of the biomass
and per 1 m2 of the surface of the bottom ecosystem, a first measurement of the role of the moluscs
and their pellets in the biogeochemical flows of the chemical elements (C, N, P, Si, and Al). It is the first
time that the new facts are reported that some chemical pollutants (synthetic surfactants) in a dramatic
way inhibit the biogeochemical function of the mollusks by inhibiting the transfer of the chemical
elements with their pellets. More detailed data are given in the text below and in a larger text of the
abstract at the end of the text. Full text of the paper: Aquatic invertebrates excrete pellets [1,2], which

consist of the products of incomplete digestion and pseudofeces. Different taxons are characterized by
the following values of food assimilability (in percents): Rotatoria, 4880; Bryozoa, 41.6; Gastropoda,
4282; Bivalvia, 4047; Cladocera, 50.585.5; Copepoda, 30 88; Mysidacea, 84.295; Isopoda, 68;
Amphipoda, 5.5 98; Decapoda, 38.796.1; larvae of Odonata, 2097.2; Ephemeroptera, 4172;
Plecoptera, 973; Trichoptera, 551; and Diptera, 131.4 [2]. When settling to the bottom of water
bodies by gravity, pellets contribute to vertical fluxes of chemical elements through the ecosystem level
of the biospheric biogeochemical cycles or into biogenic migration of atoms in the biosphere *3+. The
purpose of this study was to estimate the capacity of mollusk pellets for contributing into the vertical
transfer of chemical elements through an aquatic ecosystem, using Limnaea stagnalis (L.) and bivalves
(Unionidae) as examples. The mollusks L. stagnalis were collected in June in a pond in the floodplain of
the upper Moskva River and were kept afterwards as described in [4]. Bivalve mollusks (Unionidae)
collected from the partly silted sand bottom of the Moskva River upstream of the town of Zvenigorod
represented a sample from a natural benthic community dominated by Unio tumidus and U. pictorum
(63.21 and 27.36%, respectively, of the overall number of specimens in the sample). The proportions of
Crassiana crassa and Anodonta cygnea were lower (7.55 and 1.89%, respectively). The bivalves sampled
from the natural ecosystem (the total biomass was 3302 g wet weight, including the shells; the average
weight of one mollusk was 21.9 g), where they filtered natural seston, were incubated for 24 h in a wide
flask containing settled tap water to obtain the pellet precipitate, which was afterwards resuspended in
a 300-ml glass cylinder. The sand fraction, which precipitated within 15 s (fraction 1), was separated
from the remaining suspension of the pellet material per se. The latter was transferred into another
glass cylinder. From this suspension, pellets precipitated within 3 h (fraction 2);

RESULTS IN STUDIES OF CHEMICO-BIOTIC INTERACTIONS AND ENVIRONMENTAL CHEMISTRY

EVALUATION of Dr. S.A. Ostroumovs publications. Recently a number of publications were published

that were focused on issues of chemico-biotic interactions in the biosphere [1-46]. We would like to
respond to those publications and to express our opinion. In these publications, new facts were
discovered and new fundamental concepts were formulated. They contribute to new insight of the
following two aspects of those topics, namely: (1) how chemicals affect organisms ([2, 9] and others)
and (2) how organisms produce effects on the chemistry of the environment ([1, 2, 4, 6] and others).
These works led to origin of new fundamental concepts in ecology and sciences on the environment and
biosphere [2, 3, 5, 10]. Moreover, the new facts and concepts were useful to creating scientific basis for
new technologies of monitoring and decontamination of the environment [1, 2, 4, 7, 8]. The works of Dr
S.A. Ostroumov on chemico-biotic interactions and on the issues of ecology, biology, studies of the
biosphere features a fundamental approach, novelty, and contain a great amount of new

results of

his experiments. Those results are of significant practical importance to environmental safety,
sustainable use of natural resources, sustainable development, biodiversity protection, development of
science on nanomaterials, improvement and modernization of university education. His achievements
were recognized both in his country and internationally. References (the English translation of the list of

Freshwater Bivalves and Detergents

FRESHWATER BIVALVES AND DETERGENTS: http://www.scribd.com/doc/59520854/ A USEFUL ROLE OF
FRESHWATER BIVALVES (the Latin name of this species of the bivalve mollusk is Unio tumidus) IN
MAKING WATER CLEAN WAS DISCOVERED IN THIS PAPER; ANOTHER DISCOVERY IS ON HOW
CHEMICALS MAY UNDERMINE THIS USEFUL ROLE. Keywords: discovery, water quality, mollusks,
chemical pollution The first data on the discovery that some chemical pollutants (detergents and
surfactants) decreased the filtration rate by the mass freshwater mollusks, freshwater mussels Unio
tumidus. A new type of complex anthropogenic effects on ecosystem was found, which the author
proposed to name synecological summation. Important to sustainability of water resources.

Microsummary: For the first time, oysters were used as the test-organisms in bioassay of synthetic
surfactants and detergents. The new data revealed a novel type of hazard to mariculture. New negative
effects of surfactants and chemical mixtures on water filtering activity of Crassostrea gigas were
discovered. The abstract, key words, full text and Addendum (with references of recent relevant
publications) are below. ABSTRACT: Effects of amphiphilic chemicals on filter-feeding marine organisms.
S.A.Ostroumov For the first time, oysters were used as the test-organisms in bioassay of synthetic
surfactants. As surfactants are one of key components of water pollution from municipal waste waters,
from ports and ships, the new data revealed a novel type of hazard to mariculture of oysters. New
negative effects of several amphiphilic chemicals (surfactants) and chemical mixtures on oysters and
other marine bivalves were discovered. An anionic surfactant, sodium dodecylsulphate (SDS), and a
cationic surfactant, tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide (TDTMA) inhibited water filtering activity of
oysters (Crassostrea gigas). Similar effects were exhibited by some chemical mixture products
(detergents) that included surfactants as components of the mixtures. Those mixture products inhibited
filtering activity by Crassostrea gigas and Mytilus galloprovincialis. The mixture products tested were:
the SD1(L), Lanza-automat (Benckiser); SD2(I), IXI Bio-Plus (Cussons); LD1 (E), dish washing liquid E
(Cussons International, Ltd.); and LD2 (F), dish washing liquid Fairy (Procter & Gamble, Ltd.). The new
results are in agreement with the authors previous experiments, where a number of xenobiotics and/or
pollutants inhibited the filtering activity of several species of marine and freshwater bivalves. The
filtering activity contributes to improving water quality. This experimental approach is helpful in
assessment of environmental hazard from man-made chemicals that contaminate marine ecosystems.
KEY WORDS: mariculture of oysters Crassostrea gigas, surfactants, detergents, filtering activity, Mytilus

Presented by Academician M.E. Vinogradov October 9, 2000; Received October 17, 2000; Moscow State
University, Vorobevy gory, Moscow, 119991 Russia; It has been previously shown that some
amphiphilic chemicals (surfactants) and surfactant-containing chemical mixtures affect filtering activity
of mussels [1, 2]. Taking into account the ecological importance of this effect [36], it was of interest to
broaden the view of this problem and to determine whether organisms important for aquiculture may
be affected by these compounds. Bivalves are the most important cultured marine species. It was shown
that the average annual production of marine bivalves grown in aquaculture significantly exceed that of
marine fish (9.7-fold) and Crustaceans (4-fold) grown in mariculture [7]. Owing to the importance of
mariculture, it is necessary to determine the factors that may disturb physiological activity of

alteration of the water plant Elodie Brazilian (Elodea Brazilian, Egeria densa) under the action of
synthetic active compounds and salts of cadmium are submitted. The criterion used in the differential
backscattering coefficient were used as criterion and expresses the changes in the concentration of
chlorophyll in the plant under the influence of pollutants. The detailed analysis of structural changes in
plant cells was performed by fluorescent confocal microscopy. It is shown that surfactants solubilize
membrane- bound proteins, leading to a significant change in membrane permeability and,
consequently the optical characteristics of the biological tissue. Key words: method of differential

8:43-53. Abstract: The aquatic ecosystems near to urban zone have a constant risk by several physical
and chemical factors relative to human activities. This provokes synergic effects on aquatic organisms,
being the domestic sewage an important factor to assess, highlighting the detergents. The cladocerans

Daphnia magna, there is not originate in the Neotropical region, is a specie more used in
ecotoxicological assays in the world by its easy culture and short life cycle. The aim of the work is
observe as affect the commercial detergent on D. magna and their reproductive fitness. This was
realized with chronic assays of isolated and grouped individuals using three sublethal concentrations of
anionic detergent, previously the C was determined. The assays lasted 21 days, daily the 50 neonates
were registered. These were counted and measured. In the chronic assays, the isolated individuals
produced 262 embryos in the control group, being alike to two lower concentrations. The neonates
were more abundant in the higher concentration than in lower and control ones. In the grouped animal
experience, the increase in the egg number was progressive to detergent concentration. In this study,
the detergent could be induced a production of more abundant and viable offspring. This could be
associated with that the detergent permit an effective use of trophic resource and bioavailability of
energy to reproduction, when the detergent discharge breaks down the particles or algal cells offered as
food. L Key words: anionic detergent, reproduction, cladocerans.

antimicrobial polyurethane coatings were prepared aiming at self-stratification. A hydroxyl end-capped
liquid oligoester consisting of three equimolar diacids and an excess of 1,4-butanediol has been
synthesized by a condensation reaction. A set of quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) which are
well known contact killers, was synthesized via a straightforward quaternization reaction. These

synthesized precursors were later covalently bonded to the polymer network by addition of a
polyisocyanate crosslinker resulting in antimicrobial polyurethane coatings. Self-stratification was
confirmed by dynamic contact angle analysis and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The final films
showed strong antimicrobial activity against both Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus and Gramnegative Escherichia coli type bacteria. Highlights Antimicrobial polyurethane coatings are prepared
via a self-stratification approach. QACs covalently attached to the polymer network are used as
antimicrobial species. Films show strong antimicrobial activity against S. aureus and E. coli type
bacteria. Keywords: Antimicrobial coating; Quaternary ammonium compound; Self-stratification

a variety of biological activities, including toxicity. The goal of this review articles is to summarize some
evidence of a variety of toxic effects produced by manufactured nanoparticles, including both the data
from literature and the new data of the authors (e.g., [42]). The toxicity of nanomaterials was shown
both to prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms. As for eukaryotic organisms, toxicity was found in
bioassays with both animal and plant test systems. In further studies, it is necessary to continue the
studies of various aspects of toxicity of nanoparticles, and to extend the range of organisms and test
systems that are being used for assessing the biological effects of nanomaterials. The methods that
were previously developed to study phytotoxicity of chemicals [15-28, 48] will be useful to generate new
data on toxicology of nanomaterials. INTRODUCTION. Manufactured nanoparticles (NP) and
nanomaterials (nanometer materials) are a new type of man-made chemical products that are produced
in significant amounts and finally may enter the environment [1]. Their toxic and ecotoxicological
characteristics should be studied in detail. The goal of this review is to summarize some evidence of a
variety of toxic effects produced by manufactured nanoparticles and nanomaterials. In this paper, we
used many publications in the international scientific literature (cited in the list of references), and our
own data on plants. Among many sources, especially useful was the paper by Jiang et al. (2009) [2].
TOXICITY OF NANOPARTICLES. There are many publications that reported various types of toxicity
produced by nanoparticles. Some of the examples are summarized in Table 1. The results are

Moscow, MAX Press, 2011. 20 p. Volume 17 of the series includes the innovative analysis of the main
types of matter in the biosphere. The main two challenges to the current conceptualization of the types
of matter in the biosphere are addressed. To meet and respond to the challenges, on the basis of his
new experiments, the author suggested a new conceptualization which is based on his suggestion to
identify so called ex-living matter (ELM). The author discusses his experiments (together with his coauthors) which provide the factual foundation to this conceptualization, as well as other data available

in literature. The main functions of ELM in the biosphere were also formulated and considered by the
author. Some alternatives and variants of the name for the new type of matter are also included in the
publication. The publication is of interest to scholars in the fields of ecology, biogeochemistry,
limnology, oceanography, environmental sciences, as well as to university professors and educators.

Sciences. 2002 (March). Vol. 383 (1-6): 127-130. Bibliogr.15. ISSN 0012-4966. Discovery of a new type of
negative impact of pollutants on the biosphere, as a result of inhibition of water filtration by filterfeeders / suspension feeders. The water filtration and associated removal of suspended matter from
water is part of migration of matter. As V.I. Vernadsky stressed, organisms are mediators of biogenic
migration of atoms in the biosphere. This migration is partly implemented in the framework of
pelagialbenthal coupling via the activity of filter-feeders, which remove the organic suspended matter
from water and excrete pellets. The tables contains the following data: the average percentage of
assimilated (16-90%) and non-assimilated (10-84%) food matter for 15 large taxa of invertebrates (Table
1); potassium bichromate inhibited water filtration by mussels Mytilus galloprovincialis (Table 2);
surfactants, detergents, pesticides inhibited filtration by filter-feeders, marine and freshwater bivalves
and rotifers (Table 3). A prediction was made: "Further research and experimental studies are expected
to provide new evidence that sublethal concentrations of chemical pollutants induce a significant
decrease in the filtration capacity of freshwater and marine filter feeders" (p.129). "The uncoupling
process considered above is an anthropogenic violation of two basic laws (empirical rules or
biogeochemical principles) of the biosphere functioning: (1) biogenic migration of atoms of chemical
elements in the biosphere always tends toward its maximum expression; (2) on the geological time
scale, the evolution of species gives rise to the forms of life that are stable in the biosphere, and is so
directed that the biogenic migration of atoms in the biosphere increases" (p.129).];

http://www.springerlink.com/content/vpg4yu2v3yd6t97b/ In 1935 the term 'ecosystem' was coined by
A. Tansley. In the 1940s, another important term, 'biogeocoenosis', was introduced by V. N. Sukachev.
Since that time, a lot of new facts have accumulated in ecology. It is necessary to revisit the formulation
of the basic concepts and terms in ecology, including the two terms mentioned above. The author
proposed some new variants of the definition of the two terms that (1) reflect the modern vision of the
basics of ecology; and (2) avoid the vicious circle of using other terms that in turn request their require
definitions. The author realizes that the new variants of the terms cannot be ideal and some other
variants of the definitions are also possible. Tables: 5 specific features of the proposed definition of
ecosystem (Table 1); 8 specific features of the proposed definition of biogeocenosis, and 8 distinctions
between the proposed definition and the classical definition by V.N.Sukachev (Table 2).

accumulation of elements in aquatic systems. ABSTRACT: The biogenic detritus that accumulated over >
7 months in the microcosms with Viviparus viviparus, Unio pictorum, Ceratophyllum demersum,
contained several elements. For the first time the concentrations of those elements in the detritus of
this type were measured. Their concentrations were measured using neutron activation analysis (NAA).
The concentrations of the elements decreased in the order: Ca > Zn > Ba > Br > Ce > Se > Nd > La > U > Hf
> Sb > Th > Sm > S> Cs > Au. The new data added some new information to the modern vision of the
polyfunctional role of the biota in the functioning of water systems. : ..,

State University, Moscow, Russia L. L. DEMINA Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of
Sciences, Moscow, Russia Metals were measured in the biogenic detritus that accumulated over 8
months in the microcosms with Viviparus viviparus and Ceratophyllum demersum. Their concentrations
were measured using atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS). The concentrations decreased in the order:
Fe > Mn > > Zn > Cu > Pb > Cd > >Cr. Following the addition of the metals (Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Cd, Cr) into the
water of the microcosm, those metals were found in the sedimented detritus at concentrations higher
than in the control. The most pronounced increase was found for Cd (the increase by the factor of over
3), and for Cr (the increase by the factor of over 100). The new data confirm the recent theory of the
polyfunctional role of the biota in water quality control and water selfpurification. Keywords:

Christmas tree worms (Spirobranchus giganteus) as a potential bioindicator species of sedimentation
stress in coral reef environments of Bonaire, Dutch Caribbean; Meaghan Harty; Oberlin College;
Abstract: The effect of land-based pollution on Bonaires coral reef ecosystem has not been wellquantified. Observations of the coral reefs of Bonaire show a great abundance of the polychaete
Spirobranchus giganteus. This study investigated whether S. giganteus is sensitive to the environmental
stress caused by wastewater pollution and therefore could be used as a bioindicator species of pollution
in coral reef health assessments. Pollution indicators were assessed through the analysis of water
samples, concentrating on the levels of ammonia, nitrate, nitrite and phosphate, sediment levels, and
fecal contamination. To allow for comparison between differing levels of water pollution, six different
sites were chosen with various levels of expected pollution impact by their proximity to resorts.
Abundance of S. giganteus and coral reef cover at these sites were analyzed through transects at
different depths. No significance was found between S. giganteus density and nutrient levels or fecal
contamination. This study found a significant positive correlation (r = 0.936) between S. giganteus
density and sedimentation rates, suggesting the possible use of S. giganteus as a bioindicator of
sedimentation_stress_on_coral_reefs. *** Information about the journal is given below: *** In Heal the
Ocean, Physis is defined as allowing nature to heal itself. We, as humans, often revel in the beauty of
nature, but a significant part of natures beauty is its ability to stand aloneit begs no human
interference. Indeed, throughout our history we have separated ourselves from nature. Our capacity for
conscious decision-making and our ability to manipulate tools have given us a distinction among
animals: rather than melding with the environment around us in mutualistic relationships, we have
become an opposing force, interrupting and often harming the natural flow of planet earths biology.
Without us, nature weaves an intricate web of species and ecosystems that have evolved with precision
to withstand disease and destruction. Our involvement has resulted in the degradation of our homes
finest attributes. It may sound harsh, but in many respects we have become the patrons of disease and
destruction. Physis is the way the earth is, the way the earth heals itself, and the way the earth
progresses over time. It is the interconnectedness of every ecosystem on earth, the way the forests of
Mali affect the worldwide climate, or how the dust from Africa spreads and has effects on the other side
of the globe. At this point in time we must realize that we have disrupted Physis, and we must begin the
delicate process of re-instilling it into the earth to protect our home for generations
