Dear Parents, I am delighted to have your child in my fifth grade class this year!

We have gotten off to a wonderful start and everyone has been working extremely hard. I must say I am very pleased. This is a wonderful group of students and I am honored to have the privilege of being your childs teacher this year. In order to make communication between home and school a little smoother, I thought it would be very helpful for you to be able to reinforce with your child at home what is expected of them each day, if you know most of my requirements. I have enclosed a small packet of information for you that explains my policies. If there are ever any questions during the year, I will be more than happy to arrange a conference with you. I appreciate your support in helping to adequately prepare your child for middle school, and the future. My desire is that we communicate in a timely fashion when the need should arise, in order to make this year, the most enjoyable year of learning and growing for all of us. I would just like to say thank you again and that I look forward to working with you and your child throughout the school year. I have provided every parent with two copies of this guide. I would like for each parent to carefully go over the entire handout with their child, and sign anywhere a signature is required. Christie M. Hayes 5-05 Room 151 Classroom Management and Routines Oak Forest Elem. / 5th Grade In my fifth Grade Classroom, this is the management/routines plan that I will implement and follow. When the students enter the room these are routines, and procedures they would be expected to perform on a daily basis. Morning 1. Come in quietly. 2. Get breakfast 3. Unpack my backpack. 4. Place Blue Folder in its slot. 5. Keep homework on your desk. 6. Sharpen at least 2 pencils. 7. Place any notes from home in white basket on my desk. 8. Place lunch money for the week in blue basket on my desk. 9. Hang backpack and coat on a hook. 10. Start morning work and eat breakfast 11. Sit in desk and wait quietly for the morning announcements while completing morning work and finishing breakfast 12. After announcements quickly and quietly prepare class circle for the Morning Meeting. 13. Check morning work as a part of the morning meeting. During the course of the day, there will be certain procedures for transitions, Reading Groups, and leaving the class for lunch, bathroom, any other support class, and dismissal. Reading Group 1. After the whole group instruction of the reading lesson for the day, I will instruct the class as to what they are supposed to be working on. The first thing they must do is complete their reading assignment. 2. After they have completed their reading assignment those students not in leveled reading groups are free to read and AR test. 3. After they have AR tested, they are free to visit any center in the classroom that does not already have four students using it. Centers will include Math, Reading, Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies. The centers will be rotated to be current with the current skill we are currently working on, in the Reading content area. The targeted skill in reading will be reflected in all centers. (Ex. If the targeted skill is sequencing, then each center will have an activity that deals with that skill.) 4. Once the students have completed the center activity, they must obtain a center worksheet, and return to their desk to complete the questions that measure their understanding of what they learned at the center. 5. Then those who are were at the reading group will go back to their desk, and start on the reading assignment, and then work their way down the list until we are ready to continue with whole class instruction again.

Transitions Before moving on to the next subject, I would first make sure everyone is listening, and on task, and get those who are off task back on track. Between each subject, I will begin by reviewing the skill or concept from the day before. 1. Transition to Language Arts: Make several statements orally, and ask the students to orally state what needs to be done in order for it to be correct. Then related that to what we will be doing for the day. 2. Transition to Math: Everyday will Count by starting each math lesson with the calendar math program before we move into our regular math series. Then, I will have several math problems on the board, and have the students solve those problems at their desk. Then ask for volunteers to work them out, and tell how they did it at the board. Build on that skill by going forward to the next skill or concept for the day. 3. Transition to Science: Use the concept attainment method to have them review what we learned form the day before use it to see if they can figure out what our lesson for the day will be about. 4. Transition into Social Studies: Have them think of how what ever concept we are talking about relates to their lives, and were they have seen it in their communities. Distribution and Collection of Papers Each subject will have a special bin that is only for work done in that subject. For example, the math bin will be labeled MATH, and all of the students will know that only math for that day should be placed in that bin. Homework will use the same system. Distribution of papers to be completed in class will be carried out by the random selection of a student that has had good behavior for the day. Those papers that are to be passed-out to take home to be signed will also be randomly selected students with good behavior. Leaving the Classroom Leaving the classroom for any reason will only take place when everyone is seated and quiet. Those students who seem to do this task the fastest will be selected to line up first. Sometimes this will consist of whole groups. Once the ones that are not on task see others getting to line up first, and being commended on their excellent behavior, they to will want to sit quietly, and be called on to get in line. Once in line those who want to start talking will be asked to go to the end of the line. If this does not quite them down they will begin to receive conduct marks on their daily conduct sheet. Once out in the hall the students will know that they are to stop at each doorway before moving on with the teachers permission. While stopped each student is expected to stand quietly on their square, and wait to proceed with the teacher. Each child has a number. Even when certain groups can line up first, they will always stand in line according to their number. This will prevent any pushing or shoving in line to be first, because everyone always knows exactly where they should be. Dismissal At the end of the day, each student will be expected to sit quietly at their desk until the teacher gives them permission to go to their bins, and obtain their belongings. Again, those who sit quietly will be allowed to retrieve their things first. Once they retrieve their things, and have packed up all the things they need to take home, they must sit quietly until they are asked to line up at the door to be dismissed. All personal items and books not taken home for homework or to study must be neatly stored in their crate or underneath their desk in the rack, and the crate must be placed on top of the desk.

Management I believe that discipline in the classroom should allow for all students to manage their own behavior by exercising self-control. If self-control is taught early on, then it is my belief that it will continue to develop over the course on ones lifetime enabling the individual to make decisions and choices based on their best interest. This is why I have chosen the rules below to allow for an enriching academic environment that will allow for both the student and teacher to monitor inappropriate as well as appropriate behavior. A complete list of rules, expectations, and procedures are attached. Each student has a personal copy of all rules, expectations, and procedures that they must keep in their binders at all times. Each child will be sent home with a note for their parent to sign with their child stating that they both have read over all rules, expectations, and procedures confirming that everyone knows what is to be expected each and every day. My classroom rules are few, and cover a wide or broad range. The list of rules that I will post in my fifth grade classroom, are as follows: Rules 1. Be Responsible 2. Be Respectable 3. Be Kind 4. Homework Policy I believe homework is an important part of the educational process. It is a valuable tool that assists in helping students make the most of their experiences in school. It is also an excellent way to stay actively involved in your childs education. I assign homework because it is very useful in reinforcing the skills that have been taught during class. It also prepares students for upcoming lessons; it extends and generalizes concepts, teaches responsibility and helps students develop positive study habits. I feel that parents are the key to making homework a positive experience for their child. Therefore, I ask that parents make homework a top priority by providing the necessary supplies and a quiet environment to complete homework. It might also prove very beneficial if a time is set daily for the completion of homework, in addition to providing plenty of support and praise even when the task seems very difficult. I will assign homework Monday through Thursday nights on most occasions. Homework should take no longer than 55 minutes to complete each night for the average child. This does not include studying for test or working on projects. I will expect students to do their best on all homework assignments. I expect for it to be neat; not sloppy. I also expect for each student to do their own work and only ask for help after they have given it their best effort. If students choose not to do their homework, they will not receive credit for that day, for which a zero will be recorded. If, a student continues to fail to turn in homework, they will continue not to receive credit and will have to write a note saying they did not complete their homework, take it home have it signed, and then the parents will have to sign all their completed homework in the future. If there is a legitimate reason for why a student is not able to complete their homework, the parent must send a note on the day the homework is due explaining the extenuating circumstances. This note must be signed and dated by the parent. The homework must be turned in the following day with any new homework that has been assigned to avoid receiving a zero. Field Trip Policy This letter is to inform parents and students of my field trip policy. Children make the decision themselves of whether they will or will not participate in a field trip. This means that I reserve the right not to allow a student to participate in a field trip if their behavior in any area of school does not reflect an E or an S at all times. This means that they must exhibit good behavior on the bus, during support classes, in the cafeteria, and of course in the classroom. It is always a good idea to give students the chance to exhibit how responsible they are. This is why I always inform the students in advance when there will be a field trip. This will allow if necessary, the students to save up their snack money or allowance to pay for their trip. There may be trips that that cost nothing, while others will require a nominal fee for the trip. There may be field trips that fee waiver will not cover. In those cases, I will let the parents know in a reasonable amount of time, so that other provisions can be made. Parents are always welcomed on any and all field trips. Please do not bring anyone else. The cost to parents is usually very reasonable. However, parents must provide their own transportation on most outings.

Communication

I am available for conferences Monday through Friday. However, if you need a conference please schedule one with me first. Some days I am only available in the morning, while other days I am available both mornings and afternoons. This will insure we will see each other at a time that works for both of us. I can also be contacted via email at hayescm@mcsk12.net. Please use email for school related purposes only. Please, NO forwarded email. If it is at all possible I would also like to communicate with parents via email. Therefore please provide me with an email address that is checked frequently if at all possible. I can also be reached by phone at 416-2247. Please leave a message with someone in the office if you have to, and I will be sure to return your call in a timely manor. The Blue Wednesday folder is another way to communicate with me. I will always try my best to respond to your concern or request within a reasonable amount of time. The Blue weekly folder will be sent home on Wednesdays on most occasions. Inside the folder their will be a progress report with work from the previous week(s) attached, important notes, grades, conduct, and a comments section for both parent and teacher to voice concerns or praise. Each Student is expected to be at school everyday unless they are too ill to attend. Each Student is expected to be at school on time everyday. The tardy bell rings at 8:30, and each student must be inside my room (152) when it rings. Each Student is expected to be on their best behavior and follow all classroom and school rules at all times. Each student is expected to act respectfully, treat everyone with respect, and respect themselves, the school, and all school property. As 5th Graders we understand what is expected of us at all times. We know that Ms. Hayes and our parents have very high expectations for us, and they expect great things from us. We understand that we are expected to 1. Complete all our homework and turn it in on time. 2. Complete all our class work and turn it in on time. 3. Have all supplies and books needed for school at school everyday. 4. Have our conduct sheets at school each day at school, and have it signed every night by a parent. 5. Take home our BLUE Wednesday folder every Wednesday, have the things in it signed, and we know we are expected to return it the next day. 6. To keep all the rules, expectations, and procedures in our binders at all times, and read over them to make sure we our doing all the things we should. If we lose them we must find a way to replace them, because we know they must be in our binders at all times, and if they are not, we will get checks on our conduct sheets. 7. Above all else, we understand that if at anytime we are not doing as we should it will result in checks on our conduct sheet, which will bring down our finial conduct grade on our report card at the end of the six weeks. 8.
