Finding your subject According to the book, your writing must be suitable for the assignment, it should be neither too general nor too limited for the assigned deadline or the paper length, it should be something you should be willing to learn more about, even something you care about (5). [Unsolicited advice: its not a bad idea to use Google (Google Scholars even better) for your research later on in the writing process, but I want to caution you about using to initially find your topic. You may be tempted to type in paper topics or expository essay topics into the search field and Bata-boombata-bang you have a topic. I encourage that you not do this because you might end up with a paper topic for which you feel apathetic. Go deeper than using Googles robust search engine even if you just have to make a rough list of your interests that do not seem academic on the surface. ] Describe your Writing Situation (refer to 3-4 in LBCH) in the space provided (use the back of this handout if you need to.
