The term ‘E-number’ applies to the incorporation in food of a range of addi-

tives, such as antioxidants, colours, emulsifiers, stabilisers, flavour enhancers,

flavourings, preservatives and sweeteners. Where a food additive is identified

by an E-number, this implies it has been tested for food safety and is approved

for use throughout the European Union. This approval is monitored, reviewed

and amended in the light of new scientific data.
