Abstract
On the basis of percent depth dose (PDD) calculation, the application of dosimetry in radiotherapy has an
{important role to play in reducing the chance of tumor recurrence. The aim of this study was to introduce a new
formula for calculating the centeral axis pereent depth doses of Coball-60 beam. In the present study, based on
the British Joumal of Radiology (BJR) table, nine new formulas were developed and evaluated for depts of 0.5
= 30 em and fields of (4-4) — (45 45) cm, The results ofthis study indicated that one out ofall nine formulas
gave a better agreement with the PDs in the table of BIR. The agreement was evaluated according 0 the
diffemce between the tabulated and calculated data. The new formula has two ranges of depth (0.5 ~ 5, 6 ~ 30
cm), The average of differences berween the tabulated and calculated data using the Formula is equal to 0.3152,
‘Therefore, the calculated percent depth dose data based on this formula has a better ageement with the published
data for Cobalt-60 source.
1 Introduction
Dosimetry of radiotherapy treatment beam is a very
important procedure because suevesstul radiation
therapy requires an accurate delivery of dose t0 a can
cerous volume of tissue. It is believed that a decrease
‘of 10 15% in dose delivery will result in a deerease
inthe chance of eure by a factor of 2 or 3 while anit
crease in dose will similarly inerease the chance of
irreversible damage (1). ICRU (Intemational Commis-
sion on Radiation Units and Measurements) recom-
mends an accuracy of + 5% inthe delivery ofthe dose
in radiotherapy [2]. A lot of researches in radiotherapy
‘make emphasis on dose measurement and calculation
and introduce new methods for dose calelation [3]
Sterling etal. in 1964 presented a formula to calculate
the percent depth dose as a function of depth and
og(A/P) (8). In 1967, Sterling etal. used @ modified
formula to obtain a better agreement between the
measured and the calculated values by dividing the
