1938) Kid Ory (December 25, 1886January 23, 1973) Instrument Trumpet Major Contribution His creole jazz band was the first to be recorded and was known for his use of mutes. He developed tailgate. In "tailgate" style the trombone plays a rhythmic line underneath the trumpets and cornets. Know as jazzs first arranger. He proved that even though jazz is a genre of improv that it can still contain its original form. Known for his trumpet style piano playing. He was a master of dynamics and tension and release. Mastered the stride style. Able to pick up on any key to play along with. He is credited with creating a looser, more improvised version of ragtime and adding blues to it. Father of Jazz First female instrumentalists.

Invented the jazz ballad style. Cool Jazz Noted for his heavily blues-laden style. Dodds varied his drum patterns with accents and flourishes, and he generally kept the beat with the bass drum while playing buzz rolls on the snare. Forceful delivery, wellconstructed improvisations, and a distinctive, wide vibrato characterized Bechet's playing. His contributions to the language of jazz trombonists was his ability to interject the blues or merely a "blue feeling" into virtually any piece of music. Bessie Smith was a soprano with a more urban, polished style. Known for her energetic disposition, majestic phrasing, and a moaning style of singing
