HONG KONG ADVANCED LEVEL EXAMINATION 2005 CHEMISTRY A-LEVEL PAPER 2 1.30 pm-4.30 pm (3 hours) This paper must be answered in English 1. There are TWO sections in this paper, Section A and Section B, 2. Section A carries 60 marks and Section B carries 40 marks. 3. Answer THREE questions from Section A and ‘TWO questions from Section B. 4. Answers to questions in Sections A and B are to be the AL(O)1 and AL(E) Answer Books respectively. 5. Some useful constants and a Periodic Table are respectively printed on pages 18 and 19 of this, question book. SECTION A Answer any THREE questions, using the AL(C)1 Answer Book. 1 @ ) 2008-AL-CHEM 2-2 Briefly describe the principle underlying the use of carbon-14 dating in the estimation of the age of an archaeological specimen. X is a trivalent metal. (S marks) When treated with hydrochloric acid, X(s) gives hydrogen, while its oxide X20s(s) undergoes neutralisation. o ai) Write the chemical equation for the reaction of X(3) with HClaq) and that of X,0,(6) with HCK(aq). 16.5 g of a mixture of X(s) and X,03(5) is allowed to react with 6.0 M HCl(aq). 95.4 cm’ of the acid is required for bboth the metal and its oxide to undergo complete reaction. Deduce respectively the greatest possible value and the smallest possible value of the relative atomic mass of X. With reference to the Periodic Table on page 19, deduce what X may be. (7 marks) ¥9 (©) Each of six reagent bottles labelled A, B, C, D, E and F contained ne of the following solutions: AgNO,(aq), BaCl;(aq), H;SO,(aq), NHy(aq), NaOH(aq) and Na;S,0,(aq) In an attempt to identify the contents of the bottles, a series of tests ‘were conducted by mixing two of the solutions. ‘The table below lists the observations in these tests Solutions being mixed Observations AandC Abrown precipitate is formed AandE A white precipitate is formed A brown precipitate is initially formed, Aand F and the precipitate dissolves when F is in excess BandC Only heat is liberated Bea A pale yellow Pcie is formed Band E A white precipitate is formed Identify, with explanation, the contents of the six reagent bottles based on the above information. (8 marks) 2005-AL-CHEM 2-3 () Mixtures of liquid G and liquid H behave as ideal solutions. At 340 K, the vapour pressure of G and that of Hare 13.0 kPa 5.3 kPa respectively. @ A liquid mixture consists of 70.0 mol % of G and 30.0 mol % of H. Calculate, at 340K, (the vapour pressure of the liquid mixture, (1) the mole percent of G in the vapour in equilibrium with this liquid mixture, (ii) Explain why fractional distillation can be used to separate G from a mixture of G and H. (6 marks) ‘The following three redox reactions take place at room temperature: (1) KMnO4(s) reacts with concentrated HCl(aq) to give Chg). (2) Fe*(aq) reacts with Ch(g) to give Fe™(aq), ) Acidified KMn0,(aq) is decolourised by SOx(2). (Write a chemical equation for each of the three reactions described above. i) Is it possible to predict from the above information whether any reaction would occur in the following experiments ? Explain your answer. If it is possible to predict a reaction, write the chemical equation for the reaction. () Adding FeS0,(aq) to acidified KMnO,(aq) (U1) Passing SO,(g) into Fe"(aq), (7 marks) 2008-AL-CHEM 2-4 so 2 (©) Account for the following: (Among the three elements carbon, nitrogen and oxygen, nitrogen has the greatest first ionisation enthalpy. (ii) Sulphur dioxide possesses a net dipole moment while carbon dioxide does not, (iii) All carbon-carbon bonds in benzene have the same length 2005-AL-CHEM 2-5 (7 marks) @ ) Arrange the following oxoacids of chlorine in order of increasing acidity, and explain your arrangement. HCIO, HCIO;, HCIO, and HCIO, GB marks) Fullerenes refer to the class of near spherical allotropes of carbon including Cy, Cy and Cy. They are made by electric arc discharge of graphite rods in an inert atmosphere. (i) A sample is known to contain the above-mentioned fullerenes. Suggest an instrumental method to show the presence of these fullerenes in the sample and state the expected results, Gi) Ceo is the most widely studied fullerene. It crystallises in a closely packed face-centred cubic structure. The diagram on page 6 shows a representation of the unit cell Of Ceo (0) With reference to the diagram, calculate the number of carbon atoms in a unit cell of Ces. (1) The face-centred cubic structure canbe. considered as a repetition of three different layers of closely packed Cyp molecules. Mark, on the diagram, three different layers of Ceo molecules in this cubic structure. (6 marks) (Parts (c) and (d) of this question are on page 8.) 2008-AL-CHEM 2-6
