TUTORIAL PROBLEMS 2

Q.1 The uniform flow about a circular cylinder of radius a, is to be transformed into the flow about a symmetric airfoil using the Zhukovsky transformation : = z + b2 /z (i) Show that a general point P on the circle is given by : a2 = r 2+ ( a - b)2 - 2 r ( a - b ) cos where (r, ) are polar co-ordinates in the -plane (ii) If a = b ( 1+ ), where is small and of the order of 0.1, deduce that r = b [ 1 + ( 1 + cos ) ] (iii) Also if ( , ) are the co-ordinates in the -plane, show that : = 2 b cos and = 2 b ( 1 + cos ) sin (iv) Hence show that the maximum thickness of the Zhukovski profile occurs at cos = 0.5 (v) Taking = 0.1, calculate at the maximum location on the surface of the Zhukovski profile : (a) (b) (c) the airfoil thickness per unit chord length the surface velocity as a percentage of free stream velocity the pressure co-efficient (Ans. (v) 0.52 , 1.137, -0.29 )

Q.2

The following information are available for a Zhukovski airfoil tested in a wind tunnel : chord , c = 152.5 mm thickness/chord , t/c = 0.15 camber , = 0.05 radians speed of air at test section, U = 18.3 m/s angle of incidence, = 100 room temperature , T = 200 C atmospheric pressure, p = 101235 N/m2 viscosity of air , = 1.83 x 10 -5 Kg/(m.sec) Calculate the: (i) (ii) (iii ) (iv) (v) (vi) Zhukovski constant, b eccentricity strength of the doublet circulation lift force (per unit span) on the airfoil drag co-efficient of the airfoil when CD = 0.01CL 2 (Ans. 38 mm, 0.1155, 0.208 m3 /s, +2.66 m2/s, 58.6 N/m, 0.03)
