World Mental Health Day

10-10-2011 is 20th anniversary of World Mental Health Day . According to World Health
Organization, WHO, Mental health is as important as physical health. Good Mental health is not
just the absence of Mental disorder.
It is also about Mental well being and ability to takecare of self , to work productively to
cope with people and to demonstrate healthy and positive behavior.This mean that a person who
is healthy mentally able to take good care of self work to his or her best ability and enjoy a
healthy life.
There are more than 150 million people suffer from depression at any point of time
(WHOs Global Burdenof Disease, 2001). In a research on prevalence of mental health problems
among victims of forced labour and human trafficking, HEI found that 70% of the 1,074 refugees
from Klang Valley who were surveyed had symptoms of depression and anxiety .
This result shows that mental healthneeds attention . Therefore we need take care of
ourselves and prevent by expressing our concerns/emotional distress with a profession who also
able to provide self-help strategies(seek for counseling), get enough sleep, follow a healthy ,
nutritious diet, exercise regularly, and avoid alcohol and other recreation drugs, get involved in
activities that make you happy.
HEI is helping Mental health issues on refugees in Malaysia . We provide information and
education onmental health through our Echo Training in the community, and we provide
assessment of mental health and counselling through our Menal Health Services unit.
