Prevalence of cataract among 200 people aged > 40 years in Ansipalayam Village and the study of associated risk factors Project done by = t= 1 tT D.S.Priya A.Sandip Chandrasekar av) -] Lal oN LAAT: 1 INTRODUCTION Cataracts are the leading cause of blindness worldwide, accounting for visual loss in about half of the world’s estimated 23 million persons with best corrected acuities of 3/60 or worse. The number of cataract blind could reach close to 40 million by the year 2025. The study by ICMR showed a wide range of prevalence of cataract form 30.1-72.2%. Southern India showed much higher rates as compared to other centers. The study estimated a cataract backlog of 7.53 million cases with majority in rural areas.
