Can the Octane of a fuel be greater

than hundred? Explain!

By definition, the maximum octane number is 100,
i.e. 100% of the solution will consist of isooctane and
the minimum possible octane number is 0, i.e. 100%
of the solution will consist of n-heptane. For
substances with higher shock resistance and higher
anti-detonation property, the octane performance
(note: not octane number) is an extrapolation of the
octane performance chart.
So the octane number of a fuel can not be greater
than 100. But if a fuel has better anti-knocking and
higher anti-detonation property than Isooctane, we
can say its Octane Performance is better and we can
net use the term “Octane Number”.
