Brahma Vaivarta Purana


Text 32 r-kna uvaca kalau daa-sahasrani haris tihati medinm devana pratima pujya astrai ca puraakam r-ka uvaca - ri Ka said; kalau - in Kali-yuga; daa- sahasrai - ten thousand; hari - Lord Ka; tihati - stays; medinm - on the earth; devanam - of the demigods; pratima - the deity; pujya - tobe worshiped; astrai - scriptures; ca - and; puraakam - Puras. ri Ka said: Lord Hari will stay on this earth for the first ten-thousand years of Kali-yuga. For that time the deities of the demigods will be worshiped and the Purnas and scriptures will also be present.

Text 33 tad-ardham api trthani gagadini su-nicitam tad-ardha grama-deva ca veda ca viduam api tad-ardham - half of that; api - also; t rthani - holy places; ga gadini - beginning with the Ga su-ni citam - indeed; tad- ardham - half of that; grama-deva - village g; temples; ca - and; veda - Vedas; ca - and; vidu am - of the wise; api - also. For half that period the Gag and other holy places will be present. For half that period the village temples and the Vedas studied by learned brhmanas will be present.

Text 34 adharma paripurna ca tad-ante ca kalau pita eka-varna bhaviyanti varna catvara eva ca adharma - impiety; paripura - full; ca - and; tad-ante - at the end of that; ca - and; kalau - in Kali; pita - O father; eka-vara - one varna; bhavi yanti - will be; vara varnas; catvara - four; eva - indeed; ca - and. O father, at the end of Kali-yuga impiety will reach its fullest state. Then the four varas will become a single varna.

Text 35 na mantra-putodvaha ca na hi satya na ca kama str-svkara-rato nitya gramya-dharma-pradhanata na - not; mantra - by mantras; puta - purified; udvaha - marriage; ca - and; na - not; hi - indeed; satyam - truth; na - not; ca - and; k ama - forgiveness; str - woman; sv kara - acceptance; rata - engaged; nityam - always; gramya-dharma- pradhanata on the basis of sex. Marriage purified by sacred mantras will no longer exist. There will be no truthfulness and no forgiveness. Men will associate with women only for sex.

Text 36 na yaja-sutra tilaka brahmanana ca nityaa sandhya-astra-vihna ca vipra-vaa ruta api na - not; yaj a-sutram - sacred thread; tilakam - tilaka; brahmananam - of the brahmanas; ca - and; nitya a - always; sandhya - gayatri; astra - scriptures; vih na without; ca - and; vipra-va a - the dynasty of brahmanas; ruta - learned in the ruti- stra; api - also.

Brhmaas will not wear tilaka or sacred thread, nor will they chant Gyatri or study the Vedas and other scriptures.

Text 37 sarvai sardha ca sarvea bhakaa niyama-cyutam abhakya-bhaka loka ca catur-vara ca lampaa sarvai - all; sardham - with; ca - and; sarve am - of all; bhak aam - eating; niyamacyutam - without rules; abhak ya- bhak a - eating what should not be eaten; loka the people; ca - and; catur-vara - the four varbnas; ca - and; lampa a - debauchees. Every varna will take meals with every other varna, without following any rules. The people will eat what should not be eaten. Everyone in the four varas will be a debauchee.

Text 38 naru na sat kacit pucal ca ghe ghe karoti tarjana kanta bhtyu-tulya ca kampitam nar u - among women; na - not; sat - chaste; kacit - anyone; pu cal - running after men; ca - and; g he - in home; g he - after home; karoti - does; tarjanam - rebuke; kantam - husband; bh tyu-tulyam - equal to a servant; ca - and; kampitam - trembling in fear. No woman will be chaste. In home after home the wife will be unchaste, always running after men. The wife will treat her husband like her servant. She will always rebuke him and make him tremble in fear.

jaraya - to her paramour; dattva - giving; mi annam - delicious food; tambulam betelnuts; vastra - nice garments; candanam - sandal paste; na - not; dadati - gives; eva - indeed; ca - and; aharam - food; svamine - to her husband; dukhine - unhappy; pita - O father. O father, she will give her paramour delicious foods, betelnuts, sandal paste, and costly garments, but she will not even feed her unhappy husband.

Text 40 putrena bhartsitas tata iyena bhartsito guru prajabhis taito bhupo bhupena tadita praja putrena - by the son; bhartsita - rebuked; tata - the father; i yea - by the disciple; bhartsita - rebuked; guru - the guru; prajabhi - by the citizens; taita - attacked; bhupa - the king; bhupena - by the king; tadita - attacked; praja - the citizens. A son will insult his father. A disciple will insult his guru. The citizens will attack their king. The king will torture his citizens.

Text 41 dasyu-corai ca duai ca ia ca paripita asya-hna ca vasudha kra-hna ca dhenava dasyu-corai - by theives; ca - and; du ai - wicked; ca - and; i a - remaining; ca and; parip ita - tormented; asya - crops; h na - without; ca - and; vasudha - the earth; k ra-h na - without milk; ca - and; dhenava - the cows. The people will be troubled by rogues and thieves. The earth will give no crops. Cows will give no milk.

Text 42 svalpa-kre ghta nasti navanta ca nityaa satya-hna jana sarve nitya mithya vadanti ca svalpa-k re - in a little milk; gh tam - ghee; na - not; asti - is; navan tam - butter; ca and; nitya a - always; satya- h na - without truth; jana - the people; sarve - all; nityam - always; mithya - lies; vadanti - speak; ca - and. Because there is almost no milk there will be no butter or ghee. Everyone will always speak lies.

Text 43 oca-sandhya-astra-hna brahmana va-vahaka supakara ca udrana udrana ava-dahaka oca - purifying rites; sandhya - gayatri; astra - scriptures; h na - without; brahmana brahmanas; v a-vahaka - riding on bulls; supakara - servants; ca - and; udraam - of sudras; udraam - of sudras; ava- dahaka - burning corpses. Text 44 udra-str-nirata avac chudra vipra-vadhu-rata khadanti yasya viprasya bhakya ca paripacaka udra-str -nirata - engaged with sudra woimen; a vac - always; chudra - sudras; vipra-vadhu-rata - enjoying with brahmanas' wives; khadanti - eat; yasya - of which; viprasya - of a brahmana; bhak yam - to be eaten; ca - and; paripacaka - cook.

Brhmana men will enjoy with dra women, and dra men will enjoy with brhmana women. dras will eat what brhmanas cook. Brhmanas will become cooks.

Text 45 matu para tasya patn udra ghnanti lampaa bhtya ca hatva rajana svaya raja bhaviyati matu - than mother; param - more; tasya - of him; patn m - wife; udra - dras; g hanti - accept; lampa a - debauchees; bh tya - servant; ca - and; hatva - killing; rajanam - king; svayam - own; raja - king; bhavi yati - will become. Lusty dras will enjoy with a brhmaa's wife, whom they should respect more than their own mothers. Killing the king, a servant will become king.

Text 46 nar hatva pati kamad bhajej jara ca kautukat putra ca pitara hatva svaya bhupo bhaviyati nar - a woman; hatva - killing; patim - husband; kamat - out of lust; bhajet - will worship; jaram - paramour; ca - and; kautukat - eagerly; putra - son; ca - and; pitaram - father; hatva - killing; svayam - personally; bhupa - king; bhavi yati - will become. A wife will kill her husband and worship her paramour. A prince will kill his father and become king.

Text 47 sarve svacchanda-nirata inodara-parayana vakhara vyadhi-yukta ca kutsita ca kucailaka

sarve - all; svacchanda-nirata - independent; i nodara- parayaa - devoted to belly and genitals; va khara - greedy; vyadhi-yukta - diseased; ca - and; kutsita degraded; ca - and; kucailaka - dressed in rags. Everyone will do as they please. Devoted only to belly and genitals, they will be greedy, degraded, tormented by diseases, and dressed in rags.

Text 48 vikunna-mantra-lipta ca mithya-mantra-pracaraka jati-hna ca guravo vayo-hna ca nindaka vik ua - genuine; mantra - mantras; lipta - rejected; ca - and; mithya-mantrapracaraka - chanting false mantras; jati- h na - without good birth; ca - and; gurava - gurus; vayo-h na - without advanced age; ca - and; nindaka - insulting. Gurus will reject the genuine mantras and teach false mantras. They will not come from good families. They will not be advanced in age. They will like to insult others.

Text 49 rajana capi mleccha ca yavana dharma-nindaka sat-krtim api sadhuna kurvanty unmulana muda rajana - kings; capi - and; mleccha - mlecchas; ca - and; yavana - yavans; dharmanindaka - mocking the true religion; sat- k rtim - the good reputation; api - and; sadhunam - of saintly devotees; kurvanti - do; unmulanam - uprooting; muda happily. Uncivilized mlecchas and yavanas will become kings. They will mock the true religion and gleefully uproot the good reputations of the saintly devotees.

Text 50 pit-deva-dvijatna atithna ca nityaa puja nasti guruna ca pitro ca pujana striya pit - of the pits; deva - demigods; dvijat nam - and brhmanas;a atith nam - guests; ca - and; nitya a - always; puja - worship; na - not; asti - is; guruam - of gurus; ca and; pitro - of parents; ca - and; pujanam - worship; striya - of the wife. No one will worship pits, demigods, brhmaas, guests, gurus, or parents. Instead they will worship their wives.

Text 51 str-bandhuna gaurava ca stra ca satata pita cora sat-kula-jati ca brahmano deva-haraka str -bandhunam - of the relatuives of the wife; gauravam - respect; ca - and; str am of the wives; ca - and; satatam - always; pita - O father; cora - thieves; sat-kulajati - born in a good family; ca - and; brahmaa - a brahmana; deva-haraka stealing the Lord's property. O father, men will give all honor to their wives and their wives' relatives. Brhmaas born in good families will become thieves, stealing even from the Deities in the temples.

Text 52 dhana vahanti lobhena yuge dharmena kautukat devayatana-hna ca jagat sarva bhayakulam dhanam - honor; vahanti - carry; lobhena - with greed; yuge - in the yuga; dharmena with religion; kautukat - eagerly; devayatana - temples; h nam - without; ca - and; jagat - the universe; sarvam - all; bhayakulam - frightful.

It is the nature of this yuga that people will become thieves, greedily stealing the wealth of others. Bereft of temples, the world will become a frightening place.

Text 53 arajaka ca durnta santata kali-doata bubhukita kucaila ca daridra vyadhino nara arajakam - without a king; ca - and; durn tam - misled; santatam - always; kalido ata - by the fault of Kali; bubhuk ita - beggars; kucaila - dressed in rags; ca and; daridra - poor; vyadhina - diseased; nara - the people. Bereft of a good king, the world will suffer in misrule. By the fault of Kali-yuga the people will become diseased, poverty- stricken beggars dressed in rags.

Text 54 kapardaka-ghaadhyako rajendro hi ghaevara vddhaguha-sama loka vka aka-samas tatha kapardaka - seashells; gha a - and pots; adhyak a - master; rajendra - a great king; hi - indeed; gha e vara - the master of pots; v ddha ha-sama - the size of a gu thumb; loka - people; v k a - trees; aka-sama - the size of vegetables; tatha - so. Kings will have only a few pots and seashells in their treasuries. They will be kings of pots. Men will be the size of thumbs. Trees will be the size of vegetables.

Text 55 talana narikelana panasana tathaiva ca phalani sarapany eva tat kudra ca tata param

talanam - of palm trees; narikelanam - of coconuts; panasanam - of panasas; tatha - so; eva - inded; ca - and; phalani - fruits; sar apani - mustard seeds; eva - indeed; tat that; k udram - small; ca - and; tata - than that; param - more. The fruits of tla, panasa, and coconut trees will be the size of mustard seeds. In time they will become smaller still.

Text 56 jala-bhajana-patrena asyena vasasa tatha vihna mandira sarva ghanam apariktam jala-bhajana-patrea - water, cups, and dishes; asyena - grains; vasasa - clothing; tatha - so; vih nam - without; mandiram - house; sarvam - all; g hanam - of houses; apari k tam - undecorated. Homes will have no water, cups, plates, grains, cloth, or decorations.

Text 57 gandhakena parivta dpa-hna tamo-yutam hisra-jantu-bhayad bhta jana sarve ca papina gandhakena - with smell; pariv tam - filled; d pa-h nam - without lamps; tamo-yutam dark; hi sra-jantu - of violent beings; bhayat - from fear; bh ta - afraid; jana - the people; sarve - all; ca - and; papina - sinners. Homes will be dark, lampless, and filled with bad smells. Everyone will be a sinner afraid of violent beings.

Text 58 sarve ca phala-lobhiha pucalya kalaha-priya rupavatyo na kaminyo nara capi na rupina

sarve - all; ca - and; phala-lobhi ha - greedy for results; pu calya - unchaste women; kalaha-priya - fond of quarrel; rupavatya - beautiful; na - not; kaminya desirable; nara - men; ca - and; api - also; na - not; rupia - handsome. Everyone will be greedy. Women will not be beautiful or desirable. They will love to quarrel. Men will not be handsome.

Text 59 nadyo nada kandara ca taaga ca sarovara jala-padma-vihna ca jala-hna ghanas tatha nadya - rivers; nada - oceans; kandara - caves; ca - and; taaga - ponds; ca - and; sarovara - lakes; jala - water; padma - lotus; vih nas-without; ca - and; jala-h na without water; ghana - clouds; tatha - so. Rivers, oceans, caves, ponds, and lakes will have neither water nor lotus flowers. Clouds will not carry water.

Text 60 apatya-hna narya ca kamukyo jara-samyuta avattha-cchedina sarve vka-hna vasundhara apatya-h na - without children; narya - women; ca - and; kamukya - lusty; jarasamyuta - with paramours; a vattha - banyan trees; cchedina - cutting; sarve - all; v k a-h na - without trees; vasundhara - the earth. Women will be very lusty and stay always with their paramours. Still, they will bear no children. All the banyan trees will be cut down. The earth will be treeless.

Text 61 phala-hna ca tarava akha-skandha-vihnaka phalani svadu-hnani cannani ca jalani ca phala-h na - without fruits; ca - and; tarava - the trees; akha-skandha-vih naka without trunks or branches; phalani - fruits; svadu-h nani - without sweetness; ca and; annani - grains; ca - and; jalani - water; ca - and. Trees will not have fruits, branches, or trunks. Grains, fruits, and water will not taste good.

Texts 62 and 63 manava kau-vakaro nirdaya dharma-varjita tad-ante dvadaaditya sahariyanti manavan sarvan jantu ca tapena bahu-vya vrajevara avaiha ca pthiv katha-matravaeita manava - humans; ka u-vak ara - speaking harshly; nirdaya - merciless; dharmavarjita - without religion; tad-ante - at the end; dvada aditya - twelve suns; sa hari yanti - will remove; manavan - humans; sarvan - all; jantu - creatures; ca and; tapena - with heat; bahu-v ya - with torrential rains; vraje vara - O king of Vraja; ava i ha - remaining; ca - and; p thiv - the earth; katha- matrava e ita remaining in name only. All human beings will be merciless, harshly-speaking atheists. At the end of Kaliyuga, twelve suns shining together and bringing great heat followed by torrential rain, will destroy the human race and all other creatures as well. O king of Vraja, the earth will exist in name alone.

Text 64 kalau gate ca pthiv ketra vara-gate tatha puna satya-pravtti ca bhaviyati kramena vai kalau - when Kali-yuga; gate - is gone; ca - and; p thiv - the earth; k etram - the place; var a - the rains; gate - gone; tatha - so; puna - again; satya- prav tti - the beginning of Satya-yuga; ca - and; bhavi yati - will be; kramea - in course; vai - indeed. When Kali-yuga ends the earth will be restored. When the rains end Satya-yuga will begin again.

Text 65 ity eva kathita sarva gaccha tata vraja sukham aha dugdha-mukho bala putras te kathayami kim iti - thus; evam - thus; kathitam - told; sarvam - all; gaccha - please go; tata - O father; vrajam - to Vraja; sukham - happily; aham - I; dugdha-mukha - drinking milk; bala - child; putra - son; te - of you; kathayami - I speak; kim - why? Thus I have told you everything. O father, please happily return to Vraja. I am your son. When I was a child I drank the milk you gave to me. What more can I say?

navan tam - butter; g htam - ghee; dugdham - milk; dadhi - yogurt; takram buttermilk; pari k tam - nicely prepared; svastikam - svastika candies; ubha-karma auspicious deeds; arham - worthy; mi annam - delicious foods; ca - and; sudhopamam - like nectar; mi a- dravyam - candies; ca - and; yat - what; ki cit something; pit - deva-nimittakam - suitable for the pits and demigods; bhuktam ejoyed; balac - forgcibly; ca - and; tat - that; sarvam - all; balanam - of children; rodanam - crying; balam - the strength. I enjoyed butter, ghee, milk, yogurt, buttermilk, svastika candy, auspicious foods delicious like nectar, candies, and many other things fit for the demigods and pits. By crying I obtained all these things from you, for crying is the weapon of small children.
