STAGE 1:CLOSE THE RIGHT NOSTRIL WITH THE THUMB. INHALE DEEPLY THROUGH YOUR
LEFT NOSTRIL WHILE CHANTING OM ONCE, VERY SLOWLY. THIS IS CALLED POORAKA-
FILLING AIR TO LUNGS, THROUGH INHALATION.
CLOSE BOTH NOSTRILS AND HOLD BREATH AND CHANT OM MENTALLY ONCE. THIS IS
CALLED KUMBHAKA.
NOW, EXHALE THROUGH THE RIGHT NOSTRIL SLOWLY WHILE CHANTING OM ONCE. THIS IS
CALLED RECHAKA.
STAGE 2: CLOSE YOUR LEFT NOSTRIL WITH YOUR THUMB. INHALE DEEPLY THROUGH THE
RIGHT NOSTRIL, CHANTING OM MENTALLY, VERY SLOWLY. CLOSE BOTH NOSTRILS AND CHANT
OM SLOWLY. NOW EHHALE THROUGH LEFT NOSTRIL SLOWLY, WHILE CHANTING OM
MENTALLY.
AS YOU PROGRESS, CHANT OM ONCE FOR POORAKA AND RECHAKA AND THREE TIMES FOR
KUMBHAKA (THAT IS, WHILE HOLDING BREATH).
NOTE: IF HOLDING BREATH CAUSES ANY PROBLEMS, SIMPLY INHALE AND EXHALE SLOWLY
WHILE MENTALLY CHANTING OM, AND DON’T HOLD YOUR BREATH.
THIS PROCESS OF BREATH CONTROL IS A GREAT METHOD TO CALM YOUR MIND. IT
PREPARES US FOR MEDITATION, STUDIES ETC. IF YOU HAVE ANY HEART PROBLEMS,
CONSULT YOUR DOCTOR BEFORE DOING PRAANAAYAM.
OM TAT That eternal god, That God, which was eulogized extensively in the Vedas (the
infinite intelligent Being who is the cause of the Universe)
SAVITUH Of the creator and protector (also of the Sun)
VARENYAM Most worthy of praise, reverence, and worship
BHARGO The light (of the Creator); Consciousness; Knowledge (also the light of the orb of the
Sun)
DEVASYA Of the self-effulgent one (also of the Deity, Sun)
DHEEMAHI We meditate
We meditate upon the Spiritual effulgence of that venerable Supreme Divine Spirit, who
creates and sustains everything in the Universe (the three phenomenal world planes – the gross,
the subtle, and the potential). May that Supreme Divine Being stimulate our intellect and
energize our consciousness.
Note: The Sun Deity is a symbol of the Supreme Divine Spirit when the meaning “Sun” is assigned to
Savituh.
Gayathri Mantra is considered the best and the most important prayer since it is not directed to obtain any
material possessions but to inspire us to pursue the pure life- pure in thought, word and deed.
SUMUKHASHCHA EKADANTHASCHA
KAPILO GAJAKARNAKAH

SANGRAAME SARVA KAARYESHU VIGHNAH TASYA NA JAYATHE
Meaning:
Oh Lord Ganesh, who has a pleasant face, the face of an elephant, one who is worshipped in
several names, we bow down to you who removes obstacles from all activities-whether we are
commencing our studies, or getting married, or commencing a task or completing a task, or
engaged in a war (against evil).
SHUKLAAMBARADHARAM VISHNUM
SHASHIVARNAM CHATURBHUJAM
Meaning:
Oh Lord, You are clad in white( purity), have four arms( valor), are pleasant faced; we meditate
on you to remove all obstacles.
OMKAR FOUNDATION Prayer Book
ESSENCE OF POOJA: The Lord is the most honored guest. We offer him a nice seat, praise
him; we offer soft drinks, sweets, fruits, flowers, we ask him to take bath and offer nice clothes;
we sing in praise of Him; we offer him a nice rich meal; we provide him a nice comfortable
facility to sleep. We request him to bless us and fulfill all our wishes. At the end, we offer arathy
which is another request to bless every one. The light of the arathy represents knowledge, which
drives out darkness or ignorance. Whatever is offered to Him is shared with others as Prasad, a
symbol of sharing and caring . When you offer every thing to God, you feel that every thing that
you receive comes from God. You feel that God is great and we all should surrender to Him
without whose will, nothing can happen. All the steps in Pooja such as Invocation,
Shodashopachara, offering various things are summarized in the following procedures:
MEANING:
We worship you, Ganapathi, the Lord of the Gods, who is the wisest among those of
incomparable wisdom. Of all the knowers of the Vedas, you are the greatest.
Having listened to our praises, come with your protective powers, and be seated in your seat
here. Salutations to the Great Lord of the greatest assembly ( i.e., the Universe).
In this location, I invoke the Great Ganapathi, install him, and worship him.
Meaning: It is well-known that you, the deities of water, are the cause of great happiness.
Please nourish us with the divine vision which brings glory and happiness. Please make us
worthy of imbibing the auspicious bliss. We approach you with eagerness for that bliss to
distribute which, you have taken a form even as a mother feeds the children, and are shining.
Bestow on us the boon of life sanctified by knowledge.
After dhoopa and Deepa, you can put some flowers on god.
SATYANTAVARTHENA PARISINCHAYAMI
AMRTHAMASTU AMRTHOPASTHARANAMASI SVAHA
The above mantra is used to sprinkle water on all the food articles you are offering to God
CHANT:
OM PRAANAYA SVAHA
OM APAANAYA SVAHA
OM VYANAYA SVAHA
OM UDAANAAYA SVAHA
OM SAMAANAAYA SVAAHA
OM BRAMHANE SVAHA
OMKAR FOUNDATION Prayer Book
CHANT:
Meaning: Lord is offered food. While He is eating food, you offer water now and then .
After he finishes eating, you offer him water to wash His hands and feet. You give him betal
leaves, which is an Indian custom to offer to guests after lunch.
Offering lighted camphor is symbolic like many other procedures. Camphor burns completely
leaving nothing in the plate. We are praying to god to sublimate/destroy all our ego completely,
and purify us.
CHANT:
The source of this mantra is not clear. Essentially, what it means is: The lord makes our life full; he
blesses us with longevity and intellectual brilliance. Any noble act we do will take us to Him.
PRADAKSHINA NAMASKAARAM:
This is a procedure whereby all devotees go round either the temple or around themselves
clockwise about three times and bow down to God, lying down on the floor, with both arms
stretched towards God’s idol, and both legs stretched down. This is the posture of complete
surrender to the Lord. The procedure of going round the temple symbolizes that God is at the
center of every thing and we are all drawn towards the center.

PUNAH POOJA (THE FINAL POOJA ASKING GOD’S FORGIVENESS FOR MISTAKES
DONE, IF ANY, DURING POOJA)
After the Pooja and offering are over, we pray to God as follows:
Oh Lord, during the Pooja, meditation, or recital of mantras or other acts, I might have made
mistakes. Please pardon me. Please be pleased. I will recite your name three times and seek your
pardon and blessings (as per below):

ITHI SHREE KRISHNAARPANAMASTHU
OM MEDITATION
We meditate upon the glorious splendor of the Divine, the supreme spirit.
May He inspire us; may He illumine our minds.
(Rgveda 3.62.10)
Gayatri is the embodiment of all forms of Godhead- "Sarva Devatha Swaroopam." Gayatri does
not belong to any caste, to any sect or to any religion as such. It is universal in its scope, since it
is the supreme spirit.
PLEASE REFER TO THE DETAILED MAEANING OF GAYATHRI MANTRA , PROVIDED IN THE
PREVIOUS SECTION.
Gayatri has nine important attributes. These are:
1. Aum : Sound as the basis of Creation, Brahman
2. Bhuh : The Earth, the gross.
3. Bhuvah : The Atmosphere, the Ether, the Subtle.
4. Suvah : Heaven, the region beyond Bhuvah, the Causal.
5. Tat : Stands for That. The Ultimate Reality is simply referred to as Tat because it
defies description through speech or language.
6. Savituh : Stands for the Divine Spirit (also the SUN), equated with the vivifying
power contained within the Sun.
7. Varenyum: Adorable
8. Bhargo : Radiance, Lustre, Illumination
9. Devasya : Divine Radiance or Grace.
"Dheemahi" signifies worship of or meditation on the Lord. "Dhiyo Yo Nah Prachodayat" as the
last syllable, is a prayer. Therefore, in the Gayatri, there is Varnam, Dhyanam and Praarthana
(description, meditation and a prayer) - these aspects converge in the Mantra. Also note that
originally, Gayathri mantra was also known as Savithri mantra, and was taught by Sage
Vishvamitra. The meter of this mantra was set in Gayathri. Meter is known as Chandas.

SILENT MEDITATION
THE OM MEDITATION AND GAYATHRI MEDITATION SHOULD HAVE HELPED US
TO CALM OUR MINDS BY NOW. YOU CAN ALSO DO BOTH OM AND GAYATHRI
MEDITATION SILENTLY. HOWEVER, WE HAVE USED THEM HERE FOR GROUP
MEDITATION BY CHANTING OM AND GAYATHRI IN A GROUP. WE NOW SIT IN A
RELAXED POSITION, PREFERABLY KEEPING THE BACK STRAIGHT, AND QUIETLY
REPEAT A CHOSEN MANTRA, MENTALLY. THIS MANTRA CAN BE ANY THING
SUCH AS OM, OM NAMASHIVAAYA, OM NAMO NARAYANAYA… ETC. REPITITION
OF THE CHOSEN MANTRA WILL HELP OUR MIND TO FOCUS ON GOD. IF MIND
STARTS THINKING ABOUT VARIOUS THINGS, DON’T FIGHT IT BUT KEEP
REPEATING THE CHOSEN MANTRA AND YOUR MIND WILL BE BROUGHT BACK TO
FOCUS ON GOD. THE LONGER THE DURATION OF MEDITATION, THE EASIER IT
BECOMES TO FOCUS ON GOD. DO NOT CONCENTRATE ON ANY THING OR ANY
PART OF THE BODY- RELAX. SO PRACTICE MEDITATION, SITTING IN A QUIET
PLACE, SITTING ON A CHAIR, COUCH OR FLOOR. KEEP YOUR STOMACH LIGHT SO
THAT YOU ARE COMFORTABLE. DON’T LIE DOWN SINCE YOU MAY FALL ASLEEP
EASILY.
FOR YOUR CONVENIENCE, WE SUGGEST THAT YOU ALL CHOOSE OM AS THE
MANTRA TO MEDITATE. REPEAT OM MENTALLY, VERY SLOWLY AND TRY TO
FEEL THAT THE LORD IS SAT CHIT ANANDA, EXISTENCE, CONSCIOUSNESS AND
BLISS. FEEL HAPPY; FEEL THAT THERE IS DIVINE LIGHT EVERYWHERE, AND
RELAX.
