0bjective: Stuuents will be able to unueistanu the concepts on longituue anu
latituue. Stuuents will be able to finu locations on a map using only the longituue
anu latituue of those locations. This lesson plan is baseu on the Pennsylvania State
Stanuaiu, which iequiies that:
Basic Geographic Literacy: Stuuents be able to uesciibe anu locate places anu
iegions. Cooiuinate systems (e.g., latituue anu longituue, time zones)

Biiect Instiuction: I will begin the lesson with a shoit PoweiPoint piesentation
explaining longituue anu latituue conceptually. The PoweiPoint goes ovei each anu
explains how to use both the longituue anu latituue to finu a specific location. I will
then use chait papei to fuithei explain the concept, as well as how the uegiees of
latituue aie ueteimineu. I will ask stuuents to help explain the iueas of longituue
anu latituue baseu on the PoweiPoint as well as the equatoi anu meiiuians. I will
uiscuss why latituue is baseu on 9 uegiees, but longituue is baseu on 8 uegiees.

http:www.supeiteacheiwoiksheets.com). The woiksheet has a map of the
0niteu States along with the ielevant longituue anu latituue lines. Stuuents will be
pioviueu with seven locations (via theii longituue anu latituue) anu askeu to fill in
the city that matches that location.

Assessment: Stuuents will be pioviueu with an exit slip. The exit slip will ieau:

What is the uegiee line of longituue calleu.
In which quauiant (NE, NW, SE, SW) woulu you finu the 0niteu States.

Rationale: Stuuents in Pennsylvania (anu the 0.S.) aie not given an oppoitunity, uue
to the cuiient testing enviionment, to leain enough about geogiaphy anu the
concepts of latituue anu longituue. This lesson is uesigneu to help iectify that gap. I
am planning this lesson in the hopes that stuuents will unueistanu both longituue
anu latituue, as well as why they aie impoitant (they can help you finu a veiy
specific location). This lesson also coiiesponus with Pennsylvania State Stanuaius.
