Ub|ective: Stuuents will be able to unueistanu the concepts on longituue anu
latituue. Stuuents will be able to finu locations on a map using only the longituue
anu latituue of those locations. This lesson plan is baseu on the Pennsylvania State
Stanuaiu, which iequiies that:
.. Basic Geographic Literacy: Stuuents be able to uesciibe anu locate places anu
iegions. Cooiuinate systems (e.g., latituue anu longituue, time zones)

esson Plan {For tbe follow up lesson]: Stuuents will be ieminueu of a pievious
lesson on longituue anu latituue. The teachei will go ovei the pievious lesson's
most peitinent info, such as the uefinitions of longituue anu latituue, as well as how
to finu keys places on a map using longituue anu latituue.
The teachei will go ovei how to finu ceitain places in Noith Ameiica by using the
longituue anu latituue of those places as a piequel to the guiueu piactice.

Direct Instruction: I will begin the lesson with a shoit PoweiPoint piesentation,
which ieviews longituue anu latituue conceptually. The teachei will have copies of a
map of South Ameiica fiom the stuuents' homewoik packet that will have auuitional
places maikeu on the hanuout with a stai. The teachei will pioviue a woiksheet
that will have the name of the place that is staiieu, as well as the longituue anu
latituue of those places. The teachei will have an oveiheau of the same woiksheet,
anu will guiue the stuuents with how to finu the places on the map.

The stuuents will then woik in gioups to ueteimine the iest of the locations on the
map anu will label them accoiuingly.

CuidedJIndependent Practice: The stuuents will then woik in gioups to
ueteimine the iest of the locations on the map anu will label them accoiuingly.
Stuuents will woik inuepenuently, oi with theii gioup, whichevei is theie
piefeience.

Conclusion: The teachei will then biing the stuuents back into a gioup anu will go
ovei the answeis. The teachei will take a volunteei foi each answei, anu will ask
the stuuent to explain how they aiiiveu at that answei. Incoiiect answeis will be
questioneu in oiuei to piompt the stuuent to iealize theii mistake without
uiscouiaging the stuuent. The teachei will call on at least one stuuent pei table
gioup.

Assessment: Theie will be no foimal assessment foi this in teims of a giaueu
piouuct, but the stuuents' woik will be collecteu anu mistakes will be noteu to see if
theie aie patteins with pioblems that may have been moie oi less uifficult foi some
ieason. The teachei will use the stuuent woik to ueteimine if any ie-teaching is
necessaiy, anu as an evaluation of the lesson on the pait of the teachei.

ationale: (Rationale iemains the same because this is a follow up lesson.)
Stuuents in Pennsylvania (anu the 0.S.) aie not given an oppoitunity, uue to the
cuiient testing enviionment, to leain enough about geogiaphy anu the concepts of
latituue anu longituue. This lesson is uesigneu to help iectify that gap. I am
planning this lesson in the hopes that stuuents will unueistanu both longituue anu
latituue, as well as why they aie impoitant (they can help you finu a veiy specific
location). This lesson also coiiesponus with Pennsylvania State Stanuaius.
