INTRODUCTION
The objective of this project is to analyze and understand the comings and goings of the
stock market. To buy a stock it is necessary to evaluate the companies and the industries they
operate in. For that you have to research and understand how the market operates.
For starters the first advice of an expert is to diversify, this way the chances of losing
money are slimmer. That is one of the reasons I have chosen such a variety of stocks. I based my
research in a question Where to invest in 2011? I read eight articles about the subject and
through them I got hold of 77 companies. To downsize this number I eliminated every company
I felt uncomfortable owning like banks (too risky) and some in the gun and tobacco industry (for
personal reasons).
With the resulting stocks I decided to evaluate which of those industries had more
advantage then the others and which of those companies seemed more prosperous. So, I started
reading articles about possible mergers, releases of new products and visiting the companies
web site to understand how they operate. That study helped me to reach the final 10 companies.

ABBOTT LABORATORIES (ABT)

Abbott Park, Illinois 60064-3500
Miles D. White, CEO
This $74 billion multinational company manufactures and sells a wide array of
pharmaceuticals and medical devices. The article Where to Invest in 2011 written by Reshma
Kapadia and Russell Pearlman states the Abbot Laboratories is a company with a strong brand
and unique products which means they can increase their prices without hurting sales.
As stated in the article, Abbott shares trade at a price/earnings ratio of around 10, based
on projected profits in the beginning of this year. The firm's pharmaceutical division relished in a
23% growth in the third quarter, thanks in part to the strength of brand-name drugs. This led me
to believe they are going to continue to grow in the rest of the year, as they also had an increase
from 3.6% to 3.8% of the amount paid by their dividends. And as 40% of Abbott's revenue
comes from non-pharmaceutical businesses I have the security that any trouble in the sector will
not result in a huge loss.
AMAZON (AMZN)

Jeffrey P. Bezos, CEO
Considered one of the biggest four companies in the world of tech, Amazon is a true
leader of its category. The company also has a capitalization of $97.58 billion and a priceearnings ratio of 94.83. It recently launched the Kindle Fire, which according to Patrick Martin
in his article The iPad's Surprising Competition has reportedly already up more than 250,000
preorders.
If consumer continues spending, it could be good opportunity for all retailers, especially
in holiday seasons. In one of his article, Matt Koppenheffer wrote about the surprising U.S. sales
double of the estimation this year. Which led me believe the chances of Amazon having a chance
of growth are greater than other retailers, as they have an extensively diversity of merchandise
and provide consumers a chance to shop in the comfort of their homes.

Ian M. Cook, CEO
Colgate-Palmolive is part of what it is called a defensive sector, which is a type of a
company that manufactures everyday household goods. In an interview for the article Top
stocks in a crummy market John Norris, managing director with Oakworth Capital Bank in
Birmingham, said "You want to be in defensive sectors because the economy is not that hot, and
the truth is that valuations are not that scary".
Colgate-Palmolive is well situated to take advantage of economic growth where ever it
may occur anywhere on the globe. The company has a profit margin of 15% and its return on
equity is 82 percent. It is also in the best place to maintain its domestic market share while
increasing market share abroad, it derives 75 percent of its revenue from outside the US.
I chose this company as safe guard of any risk I might have with the other companies,
because of its tendency to have stable earnings, revenue growth and solid dividends which have
been growing in the last consecutive years.

Intel, a large-cap microchip maker with a market capitalization of $111.43 billion
currently carries a $2.35 billion in total debt but it also shows $11.55 billion in total cash. In the
beginning of October purchased Telmap, an Israeli mobile navigation software designer. It is
also investing into Xfire, a social service for gamers that claims to have more than 19 million
users. Intel is expecting revenue to reach $33 million for 2011 and show a profit for the second
year in a row.
This is one of the 61 companies that were up during the months of August and September
according to the article Top stocks in a crummy market. Despite its high risk, I appreciate
Intels need to search and develop new products and trends. Besides that, Intels low priceearnings and attractive dividends make it a good investment.

Robert A. Niblock, CEO
With the high trading estimations and its 2% dividend yield, Lowes seems to be a
reliable company to invest into. It is also my believe that as people stay in their homes the more
likely is they will start fixing it which will increase sales for home-improvement retailers. With a
60 years history of helping customers improve their homes, Lowes has a huge advantage to be
the place people go.
During the recession, Lowe's tried to limit the loss. It opted to invest in its existing
locations instead of new stores, it also re-launched its Web site and it is trying to find ways to
schedule employees more efficiently. The actions seem to be working, according to
SMARTMONEY MAGAZINE article, while its profits faltered, Mooresville, N.C. based Lowe's
boosted market share every quarter during the downturn. Their analysts say the company can
continue to increase market share and its cash flow as the economy improves.

Robert A. Eckert, CEO
Mattel it is a designer, manufacturer, and marketer of a variety of toy products
worldwide. Although its revenue growth has not outpaced the industry average, its growth in net
income has. The company has grown its sales and net income during the past quarter when
compared with the same quarter in 2010.
The toy company shows strong liquidity, which has increased from the same period last
year. This indicates the company is unlikely to face financial difficulties in the near future with
its ability to cover short-term cash needs. As Jack Hough stated in his article 10 cheap stocks
with dependable earnings a company, like Mattel, with relatively smooth earnings histories -a
low standard deviation of quarterly earnings, in statistical terminology - is most likely than
others to deliver the same in coming quarters.

Indra K. Nooyi, CEO
PepsiCo has products that keep selling regardless of economic conditions. It is expanding
its business in emerging markets like China, which the firm expects to be the single largest
beverage market by 2015. In the first semester of 2010 the firm's profits were $4.9 billion, up
10% from the same time frame a year earlier. That solid growth, combined with the stock's cheap
valuation 14 times this year's expected earnings makes it an attractive investment.
According to Reshma Kapadia and Russell Pearlmanthe the multinational company
bought back its own stock, more than $4 billion worth of its shares in 2010. The repurchases,
combined with a dividend climb, have helped push PepsiCo's dividend yield to nearly 3 percent.
Acquiring these stocks is like having a safe net for any investment portfolio.

William H. Swanson, CEO
Raytheon, a technology and innovation company specialized in defensive homeland
security and other government markets throughout the world. A good reason to invest in this
company it is his current dividend of $1.72 per share, or a yield of 4.40%. Last year, Raytheon
paid out $536 million in dividends, which might sound like an enormous amount, but it is well
covered by the approximately $4.32 per share in free cash flow it generated last year.
According to the Chartered Financial Analyst, Ryan C. Fuhrmann, forecasters, for this
year, currently project sales growth of a couple of percent, total sales of almost $26 billion, and
earnings of $5 per share, which again would represent each years growth of only a couple of
percent. Raytheon's forward earnings multiple is extremely reasonable at 8.3, as is the trailing
free cash flow multiple of 9.5.

Howard Schultz, CEO
Dominating company in its niche market, Starbucks can afford to raise prices as people
are willing to pay for them. It benefited from first-mover advantage in the coffee-selling business, which enabled it to build the best coffee-store brand in the United States. Starbucks is the
Americans largest coffee-shop operator with about 10,900. Now the company is looking to start
its operation internationally, in 2010, international sales represented just 21% of Starbucks' net
revenues.
According to Alyce Lomax, the company has plenty of environmental strategies, too. It is
been testing cup recycling and is on track to meet its goal to provide comprehensive recycling
solutions for its paper and plastic cups by 2012. In December 2010, it finished the initial phase
for the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED Volume Certification program. Although it is a
high risk company to invest, I am confident in Starbucks profitability.

($20,972.90) and a tremendous loss on November 23 ($ -7,603.65). Funnily enough both have
the same source; the European stock market.
On November 11, after a package of severity actions cleared the problems in Italy and as
Greece moved closer to completing a national unity government, stocks surged in the United
States and in Europe, stated Christine Hauser in THE NEW YORK TIMES. Although, analyst
expectations to the end of the crisis where not very high. Ten days later, they discover how truth
they were; European debt crisis claimed Spain making it the fifth government to fall under the
cloud of bankruptcy.
Adding to that, the United States bipartisan Super Committee had failed at finding $1.2
trillion of spending cuts. "Failure will result in automatic cuts across the U.S. government and
leave a host of unresolved year-end issues. For the markets, this will only cause further
uncertainty in an already fickle environment," added Inspector General to THE WALL STREET
JOURNAL article GLOBAL MARKETS: European Stock Markets Expected to Open Lower.
After analyzing this project I came to the following conclusion: When there is a threat in
the stock market, in this case the European crisis, it does not matter if your portfolio is diverse,
all the companies will be affected by it. So, the most correct decision would be to keep the stocks
in the market for a longer period of time and hope the crisis averts, an option not given by the
project.
