are we looking for:


#1 the ideas, characters and themes constructed by the author This basically assesses your overall knowledge and understanding of the text as relevant to the essay topic. Do you make correct statements/observations of the characters/themes/ideas. #2 structures features and conventions used to construct meaning *knowledge of how writer has deliberately structured their text And / or *knowledge of how the writer has used literary techniques to convey particular messages/meanings to understand characters/thems/ideas #3 the way the author expresses or implies views and values *mainly shown in knowledge of themes and their messages *broadening what is learnt about human conditions through the authors characters/themes etc. #4 how interpretations of a text can differ This criteria asks that you acknowledge that there are different ways to see and interpret the text, and that your view point is not the only possible one. You can recognise this in a number of ways; *Use open language eg. this suggests..., this infers..., this implies ..., this highlights..., this raises the possibility of..., this leads to question..., it can be argued..., hints that..., can be seen to..., it could be assumed that..., it could be regarded that..., it can be *Acknowledge where debate exists: While the reader cannot be certain that Micheles reactions to the kidnapping are simply that of a frightened boy as opposed to a nine year old with a highly developed sense of morality it is clear that... #5 strategies for constructing and supporting an interpretation including appropriate metalanguage *using quotes as evidence

*using the language of literary techniques *using knowledge of context to support/explain arguments #6 observe the conventions of standard Australian English. *paragraphing clear and correct (indent from margin) *correct spelling *correct homophones *correct grammar (there is no such things are more worse!!!) *all words written in full (no contractions) * correct use of apostrophes for possession *correct use of capital letters for proper nouns *correct use of sentence punctuation including full stops at end of sentences *written in present tense *written in third person (no I, we, you, us etc)
