A Sanctuary of Peace

On September 30, 2001, a cornerstone was laid and blessed on a spot in the Loyola Heights that would later on be known as the Church of Ges. Designed by Jose Pedro Recio and Carmelo Casas, the church is situated on Sacred Heart Hill, overlooking the Bellarmine Field and is believed to be the highest point in the Loyola Heights, symbolizing its influence among Ateneans and overlooking the school as if a guard ready at all times. As a landmark, it serves not only its physical purpose as a place for spiritual engagements like mass and alike but as a sanctuary for those who needs spiritual guidance and to be emotionally uplifted. Everyone is welcome, as depicts by the statue of Jesus at the front with welcoming, outstretched arms.

Its shape and design also suggest that of a traditional Bahay Kubo, a place of refuge for us Filipinos and giving us the strength of who we really are and to be proud of our culture. Also the crucifix inside depicts Jesus looking upwards, which is something unusual as contrary to many crucifixes that have Jesus bowing his head. Another fact is the churchs holy water stoup. It is made in a hole in the floor and the water flows through the sides; therefore the water is not stagnant and does not contain any debris, unlike most water stoups.

As most churches serve their purpose, Church of Ges is something unique and to be proud of. It serves as the foundation of every Ateneans and their source of virtues and principles. At the base of the statue of Jesus is an inscription from Matthew 11:28: "Come to me all of you who are burdened, and I will refresh you. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and gentle of heart,

thus you will find refreshment for your souls. My yoke is sweet and my burden light." May this church be refreshment to our souls, a guide throughout our life.
