Encourage slower/deeper respirations, use of pursed lip technique. Maintain calm attitude while dealing with client to limit anxiety level. Discuss relationship of smoking to respiratory function and encourage client to develop a plan for smoking cessation. - After 4 hours of nursing intervention the client establish a normal/effective respiratory pattern as evidenced by diminished cough and colds.
