XII UNIVERSEUM NETWORK MEETING ` 26-29 May 2011 University of Padua, Italy

One of the top schools of technology in Portugal, ISEP has been pioneering education and research in Engineering since 1852. Our goal is to contribute to the achievement of sustainable development, by creating and transmitting applied knowledge. As future engineers, we believe our students can produce creative solutions for present or upcoming challenges, becoming agents of global progress.

It is located in the main town of Porto (North Portugal) and houses old scientific collections comparable to those of the universities of Porto, Coimbra and Lisbon.

The Museum of the Scholl of Engineering (ISEP) of Polytecnic was founded in 1998, with the aim to protect, conserve and disseminate the heritage of the School.

The museum houses a diverse collection of almost ten thousand objects, drawings, prints and photographs. About six thousand are already properly inventoried.

Objects - 2740 drawings and prints - 2948

The majority of the objects belonged to old cabinets and laboratories that used to purchase annually new material for practical classes.

They exemplify almost all areas of engineering taught in ISEP and are being properly researched and organized. Till the creation of the museum, the objects were housed in different departments of the School.

Then, they have been gradually incorporated in the museum with great involvement of the community that wishes to have their heritage displayed at the school museum.

From an outreach point of view, the importance and meaning of these collections, both at national and international levels have been already revealed by several scientific studies.

In a near future the museum will be focused on the integration of a large collection of Mineralogy, Geology and Paleontology that still remains in use for educational purposes and still keeps its importance for practical training of students.

Some specimens and labels

As we can see from contemporaneous documentation, teachers had a very good knowledge of what was produced in educational material, indicating in their purchasing orders the exact references to the suppliers.

The Museum of ISEP, aims to be the simultaneously institution's memory and an innovative space that actively takes part in the implementation of various projects within different subjects currently taught in school.
