Canada has an unquenchable thirst for one beverage and its not beer. Its coffee, according to Tim Hortons, which is introducing a new extra large coffee cup size starting next Monday. The new 24-oz. (710-ml) cup is nearly halfway between starbucks venti (20 oz. or 591 ml) and its recently introduced trenta (31 oz. or 917 ml), which is currently still available in the u.s. only. Customers might cheer the added caffeine kick, but one health expert says up-sizing is going in the wrong direction for a couple of reasons. so instead of a doubledouble, its gonna be a triple-triple, said Ian Janssen, a Queens university professor who specializes in obesity. While black coffee has a negligible amount of calories, he said, its the cream (29 calories per tablespoon) and sugar (45 calories per tablespoon) and other additives that stack up. even more so for the specialty coffees, with their caramel, chocolate and flavoured syrups.

Health Canada recommends no more than 400 mg of caffeine per day for healthy adults the equivalent of three 237-ml cups of java, or one new Timmies extra large. The maximum for women of childbearing age is 300 mg, and even less for pregnant women. at that level, the general population of healthy adults is not at risk for potential adverse effects from caffeine, Health Canada says, adding the reminder that we also consume caffeine in chocolate, tea, soda and energy drinks. Janssen agrees that caffeine can have some beneficial health effects, including reducing the risk for Type 2 diabetes and, to a small extent, of alzheimers disease and dementia. But he says it can also increase the risk of bladder cancer, ulcers and other gastrointestinal issues, besides affecting sleep and anxiety levels.
