From the meadow of night Stars are peeping unto a temple ground. And a solitary earthen oil lamp Struggles thro' her last phase. A distant bark, a singular footstep, The sudden cry of a birdAll the lamps are gone in the wind And this delta of light Vainly torches the night. The shadow falls conically below her, It dances in the wind. Her bright yellow fades into point red And she is in a palmy battle with the wind. In a moment she returns to life, The wind hath left for the distant dales. For the benefit of one and two passersby It has given her a lease of life. There- she lights the way dimly And burns a better life than the distant stars. Then- into the silence of night She returns having met the purpose of life. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
