Notes: Values may be incorrect due to problems described in the conclusion. 5) In my data the crayon had a density of 1.0 g/mL and the half of the crayon had a density of 0.81 g/mL. Theoretically this is incorrect because the density of the crayon and the half of the crayon should be the exact same. The data was probably affected by multiple variables. This tells us that splitting it in half has the same density since the way the atoms are clumped together is not changed by breaking it in half. 6) According to my calculations the wooden block, Gatorade, alcohol, vegetable oil, rubber stopper, the crayon half, and the crayon should float in the water. This is incorrect because I got 1.13 for the density of the water when it should be 1. This mistake is because of things described in the conclusion. I made these predictions since the density of the wood is less than the density of the water so it should float. The stopper and crayon are at the same density as water so they would float in the middle.

Conclusion
The purpose of this lab is to calculate the density of various substances. There are multiple sources of error in this lab. When we measured a liquid we did not clean the cylinder properly so the different substances would have mixed causing a difference in the volume and mass. Also water on the scale could have ruined the mass. When we dropped in the materials the water could have been displaced. Another source of error is recording the volume of the liquid incorrectly. This is used in the real world to see if items will actually float in water. Scientists can test new materials to see if they float by comparing the different densities. A new experiment would be to compare these materials to different liquids to hypothesize if they would sink or float. Then we could test it. In this lab we learned how to find density, the same material in any size has the same density, and how to know if an object will float in water. This can apply to planes since you have to factor in how it will act when it crash lands.
