Jennifer Martin's Cultural Diversity and Practice with Australians of Chinese Background: Consumer Perspectives discusses the overview

of Chinese community of Australia and highlights their feelings towards the Australians (Martin, 1998). During the study Jennifer Martin interviewed various people in Australia, mainly from Chinese background and published her findings. As one of her interviewee quoted, "I want to call Australia my home. However there is racism in Australia and this decreases my sense of belonging here" (Martin, 1998). Issues related to racism and discrimination because of the skin color has often been raised in Australian media and people have a sense that the government has done nothing to avoid racism. As one of the Cambodian person quoted, Racism in Australia has increased because conflicts between religions and races will never end. It is the governments responsibility to minimise these conflicts. Unfortunately John Howard has done nothing about it so racism is increasing in Australia (Martin, 1998) where as other Chinese person was found saying, Its not so bad in Melbourne (Martin, 1998). I have been studying in Melbourne for a while now and though I agree that I have read news about various attacks on people at train stations because of racism, I must admit that I have not yet personally experienced any racism. I have many Australian friends and we all gel together well. I personally feel that if an outsider is coming to a country, either as a visitor or as a migrant, he has to adopt the local culture and must gel with the local people so that they do not consider him outsider and behave differently.
