I was thinking possibly after surviving a tyranid invasion as a sole survivor of a battle. Upon retreating after the deaths of his fire warriors to the swarms, finds a loss of belief in the greater good. Possibly after also seeing many other warriors fall or be infected by genestealers and turn on their own. This could be over a prolonged period of battle with the tyranids. Eventually he is abandoned by his ships (either intentionally or accidently during a tactical decision) then imperial forces show up and cleanse the tyranids. Changing his views of the Greater Good. I was thinking he could be discovered in the brig (ships jail) his captured gear in lockbox. And could be discovered by the team. His release and viewing of imperials not abandoning the crew to the orks could further increase his positive view of the imperium.
