MAP INTERNATIONAL | FEBRUARY 2012 | FIELD UPDATES VANIA’S TESTIMONY: Transformation and Recovery. Chilimarca, Bolivia Vania artived to Centro Una Brisa De Esperanza (CUBE) 5 years ago when she was only 15 years old. She had been sexually abused and came to the center to receive help. When she first arrived she ‘was “terrified and depressed.” She barely spoke and avoided making eye contact with others No one knew what had happened to her. "I did not tell my family what happened because | feared that they would not believe me. The psychologists from CUBE explained to me the importance of denouncing the crime committed against me and informing my family of what happened. The first person | told was my mother, who has supported me since the beginning—from denouncing the sexual abuse to dealing with all the papers at the prosecutor's office and more.” 7 (. c— e “For the first few months after | denounced the abuse I felt horrible. | did not want to continue the legal process. fet lke all eyes ‘were on me with an accusatory attitude. | felt that | was at fault for al that had happened to me and that | could have avoided it. ‘These feelings disrupted my studies; could not study. | had to repeat 10®and 11" grade.” “After participating in the different activities that CUBE offers, like group therapies and individual therapies, | understood that the sexual abuse was not my fault. felt better, free of those feelings of fear. But eventually the memories ofthe sexual abuse flooded ‘my mind, frustrating me and taking away my desire to live. | felt ike no one in my family or school loved me. So I took the terrible decision to take my life, The first time | tried to take my life | took pills, but it didn’t work. The second time, I swallowed poison. Soon after, | was admitted to Viedman Hospital for two months.” Vania was immediately placed in an intensive care unit, where she was in a coma for a week. She did not fully regain consciousness, however, for over a month. When the personnel from CUBE visited her, she could not speak, but tears rolled fram her eyes. Vania had lost most of the muscle in her body and was literally skin and bones. Vania, a strong and biiliant young ‘woman, lay there strapped to a hospital bed with life support machines and tubes keeping her alive. “1 was very close to dying. | must have an angel who watches over me. God has given me a second chance so that | can share my story with others who have suffered sexual abuse, so that they don't make the terrible decision that | made. Now I realize that life isa gift from God and that life should be lived as if each day isthe last.” “After my stay in the hospital, | continued to participate in CUBE's activities, where | feel happy close to other children and adolescents who have similar experiences to mine. Together with my psychologist Fatima, | have reconstructed my life project. She has helped me to regain the strength I need to achieve my personal goals, to finish high school.” ‘Today, Vania is an active and courageous 20 year old young woman. After two months of intensive care, Vania had to relearn how to walk and talk. In December 2011, six female youth from CUBE received their high school diplomas and Vania was one of them. In a culture that pushes rape victims to drop out of school, because they are seen as broken and unworthy, high school graduation is a powerful message that there is no brokenness that cannot be overcome when victims find a nurturing environment to experience resiliency and healing. Vania has become an advocate for other victims of sexual abuse. She has spoken on television, encouraging other victims to break the silence and know that they are not to blame. At CUBE, Vania receives and welcomes the new victims that arrive to the center. She is in charge of group activities, such as art and culinary activities. Vania is deeply loved not only by the personnel at CUBE, but also by the children and the adolescents. Vania represents a rock of strength, Vania is “applying to the university to study psychology.” Her reason: “I want to be to others what my psychologist has been to me. I thank God for allowing me to havea refuge like CUBE." MAP INTERNATIONAL | FEBRUARY 2012 | FIELD UPDATES
