CHM 256 Gravimetric Analysis

Application of gravimetric analysis

Application of Gravimetric Analysis

Used to analyze standards that are used for testing or calibration of instruments. To analyze the compound with high accuracy. Applicable only for those substances which form metallic compounds on ignition and which do not contain volatile matter.

Precipitation gravimetry
One application of gravimetry is the determination of Ag+ by addition of Cl- to cause the precipitation reaction: Ag+(aq) + Cl-(aq) AgCl(s) Apart from solubility of the precipitate, impurities in the precipitate also affect accuracy of the analysis. Because precipitation usually occurs in a solution containing other dissolved solids, the initial precipitate is often impure. Any impurities in the precipitate must be removed before weighing.

Electrogravimetry

Volatilization gravimetry

Particulate gravimetry
Physical gravimetry involves the physical separation and classification of matter in environmental samples based on volatility and particle size (e.g., total suspended solids). It is the most common type used in environmental engineering.
