How t o Sel ect t he Ri ght eSATA Connect or and Cabl e

Ext ernal SATA (eSATA) applicat ions range from a single disk ext ernal drive t o mult i-disk
ext ernal st orage/ backup wit h RAI D/ Port mult iplier feat ures. New generat ion Set t op box (STB)
and mot herboard (MB) product releases have also added eSATA connect ors. The market
demand for eSATA ext ernal st orage is on t he rise.

eSATA component s must address t he following issues:
1. Prevent ESD (Elect ro-st at ic Discharge) damage during connect or plugging.
2. Comply wit h EMI (Elect ro-magnet ic I nt erference) limit s per FCC and CE regulat ions.
3. Wit hst and t he more frequent insert / removal cycles (called durability) by t he users.

The select ion and implement at ion of eSATA connect ors and cables during t he design phase
is crit ical. I t is essent ial t o consider bot h t he eSATA connect or and cable. The product s
t hemselves must meet SATA-I O specif ied requirement s. Such product s provide t he highest
degree of int eroperabilit y and ease of implement at ion t hrough compliance wit h mechanical
t olerance, mat ed impedance, and cable connect or shielding. Product s supplied by companies
who are members of SATA I / O and have been involved wit h t he design and verif icat ion of t he
st andard are excellent choices.

1. The Ext ernal connect or has no L shaped key.

2. The guide feat ures have been changed t o prevent t he use of unshielded SATA int ernal
cables in ext ernal applicat ions and assist t he alignment wit h t he mat ing connect or.
3. Ant i-USB key feat ures are included t o prevent USB cable insert ion.
4. The insert ion dept h is increased from 5mm t o 6.6mm t o provide a more robust
int erconnect .
5. Full shielding t o reduce EMI t o provide an ESD pat h.
6. The cont act s are recessed in bot h t he recept acle and plug t o prevent ESD damage.
7. I ncreased durability t o 2500 cycles.

What ar e t he di f f er ences of eSATA cabl es ver sus SATA i nt er nal cabl es?
1. Fully-shielded cable wit h separat ion of t he out er shielding (for chassis ground) and
signal ground.
2. Hot-plugging support ed.
3. Maximum lengt h increased t o 2 met ers.
4. The ext ernal cable elect rical paramet er requirement s are different from int ernal ( xx)
requirement s as shown below:
A. Maximum insert ion loss (10-4500MHz) 8db (6dB)
B. Maximum rise t ime (35ps input ) 150ps (85ps)
C. Maximum int ra-pair skew 20ps (10ps)

Consi der at i ons f or connect or sel ect i on:

There are 4 basic types of connect ors.
1. Right angle surface mount

2. Right angle surface mount wit h reverse
pinout

3. Vert ical surface mount

During select ion of t he right angle surface mount connect or, check t he pin assignment of
t he int egrat ed circuit (I C) t hat t he connect or will be used wit h. A reverse conf igurat ion is
available so t hat t he connect or chosen can align wit h t he I C pinout t o avoid crossing t races
on t he print ed circuit board layout . The post size and locat ion of t he right angle surface
mount reverse connect or is different t han t he right angle surface mount connect or t o
prevent inst allat ion of t he wrong type.

I mpl ement at i on consi der at i ons:

The spring in front edge should be connect ed t o chassis ground.
The shielding requires a good elect rical connect ion t o t he shell of cable connect or t o
reduce EMI and ESD issues.
Check t he mat ed connect or impedance and impedance discont inuit ies. These are
import ant it ems for high-speed signaling.
Review t he compliance t est report for t he connect or and cable.
Review performance paramet ers t o ensure t he cable conduct or size is suit able for t he
lengt h.
Verify t he syst em performance.
