AWARD CRITERIA
1. Association To Wildlife= A wildlife films center of focus should concentrate on its subjects that of
flora and fauna. However, a wildlife film because of its diversity may also include the following criteria:
(a) A dual role meaning an interaction between the presenter/actor and the subject/s to
present a specific argument or point of view.
(b) Flora and fauna conservation due to the endangerment or loss of a species.
(c) An environmental message as a result of human development and interference or by
natural catastrophe.
(d) A scientific film depicting new innovation towards conservation and environmental issues
2. Technical Application = Aural/visual compilation, presentation and creative talent.
3. Authenticity = Claims made by the filmmaker/s in relation to the origin of the compiled footage.
4. Qualification = According to festival ruling, only entries produced after 2006 may qualify.

Wildlife Vaasa 2008 -International Jury Members

Mr. Sven Jansson (Sweden)
Sven has been working over 30 years as a news journalist and chief of different editorial
staffs in Sweden until 1996, when he decided to do something completely different and
related to his main interest for nature and wildlife. For that, he started the International
wildlife Film Festival Wildlife Europe, which was organized for the first time in Sundsvall-
Sweden in 1997 when he was employed by the Swedish Television SVT in order to
arrange the festival. Soon after, he setup a limited company, owned by six European TV-
broadcasting companies with the aim to stimulate production of high quality films in the
fields of nature and environment all around Europe. Wildlife Europe Festival was held
every second year and very soon it became the third biggest event of its kind worldwide
The festival was arranged last time in Helsingborg- Sweden in 2003. As many scientific
films were included, it was renamed to Living Europe. Living Europes concept is still alive today, as there are
plans for a new event in 2009 in Helsingborg. Today, Sven calls himself an Ecosof and he is preparing a book on
ecosofical questions. He is also a member of the board of the Swedish National organization Scientists meets
Filmmakers and he is also managing local environmental projects on his home island stn.

Ms. Irjaleena Eriksson (Finland)
Irjaleena Eriksson was asked to join The Finnish Broadcasting Company to work at the
policy planning department. Later on she joined the Nordvision office run by YLE, SVT, DR,
NRK and RUV. The next step was to join the YLE TV1 current affairs.. In 1985 she started
as a buyer of programmes at the YLE TV1 programme acquisition. Her special
achievements at YLE TV1 are the prime time one-hour wildlife show on Saturdays; the
prime time half-hour wildlife show and a one-hour history slot, all still going strong. After
leaving from YLE in 2000 she has been working part-time for production companies in
Helsinki and Porvoo, Finland. She has been a Jury member in numerous festivals including
Wildlife Vaasa 2004.

Mr Nik Van-Eckmann (South Africa-Finland)
More than 3decades working in film and television production broadcasting companies
including: ORF Austria - Malaysian Television - ZDF Germany - Channel 9 Peru - NBC
New York - RTL France - BBC and National Geographic Television (Washington DC)First
discipline is Sound production and design for Film and Television but expertise includes; -
cameraman - editor - writer - production manager and producer/director. Numerous
academic qualifications including a Doctor of Arts Audio/Visual Media Culture in Wildlife
film Production University of Lapland. Actor/Voice over artist for television and the music
industry. He has been also an important partner of our festival and a member of the
International Jury from 2002.

Ms. Oksana Lazareva (Russia)
Representing the new generation of nature filmmakers, Oksana studied five years
at St.Petersburg State University of Culture and Arts and after graduation she has been
working as a wildlife and environmental conservation film producer, editor and
administrator from 2001. During the last four years she works at Studio Nikola Film
editing full length and fictions movies as Alexander (2008), The Gold of Troy (2008) a 4
series adventure story; Catherines Musketeers 2007, 12 series adventure story; His
Majestys Secret Service 2006, a 12 series detective story; Favourite 2005, 8 series
historic drama) She has been participating and attending our festival from 2004.

Mr. Juhani Koivusaari (Finland)
Phil.lic.(zoology), special researcher / West Finland Regional Environment Centre in
Vaasa. An old-school biologist who has devoted his work and life to the conservation and
study of the white-tailed sea eagle. He has published a lot of research material in his
special field and he has written a book. In addition, he has produced a TV film about white-
tailed sea eagles together with his fellow researchers and filmmakers from Vaaasa .
Recently, he has also been a member of a local video group making nature films in the
Kvarken area. He has been granted scholarships in the study of environmental toxins
threatening the life of the white-tailed sea eagles. Juhani has been associated with Wildlife
Vaasa festival from the time of its conception in 2001 . A self-made humorist??

Synopsis: Hannes Tiira is blind. Every night he takes a solitary walk into a bird
grove that is split by a straight one-kilometre long forest path. The bird songs make
up a concert that Hannes wants to experience every night. He hopes to come
across a magical night that may occur just once in a summer. Each summer is
blessed with one or two magical nights. Those are the twilight hours between two
hot days, when the sound world of the grove intoxicates your mind: birds, birds,
birds!

Synopsis: Isan is one of the poorest regions in Thailand. Close to the border
with Laos, lies the small village of Bah Sarng-Sang. Here rice, the staple food, is
readily served with an insect garnish. But the use of bugs in Bahn Sarng-Sang is
not just limited to food. People use insects for the preparation of cosmetics and
medicine. Insects even play an important role in the entertainment. Here, more
than in other Thai regions in the North East, traditional Buddhism blends with
animistic elements and superstition.

Ahmed & the Return of
Arab Phoenix
Synopsis: Ahmed and the Return of the Arab Phoenix was shot in 2004 around
the Palmyra oasis, Syria, not far from the Euphrates river and the Iraqi border.
Despite its bad reputation in the international press, the Syrian government is
very much involved in the effort of protecting its natural heritage. This is the story
of a handful of visionary men who are fghting in the desert to protect what is left
of the biodiversity of Al Badia, the semi-arid desert steppe stretching from the
Iraqi border to almost the Mediterranean coast. Their efforts will be rewarded by
the discovery, in a remote area, of the last Middle Eastern breeding colony of the
Bald Ibis (Geronticus eremita) in the wild, one of the rarest migratory birds and a
symbol of wisdom for the Bedouins of the desert

of forests, swamps and lake systems. It is situated in the borderlands of those
three countries. Fenno-Scandian green belt is the biggest and most remarkable
completeness of original nature what still exists in western Europe .There are
several precious Natura 2000- nature protection areas situated in Kainuu and
Koillismaa, which have mainly been in a natural state. In some of these parts, the
signs of earlier forestry economy can be seen, like ditched swamps and handled
forests. The quality of these areas were tried to improve with the Green Belt Life-
nature-project, which was funded by European union in 2004-2008.

Synopsis: Lake Kerkini constitutes one of the most important and beautiful
wetlands of Europe. Rare and endangered bird species use the lake as a permanent
or temporary residence. For many of them it is the land of reproduction. Humans,
however, use the lake as a water collector and dont care for the birds rights.
In the summer, the willow forest which is next to the lake and in which the birds
nest, is fooded due to human intervention with dramatic consequences. The few
sensitized ecologists who live there protect the ecosystem and make public the
birds inalienable right to their own vital area. Panayotis Hatziyannidis and the
English ecologist and poet Gordon Ramell reveal the latest episodes of a drama
which has been taking place for years.

and managed to swim to Germany before being re-captured. Gaston became a
hero, even having a statue erected in his honour at the zoo.
The second story took place 50 years earlier and tells the story of a seal named
Ulysses, caught in Sardinia by a Milan photojournalist who, in front of the cameras,
tossed the animal into the famous Di Trevi fountain.

Synopsis: Every winter a nature extravaganza takes place in the waters of South
Africa. At the Agulhas Bank a parade of sardines starts moving north along the
east coast. Millions of sardines gather in shoals of thousands and are followed by
a plethora of hungry predators: dolphins, birds, sharks, game fsh, seals, whales
and man. Dolphins work together to split up pockets of sardines from the main
shoal and push them closer to the surface. These sardines shape into a bait ball
that performs a deadly ballet in which all hunters take part excitedly, while man
waits at the beach with his net

programs have failed. This singular study in sustainable autonomy is the brainchild

these Indonesian farmers.

there are huge dumps of garbage, which the strong Olkohons winds carry over
the whole territory. The island Olkohon is object of the world heritage of UNESCO.
Now people have started to remove the accumulated spontaneous dumps.

Jackals Out of Africa
Synopsis: In some cultures jackals were pursued and condemned as pests that
fed on parasite-infested cacasses. In others, such as Ancient Egypt, they were
divinely celebrated. This documentary accompanies a young scientist, who is
drawn to these mythical mammals and takes us on a journey to explore golden
jackals from, Egypt to the barren hills of Greece. Other showplaces are the reeds
of the Hungarian Kis Balaton, the Romanian Danube delta, the Austrian alpine
pastures and the forests of Croatia, where the jackals share their living space with
wolves and bears.

The Tiger and The Monk

Synopsis: Wat Pa Luangta Bua is a monastery of meditation, situated far away from
civilization, about 200 km west of Bangkok, and here silence, peace and harmony
reign. Every afternoon, a daily ritual is observed nonchalant Buddhist monks
take their ten 3-5 year old tigers out on a leash for a walk through the bordering
region of Burma. There are few monks living in the monastery of Wat Pa Luangta
Bua. Each monk takes care of one tiger and the number of tigers increased to ten
since two orphaned tiger cubs took refuge in this isolated temple in 1998.

cant even imagine events that unfold over several days, like a growing plant,
without time-lapse photography, but Time Limits uses a combination of amazing
new camera techniques, dramatic computer animation and the latest scientifc
advances to give a totally new view of our world and our universe. Specially
developed motion-control time-lapse photography will bring to life the slow motion

Synopsis: The frozen wilderness of northern Norway is home to one of Europes
last indigenous peoples the Smi. For thousands of years they have made a
living in this extreme climate, helped by their close relationship with reindeer. In
modern Europe it would be easy for this demanding lifestyle to fall out of fashion.
What can a life following the reindeer offer the young Smi? Two teenagers faced
with this choice are Elle and Inga cousins who both belong to reindeer herding
families. As they follow their herds through the seasonal migrations we see the
highs and lows of their year.

Synopsis: The experiment of repopulating the Taimyr Peninsula with the musk
ox, which began thirty years ago, has enriched Arctic biodiversity. Fifty oxen taken
from Northern America have by now formed a population of several thousand
head, providing population material for other Arctic areas as well. The flm crew
sets ut to search for musk oxen in their new home at the northern tip of he Taimyr
Peninsula in order to thoroughly get to know these bisons. The crew also meets
other inhabitants of these areas.

Synopsis: Neelakurinji (Strobilanthes kunthiana) is a shrub that used to grow
abundantly in the shola grasslands of Western Ghats in India. The Nilgiris, which
literally means the blue mountains, got its name from the purplish blue fowers
of Neelakurinji that blossoms gregariously once in 12 years. When the Western
Ghats of India turn blue, the tribesmen add 12 years to their lives. Neelakurinji is
a leitmotif in the culture of the mountain tribes. Kurinji is the fower of Lord Muruga
(Murukan). The Muthuva tribe believes that their god Muruga married Valli, a Veda
(tribal hunter) girl, by weaving a garland of kurinji fowers (kurinji malar) around
her neck. For them, kurinji is the symbol of love and romance.

In July 2006 Palladium was put down after breaking his leg at his home stable.

Synopsis: Before 1874, the dune areas of The Hague in the Netherlands,
contained many rare plant species. When the dune water was used as drinking
water, the valleys dried out. Around 1950, water from the rivers was infltrated
with too many fertilizing compounds, causing rare plant species to dissappear.
To restore the former wet dune slacks , the natural processes had to be retraced
and set into motion again. Only after that could the natural play of sand, wind and
water be regained. Now slowly rare plants and animals return.

migration of elephants and large ungulates all over Africa. Now, to ebsure that they
can once more migrate along their ancient routes, fve countries in southern Africa
are establishing a gigantic conservation zone: The Kavango/Zambezi Transfrontier
Conservation Area, or KAZA. By means of green corridors national game reserves
are linked into one megapark, where elephants move freely and people have a

En av Finlands stora folklivsskildrare, Samuli Paulaharju, skrev en fn bok om
Hailuoto i brjan av 1900-talet. Med hans bok reser vi i tiden och skildrar livet p
n i dag, bland annat hamnen och fyrplatsen Marjaniemi med fske, verkstder,
lotsar och ett hamncaf dr folk trffas.
