The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) CEDAW was adopted in 1979 by the

UN General Assembly. CEDAW is the body of independent experts that monitors implementation of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women. CEDAW Committee consists of 23 experts on womens rights from around the world1. What CEDAW means by discrimination against women are any exclusion made on the basis of sex which has the effect or purpose of impairing or nullifying the recognition, enjoyment or excercise by women, irrespective of their marital status, on a basis of equality of men and women, human rights and fundamental freedoms in the political, economic, social, cultural, civil or any other field2. This convention sets up an agenda for national action to end such discrimination. In Indonesia itself CEDAW appeared to give a socialization about CEDAWs principles and also advocate the government to implement CEDAWs principle. 3 The convention basicaly want to create an equality between men and women so women also have the same access with men in any aspects such as economic, political, social, cultural, etc. CEDAW is the only human rights treaty that guaranteed that affirms of rights of women to acquire, change or retain their nationality and the nationality of their children. States parties also agree to take appropriate measures against all forms of traffic in women and exploitation of women. 4
