1 Nets
4.2
A net is a diagram that can be folded to enclose a 3-D object or polyhedron. A net shows all the faces of an object. The faces are all polygons. Two faces meet at an edge. Three or more edges meet at a vertex.
Polyhedron is named for its bases. Prisms have two congruent bases. The other faces are rectangles that are congruent to the bases. Ex)
Pyramids have a polygon base. The other faces are triangles. Ex)
You should be familiar with the nets of these 3D shapes. Explore these websites with students: 1) Nets, Faces, Edges and vertices: http://www.learner.org/interactives/geometry/platonic.html 2) Explore how nets fold into polyhedrons: http://www.mathsnet.net/geometry/solid/nets.html Count Faces, Edges & vertices: http://www.mathsnet.net/geometry/solid/index.html

4.3 Surface area of a Right Rectangular Prism The surface area of a right rectangular prism is the sum of the areas of all its faces. It helps to draw a net of the prism. The net of a rectangular prism consists of six rectangles. These rectangles are not all different. There will be three pairs of congruent rectangles. (Front & Back, Two sides, Top & Bottom) Ex) Calculate the surface area of the following rectangular prism:
C C
B A
12 cm
5 cm C 4 cm
A 4 12 48 cm 2 B 5 12 60 cm 2 C 4 5 20 cm 2
Surface Area = 2 48 + 2 60 + 2 20 = 96 + 120 + 40 = 256 cm2 Discuss how this question would change if the prism was a box with no lid, a room with only walls painted, etc.
4.4 Surface area of a Triangular Prism Triangular Prism Five faces: 3 rectangles and 2 triangles The two triangles are congruent. base height The area of a triangle is . The base and height of a triangle meet at right 2 angles. The rectangles can be all the same, two of them can be the same or all different. It depends on the triangle.

4.5 Volume of a Right Rectangular Prism Volume is the amount of space filled by a three dimensional object. The volume of a prism will depend on the area of the base and its height. To find the volume of any prism you multiply the area of its base by its height:

4.7 Surface Area of a Right Cylinder The net of a cylinder consists of two circles and a rectangle. The two circles are the same size. So to find the surface area of a cylinder you find the area of the circle, time it by two and add the area of the rectangle.
