Animals and the seasons


How do animals cope with winter? Do they migrate, hibernate or adapt? Match the names of the animals to the pictures. Then match the animals to their behaviour!

a) This bird migrates for a distance of 10,000 kms! Birds navigate by the sun, stars and Earths magnetic field. b) This amazing insect spends summer in Canada and flies couth to Mexico for the winter. c) These fish travel 4,000 kms to have their young. d) This animal hibernates in winter in a cave or other snug place. During the deep sleep its body temperature is almost freezing. e) This marine creature travels from Ascension island to the Brazilian coast to feed. f) This animal collects nuts and food to see it through the winter. g) This animal grows thicker fur which changes colour according to the season. h) Some animals eat different foods in different seasons. This animal eats fruit and insects in spring, summer and autumn but in winter it eats small rodents. i) This aquatic creature goes to the bottom of the lake or river to find cold water and more oxygen during winter. j) This reptile usually finds a hole and stays dormant for winter.
