INTRODUCTION
TELECOMMUNICATION

EVOLUTION OF MOBILE MARKET

THE BASIS OF CELLULAR TECHNOLOGY & THE USE OF RADIO SPECTRUM

BANDWIDTH

MOBILE TELEPHONE SWITCHING OFFICE

ACCESS TECHNOLOGIES (FDMA, TDMA, CDMA)

1G

Introduced in Japan in 1979. The first commercially automated cellular network Radio signals are analog & modulated to higher frequency, typically 150 MHz and up. Features

Limitations

2G

Launched in 1991 on the GSM standard that uses TDMA.

Uses digital signal

Spectrum:- 800/900 MHz to 1800/1900 MHz Advantages

Disadvantages

2.5G

Informal term unlike 2G or 3G

Combines 2g cellular system and General Packet Radio Services (GPRS)

GPRS has data transmission rates of 28kbps or higher

CDMA200 1x-RTT, EDGE and EGPRS are 2.5g technology

2.5G

Data transmission rates of 144kbps or higher Slower network speeds than 3G

2.5g uses packet-switching as well as circuit switching

2.5g network can be used on a per-transaction basis rather than per-minute-of-use basis. 2.5g supports WAP, MMS, SMS, Mobile games etc.

CIRCUIT-SWITCHING

Physical path is obtained and dedicated to a single connection between two end-points in the network Ordinary voice phone is circuit-switched No one else can use the physical lines during that period It is more reliable but expensive compared to packetswitching

PACKETSWITCHING

2.75G (EDGE)
What is EDGE Technology? Extended version of GSM. Termed as IMT-SC or Single carrier History of EDGE Launched in 2003 in US. Three time faster than wired dial up modem. Global mobile data services.

EDGE TECHNOLOGY

Frequency capability and performance of Edge is more than 2G, GSM technology It helps to connect to the internet Edge technology supports the packet switching system EDGE technology has its edge because it can make use of both switch circuit technology and packet circuit technology.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN GSM & EDGE

GSM

EDGE

Global System for Mobile It requires any supplementary hardware and software Normal Speed

Enhance date rate for GSM evolution

Does not require any supplementary hardware and software Provides 3 times faster speed than GSM

ADVANTAGES OF EDGE

This triples the gross data rate for GSM Technology.

The access to the internet and wireless access points is easy. EDGE technology is the only technology that has provided the MoldCell user to make use of most advance multimedia services.

3G

What is 3G and its characteristics Frequency Bands and Bandwidth. 3G Pricing Companies providing 3G network.

Issues

3G AND CHARACTERISTICS

Gateway IMT-2000 Fast Transfer rate Network authentication Compatibility Uses TDMA and CDMA

FREQUENCY BAND AND BANDWIDTH

TRAI recommended 3 sets of freq bands: 450 MHz 800 MHz 2.1 GHz

Bandwidth required is 15-20MHz

3G PRICING

Base price of Auctioning the Radio Frequency was 1050 crores. Category A 80 crores (Mumbai and Delhi) Category B 50 crores (Kolkata and Chennai) Other cities- 15 crores

COMPANIES PROVIDING 3G NETWORKS

4G

4G refers to 4th Generation of Cellular wireless tech. Specified In 2009 by IMT-Advanced Speeds ranging from Min 100Mbps upto 1Gbps Following are 2 eg. Many others still developing WiMAX LTE (Long term Evolution) Works on OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing)

4G USES AND APPLICATION

High Network capacity Seamless Connectivity, Global roaming High Quality Service eg. HD live Gaming, live audio, HDTV video ,Mobile TV etc. All IP, packet Switched Network User Behavior Based data

WIMAX (WORLDWIDE INTEROPERABILITY FOR MICROWAVE ACCESS)

IP based wireless Broadband over long distance Alternative to Cable modem and DSL Connects Wifi to other networks like internet. VoIP, IPTV Service(Triple Play) Speed upto 70 Mbps, Spectrum 3.5Ghz QOS Support, Robust Security, Mobility Support Types: Fixed WiMAX (IEEE 802.16-2004) Mobile WiMAX (IEEE 802.16e-2005)

FIXED WIMAX ARCHITECTURE
