WIHA Area Rules

1. Obey all Kansas hunting rules and regulations.
WIHA areas are for hunting purposes only. Other activities are prohibited, without landowner permission.
Hunting is by foot traffic only. No vehicular traffic is allowed.
Do not trespass on neighboring property. Hunt on the side
which is enrolled in WIHA as designated by signs.
WIHA is open to turkey hunting April 1 May 31. Do not
enter WIHA prior to or after the contract period for any
reason. This is a trespass violation.
2. Hunters must be ethical and sportsmanlike.
Obey the safety zone concept. Allow a buffer around
buildings, homes, and livestock.
Respect the rights of the landowner and others using the area.
Do not litter. Take all trash with you.
Do not enter abandoned or maintained buildings.
Do not leave game remains in parking areas, roads, or
roadside ditches.
Treat the land as if it was your own and act responsibly.
Do not destroy or damage any equipment, machinery, or
other items left on the area.
Do not start fires on areas.
3. All Regulations for KDWPT Public Lands apply to
WIHA. The following are some common questions or violations. For additional regulations, contact a KDWPT office.
No target practice, no trapping, no commercial or noncommercial dog training, no discharge of fully automatic rifles
or handguns, no camping, no horseback riding, no stocking
or releasing of wildlife, no operation of vehicles, no discharge of fireworks, no fires, no littering, no cereal malt
beverages or alcoholic liquor, no destructive acts, including
digging, destruction, or removal or signs or vegetation.
4. Additional rules and behavior
Do not block access to crop fields or pasture land. Farmers
and ranchers may need access to their fields.
Do not park in the field access sites on neighboring property. Owners may need access to their fields as well.
Do not enter property with vehicles or park in the field.
Park only in designated parking areas or along the road.
Take caution to prevent blocking road access.
Do not open gates or leave gates open.
Avoid stretching fences when crossing them.
Allow farmers to pass with farm equipment and machinery.
5. Using the WIHA Atlas
The maps included in the atlas are to be used for general reference only. Signs will mark the actual WIHA boundary. In
some instances, the boundary may be a creek, river,
hedgerow, crop field, or CRP field where the boundary may
be difficult to map. Use the posted signs as the true boundary.

The atlas also depicts state and federal areas that are open to
hunting. Some of these areas have special regulations in
effect, and some areas may have refuge areas that are closed
to hunting. Contact local staff for additional information
regarding what special regulations may be in effect.
WIHA property can be removed from the program at any
time; in this case, No Longer Enrolled in WIHA signs
will be posted. Once these signs are posted, access is prohibited. For an up-to-date list of WIHA that is removed or
added, go the KDWPT website at www.kdwpt.state.ks.us,
click on hunting then where to hunt. On the atlas page,
there is a link to atlas changes after printing.
7. WIHA, CRP, Crop fields, and Livestock
Some land leased for WIHA is comprised of CRP grass.
Occasionally, USDA releases CRP land for emergency
haying and grazing. KDWPT has no control whether
WIHA property is hayed or grazed. However, in most circumstances, if WIHA is hayed or grazed the cooperator
receives a reduced payment. Haying and grazing may
actually improve habitat conditions on the WIHA property in future years.
Less than 25 percent of WIHA is cropland. This may include
wheat or milo stubble, and winter wheat. In some cases, the
WIHA that is enrolled may be in a crop rotation; one year
it may be winter wheat and the next it may be milo stubble.
In other cases, the cropland is accepted to round out the
other acres and make signing and access easier. Some winter wheat is enrolled for goose or crane hunting.
WIHA contracts are signed months in advance of the hunting season. At the time the contract was signed, the area
had suitable habitat and offered hunting opportunity. If
habitat was negatively impacted by the cooperator, payment reduction would occur. However, if habitat was
negatively impacted by weather conditions, no payment
reduction would take place.
As part of the agreement, livestock may be present on the
area. The area is still open for hunting, but precautions
should be taken not to harass or injure them.
8. Report violations to the local natural resource officer.
Contact information is listed on inside back cover.
9. Your behavior will decide the future of these areas.
Kansas landowners have enrolled over 1 million acres of
land to Kansas hunters for public hunting.
These landowners can remove property anytime for any
reason from the program.
KDWPT encourages hunters to be responsible, ethical, safe,
and courteous to ensure the future of WIHA.

Extended weather extremes will impact quality of hunting.

The following maps are to be used only as a general reference.
Signs located on properties indicate area boundaries.

This program receives federal financial assistance from the U.S.

Fish and Wildlife Service. Under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of
1964, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Title II of the
Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, the Age Discrimination Act

Using the Hunting Atlas

On each map, all spring turkey walk-in
hunting areas and public lands, including
state and federally owned property, are
marked. See the legend below for color
codes used to identify properties.
Information about a specific governmentowned property may be obtained by contacting the appropriate agency listed on

the back of this publication.

The spring turkey WIHA areas are also
numbered for reference. In a few cases,
several tracts are complexes of small areas
in close proximity and are listed as one.
Access dates for spring turkey WIHA
areas are April 1-May 31. The regular 2012
turkey season is open April 11-May 31. The

youth/persons with disabilities and

archery season runs April 1-10. During
this season, hunters 16 or younger may
hunt under the supervision of an adult 21
or older. Youth and hunters with disabilities may use any legal equipment. All
others may hunt this season only with
legal archery equipment.

Signage

Reading a Map
Within each township, there are 36 square miles, or sections.
Each section is 640 acres. The sections are numbered starting at
the northeast corner and going west. The section in the northwest
corner is 6, then the section directly south is 7 and the number then
proceeds east and zig zags back and forth to the bottom of the
township. On the map below, the sections in the four corners of
each township are numbered.
So, the section marked on the map below would be Township 12
South (T12S), Range 1 East (R1E), Section 22.

40th Parallel North Latitude

6th Principal Meridian

In 1812, the U.S. Government formed the General Land Office

to create a standardized system to more accurately define a given
U.S. location. The system developed by the General Land Office
is called the Public Land Survey system and is used in states west
of Ohio.
This system divides land into 36-square-mile units called townships. Each township has a township and range designation to
define its 36-square-mile area. Starting at the 40th Parallel North
Latitude, or the northern boundary of Kansas, townships are numbered moving south. Ranges are the east/west designation, starting
at the 6th Principal Meridian, which bisects from north to south
through central Kansas (starting between Washington and
Republic counties at the Nebraska border).
Take, for example, the map of Dickinson County pictured
below. The township in the upper left corner is T11S, meaning it
is the 11th township south of the Kansas/Nebraska border. And it
is range R1E, which means it is the first township east of the 6th
Principal Meridian.

Anyone who finds evidence of wildlife crime while afield this fall should contact their local natural resource officer (NRO). Details of the crime
and any other information, such as license tag numbers, dates, and times, should be noted. Local NROs can be contacted through county
sheriffs offices, by phoning the departments Operation Game Thief, 1-877-426-3843, or by phoning one of the numbers listed below, for the
county in which the crime was witnessed.
Do NOT use these numbers for general information calls. General information may be obtained by phoning the department's
Information Section, (620) 672-5911 or by calling local offices listed in this publication.
If youre an active outdoorsman or woman, or just concerned about conservation in your area, get to know your local NRO. They protect the
resource in your area. The following list of NRO numbers and the counties for which they are responsible are provided to help concerned citizens curb wildlife crime in Kansas:
