"That can be the difference between eating soup and real human food." One mortgage broker estimates that a family with a household income of $75,000 will see the amount of mortgage they can qualify for reduced by about $50,000 when their allowable maximum amortization is reduced from 30 years to 25 years. Some mortgage experts say that could have a big effect on the housing market. "I believe that we could very much see a reduction in home prices, at least in the short term, while things stabilize," says Halifax mortgage specialist Audrey Wamboldt. But even though the impact of all of these new mortgage moves is expected to be significant, a survey conducted by Pollara for Bank of Montreal found only about half of those surveyed were familiar with the changes brought in by the federal government. And yet two-thirds of respondents indicated they were familiar with the current mortgage rules in Canada. Only 45 per cent of those surveyed June 29 to July 4 were aware that the
Celebrating 60 years in business
maximum amortization period has been shortened by five years, the poll found. Even among those who were aware of the new rules, a full 26 per cent of poll respondents believe that the maximum amortization length is still 30 years. The limits on Canada's insured mortgage market are now back to where they were in 2006 before the Harper government started tinkering with the rules to allow more people to qualify. The Pollara survey consisted of an online sampling of 1,000 Canadians between June 29 and July 4.

The Suva High heard that former director Fiji Holdings Limited (FHL) Laisenia Qarase was one of the advisers to the Cicia Co-operative Society from 1980. This was revealed to court by Fiji Independent Commission against Corruption (FICAC) witness Isireli Mokunitulevu after he was re-examined by FICAC lawyer Michael Blanchflower. Qarase is charged with six counts of abuse of office and three counts of discharge of duty with respect to a property in which he has a private interest Qarase who was an adviser with Charles Walker for the co-operative society owned by landowners, mataqali whose land was leased. Mokunitulevu who is now the chairman of the Board said he was appointed in 2003. He said Qarase advised on the running of the co-op and investment and in his knowledge, he was an experienced adviser on the Cicia Co-operative plantation and also advisers on buying of shares. It was revealed in the court that Qarases successful advice led in the buying of FHL shares, Fiji TV and BSP shares. The court also heard that the cooperative also bought a few residential properties in Suva. To my knowledge, properties were sold and were used to buy shares with FHL with the help of the Fiji Development Bank (FDB). Mokunitulevu said Qarase did advise the Board of Directors on the purchases of those shares and also indicated that some money for shares came from FBD.
The court also heard the Cicia co-op have Westpac bank account where Qarase was on of the signatories. Qarase was one of the two signatories from late 1980 to the 1990s. Mokunitulevu said the rental income and expenditure for those properties were accounted to Cicia plantation and have received dividends on shares. He said now Cicia still receiving $80,000 where 20 per cent rate of dividends goes to Cicia plantation. The court heard that Qarase is now no longer the adviser of the co-op before the 2006 election where he contested. Qarase received $2000 financial support from Cicia on their support for his election. The fifth FICAC witness Adriu Ledua Ratumaiyale told the court Qarase was not present at most meetings that were conducted in Cicia. Ratumaiyale, who was a secretary of the co-op that time said the society was aware that the FHL shares were bought. He said even though Qarase did not attend most of the meetings, he managed to inform the committee about their shares at FHL. As a result, he said the dividends are distributed fairly to the clan members through the clan leaders. He said after the contest of the 2006 election, Qarase did raise the level of living and development Cicia where they had nothing but now have achieved something. The trial continues.
Fijis Ministry of Education is working on introducing Mandarin Chinese language in school curriculum around the country. Mandarin Chinese is the official language of the Peoples Republic of China and Taiwan. The Chinese Embassy in Fiji and the Ministry of Education in a government statement said they are working collaboratively to facilitate this proposal. Minister for Education Filipe Bole highlighted that introducing a commonly spoken language into Fijis educational curriculum will be an advantage for students. Bole said Fiji has taught French in schools and having Mandarin Chinese as another language to be taught will certainly broaden students understanding of other cultures.
He said while Fiji is building a knowledge based society and the study of Mandarin will, it surely inject excitement and students keenness to discovering more, is enhanced. Primary and secondary schools including Rotuma High School have indicated their interest to include Mandarin Chinese as a language to be taught in their respective schools. One billion people speak Mandarin Chinese around the world including Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia and the Peoples Republic of China and are also one of the six official languages of the United Nations. Meanwhile, all primary schools in the country are mandated to teach i-Taukei language and Hindi. English however is the compulsory subject for both primary and secondary schools.

The United States of America celebrated its 236th anniversary of American independence at the American Embassy in Suva on Wednesday. The National Day or commonly known as the Fourth of July, is an important day in the US calendar and set aside to commemorate the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4th, 1776, declaring independence from Great Britain. Fijis Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation permanent secretary Saipora Mataikabara spoke on behalf of the Minister of Foreign Affairs Ratu Inoke Kubuabola at the event and highlighted the history and areas of cooperation between Fiji and the USA. On behalf of H.E. the President, the Government and the People of the Republic of Fiji, I am honored and delighted to send best wishes to the Government and the People of the United States of America during this auspicious occasion marking the 236th Anniversary of Americas Independence, Mrs Mataikabara said. Fiji and the US share a rich and long
history of partnership dating back hundreds of years that we will continue to cherish. Our soldiers fought alongside the Americans during World War II and in the Pacific Campaign, in the Solomons and Guadalcanal. Many worked with Americans who were part of units that were based in Fiji during the war years. Our two countries continue to collaborate on issues of common interest, especially those that embrace democracy, good governance, and economic development. She thanked the US Government and its people for all its support as the Fiji Government begins preparations for the 2014 elections. I would like to convey our sincere gratitude to the US Government and its people for all its support towards the Fiji Government during this critical period as we try to tidy up our processes and pave the way for a brighter future for our people. Thank you for your assurances of understanding, encouragement, support and friendship. The Fiji Government also conveyed its best wishes to the US Government as it heads for the polls in November.
Fiji is again under the spotlight for an alleged lack of transparency in its legal system. The Chair of the Law Society of England Charity, Nigel Dodds, went to Fiji in November last year and interviewed lawyers, former judges and prosecutors. His findings have just been released in a Law Society report which says Fiji has no rule of law, no freedom of expression and the independence of the judiciary cannot be relied upon.
Mr Dodds told the reporter Fijians are living with a legal system that will not tolerate any action against the ruling military regime. "There is no legitimate way to challenge the actions of the Fiji government," he said. "If you manage to squeeze one through, then the official of the court will strike it out, so it's a very difficult situation for any society where there is no legitimate means of challenging the actions of the government."
A new report has found the Fijian legal system won't tolerate dissent against the ruling military regime of Frank Bainimarama

TRAVEL agents and massage parlours were found to be front companies of human trafficking and smuggling syndicates in the country, a recent report has revealed. The Financial Intelligence Unit said there was an increase in human trafficking and smuggling syndicates last year detected and investigated in the country. And the modus operandi for most cases was the use of travel agents and massage parlours, the unit said in its 2011 annual report. The report, released in Suva last week, cited examples of suspicious financial transactions which included a customer who, when quizzed about the large sum of money she deposited into her account, split the sum and deposited $4000 in her own account and $3500 in another account. Other examples of cases of suspicious financial transactions were telegraphic
transfers to a university with cash from a local personal bank account and business profits of a local restaurant owned by an Asian. In another case, the unit received a report about sums of money sent weekly from Canada for the purpose of house maintenance. The unit cited a bank account owner who posed as a government employee and received several deposits for what was believed to be payment of fees. The unit pointed out a case of tax evasion where a seafood processing business deposited large sums of cash into the personal accounts of five of its employees from 2009 to April last year. "Detailed analysis conducted by the FIU revealed that cash deposits totaling $2.1 million were made into the bank accounts," the unit said. The unit said indicators of tax evasion included the fact that deposits apart from salary were received in personal accounts.

It is important that you accept criticism in your line of work, senior Correction officers were told during a workshop on prison suicide. The workshop was conducted by former Chief Corrections officer at Aucklands Mount Eden Prison Faiyaz Mohammed Khan. Mr Khan, who is now with the Auckland Central Police Custody Unit, reminded the officers to admit their mistakes. He told the officers to learn to never let an inmate down. If you make a mistake, go and apologise, there is no harm in doing so. When you want something done, ask, dont order, Mr Khan said. After all we all make mistakes, bring yourselves down. You have to be consistent in your work, and frequently talk with
inmates, Mr Khan said. Officers were also told that it is important to know about the signs and symptoms of suicide in order to prevent it from occurring in prisons. Give credit where it is due. If there is a problem in your prison, make sure you address it straight away and dont leave it to develop, Mr Khan said. He also told the officers to learn to praise inmates in front of everyone because it helps boosts their self-confidence. Deputy Corrections Commissioner Akuila Namakadre said suicide in prison is one of the challenges for Correction officers everywhere and Fiji is no exception. We have had cases in the past and even attempted suicides and we look forward to learning how best we can prevent them from happening, Mr Namakadre said.

$400K Steel Press Machine Now Ready $498M For Domestic Violence In 2011
Sun & Bright Company Limiteds steel press machine, which will be used for scrapping or pressing vehicles for local use and export, was launched in Suva. The new $400,000 machine which was brought from South Korea will be used for pressing car parts or scrap metal. It will produce neat cubes of scrap metal that are then exported to South Korea. Chief guest at the event, Land Transport Authority chief executive Naisa Tuinaceva said: The authority both welcomes and appreciates the assistance and co-operation of all relevant stakeholders as we thrive to introduce new ventures for the benefit of all. Mr Tuinaceva said the De-registration and Scrapping is a major Key Performance Indicator (KPI) for the LTA and that 2012 was the year of change to better results. We are working with such stakeholders like Sun & Bright Ltd to ensure the accomplishment of this vital action plan is successful. The legislation when completed will eventually lead to a code of practice for a proper Vehicle Disposal Management System, Mr Tuinaceva said. He said that the system will address the execution of compulsory and proper vehicle disposal through scrapping of derelicts, old and accident write-off vehicles. This will also minimize the risk of the old vehicles chassis being reused or tampered, he said. Mr Tuinaceva said a policy will eventually be drawn up after due process which will make it mandatory for vehicles de-registration to be done and eventually to be used as scrap metal. This will ensure our records are constantly updated and accurate data on vehicles statistics is captured. Knowing the exact number of vehicles registered to be running on our roads will enable LTA to do strategic planning in terms of compliance/enforcement and revenue predictions, he said. Fiji recorded $498 million as a cost of domestic violence in 2011. This was revealed to the media by the National Substance Abuse Advisory Council (NSAAC) director Misaele Driubalavu. Driubalavu said the cost is increasing every year as domestic violence continues to accelerate every year. He said this is an additional $298 million from 2002. Academic at the University of the South Pacific (USP) Professor Biman Prasad confirmed this at his presentation on efforts to address the issue of domestic violence which continues to be one of the greatest challenges faced by Pacific Island communities at USP early this year. He pointed out that the government incurs the majority of the costs A Bharat Natyam group from India is to arrive in the country as part of the celebrations of the 40 years of Indian Cultural Center (ICC) in Fiji on July 24. The ICC Suva based director Dr Kamal Kisohre Mishra said the group of ten is led by one of the Bharat Natyam dancers of India, Dr Lata Singh Munshi. Dr Mishra said Dr Lata Munshi has performed at all the prestigious dance festivals of India and abroad and conducted many dance workshops and earned nationwide fame and reputation. Also he said if the weather permits they will involved with domestic violence where these costs involve police, welfare and prison services, as well as the costs of medical treatment. He concluded that the reduction in domestic violence can lead to economic and social prosperity. Prof Prasad said this is approximately 6 per cent of Fijis total GDP. Driubalavu said drugs abuse is a major contributing factor to women and child abuse in Fiji. He said they are mainly targeting secondary schools around Fiji as this recorded to be the most drugs and substance abusers. This is only possible if the ministry of education, non government organisations, faith based organisation, provincial councils, the vanua and private sector to collectively work to achieve their target. also have a show on popular inter-island ferry MV Princess Lomaiviti (sponsor). This will be a first Bharatnatyam in the ocean blue waters of the paradise, he said. The group is expected to perform nine shows including Suva on July 25, Nasinu on 26th, Taveuni-28th, Savusavu - 29th, Labasa-30th, Rakiraki - August 1, Tavua 2nd, Lautoka - 3rd and Nadi on the 4th. Meanwhile the president of the Then India Sanmarga Ikya Sangam (TISI Sangam) president, Sadasivan Naicker said the shows will be free and it will be a privilege for the people of Fiji to participate.

Seven volunteers under the Fiji Volunteer Scheme (FVS) signed their letters of appointments and also took their Oath of Affirmation at the Public Service Commission in Berkeley Crescent to begin their six weeks work attachment with the Elections Office. While briefing the volunteers, the Public Service Commission permanent secretary Mr Parmesh Chand said that the experience and exposure gained from this assignment will be remarkable and mutually beneficial both to the Government and the Volunteers. They will be able to get an experience of a lifetime, especially when the Elections Office is undertaking a major exercise involving electronic voter registration. "Doing voluntary service is a duty to the nation and your six weeks at the Elections Office will provide opportunities for you to develop your skills that will prepare you for permanent employment. It will also provide you opportunities to
demonstrate virtues of civic pride, patriotism and commitment to national service, Mr Chand said. He added that the Elections Office will be organizing an orientation program for the volunteers and will be informed on their roles and responsibilities. The volunteers will be paid a weekly allowance of $100 per individual. After signing their documents with the PSC, the volunteers were received by the Ministry of Justice acting permanent secretary Mrs. Mereseini Vuniwaqa at the Elections Office in Toorak. Since the launch of the FVS in May this year, there have been 18 volunteers who have been successfully engaged for attachment in various Ministries and Departments. The PSC is also working on finding opportunities for retirees to be engaged as Senior Volunteers, serving in areas of national and regional interest in various Pacific Island Countries.
Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama commended individuals who have contributed towards assisting those affected by the floods that devastated parts of the country in the first few months of the year. The head of government made the comment after receiving CAD$12,000 (Canadian Dollar) from the Fiji Canada Association for the Prime Ministers Flood Relief Fund. We are aware that there are many people who are assisting those affected by the flood through other means, Prime Minister Bainimarama said. Government and the people of Fiji are grateful for this assistance especially from those individuals who contributed
to this cause. Mr Tassaddukh Ali, a former Fiji resident from Nadi, presented the draft on behalf of the association and told the Prime Minister that there were members who also donated to private organisations that were assisting in the flood relief efforts as well. The Prime Minister said that the donation goes a long way towards assisting Fijians who suffered in the floods and thanked the donors on behalf of the people and the nation. Mr Ali extended the invitation to the Prime Minister to visit Vancouver where the association will be honoured to host him for dinner.
The Police Force is warning the public particularly businesses to be aware of fake notes. 25 fake notes have been discovered so far this year. The latest is from Ba where a Postal Assistant discovered a fake $50 note
while serving a customer. The note has been seized for verification while the suspect was questioned and released. The Force says this is a concern as it clearly shows that fake notes are now in circulation.

Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama expressed his gratitude to all former Fijians residing overseas for their continued assistance towards those that were affected from the floods that hit parts of the country this year. The head of Government asked Fijis Ambassador to the United States of America, Mr Winston Thompson, to convey his message of gratitude to all those who had provided assistance to the Prime Ministers Flood Relief Fund. He made these remarks as Mr Thompson handed a draft of FJD $212,765.95 (USD $120,958.88) that was collected through the initiative of the Fiji mission in New York and the Fiji Embassy in Washington. We had a donation drive notice on our website to either assist directly or to send money to our bank account. This amount is the result of those donating through the bank account,
Mr Thompson said. These are individuals who were moved by the plight of the people in Fiji, he said. The Permanent Mission of the State of Qatar to the United Nations also donated USD$100,000 to the fund. Some of the organisations that have donated include the Flood Relief Drive, Las Vegas, the Fiji Association, Brampton, Canada, Fiji Social Cultural Association, California, Sri Sanatan Dharam Satsang Ramayan Mandli, Canada, Sanatan Dharam Pratinidhi Sabha of USA and Sacramento and Skyfleet, California. Ambassador Thompson Addresses 2300 Health Staff Under Scrutiny Senior US Security Officials For ACR
Fijis Ambassador to the United States of America Mr Winston Thompson recently addressed 19 USA defense officials at the rank of Colonels and their civilian equivalents, who are studying at the US premier military training institution, the Industrial College of Armed Force, National Defense University. The Ambassador briefed the students on Fijis political and economic development, and on the recently published Fiji National Climate Change Policy. The group will also travel to Fiji on an environment study tour to spend 5 days here viewing firsthand the environment challenges Fiji faces. Ambassador Thompson spoke on the genesis of Fijis economic and political progress including Governments development plan towards the 2014 General Elections. He reiterated the Charter and the Roadmap that aims to achieve a truly democratic Fiji, and also reemphasized that systemic problems in Fiji require political and economic restructuring, which will require reforms that are absolutely necessary to move the country forward. On the National Climate Change Policy, Ambassador Thompson stated that Fiji is committed to playing its part in addressing the adverse effects of climate change globally. Climate change constitutes some of the greatest barriers to sustainable development with widespread and cross-sector effects, putting the biodiversity and ecosystems of countries at risk, especially marine and coastal. Consequently this has severe implications on Fijis economic development too with the countrys dependence upon natural resources for its primary industries of fisheries, forestry and agriculture. The development of policies in Fiji to address this concern reflects the growing awareness among island countries of the threats posed by climate change. A stern warning has been issued to approximately 2300 Ministry of Health staff for failing to submit their Annual Confidential Reports (ACRs) on time. Health Minister Dr Neil Sharma said whilst following up Position Description, senior management realizes that a significant number of staff at the Ministry have not filled in their ACR for the year 2011. Dr Sharma said these employees are likely to face disciplinary action if they fail to comply with the given timeframe. If this is not concluded shortly by officers and their supervisors then both parties will not be legible for promotions, acting appointment and local & overseas attachments in the 2012 2013 periods, Dr Sharma said. Meanwhile, Dr Sharma said a grace period until the end of July is offered to these employees to comply.
The Minister for Education, Filipe Bole has emphasised to senior staff at a meeting on the importance of teachers being well groomed and presentable in their respective workplaces. Self discipline starts with us. We cannot be telling students to dress well, cut their hair short, shave every day, trim their nails and be clean if we and our teachers are not modeling it ourselves. Bula wear should be limited to Fridays alone. Inform teachers that there is a standard dress code that all teachers should adhere to when in school, Minister Bole said. The Minister shared his concerns with senior staff saying that students
Teachers To Be Presentable
emulate their teachers which includes the way they dress and the way they present themselves in public. The way we dress shows how much we respect our customers who are our students. Students will certainly reciprocate the respect we give them. The casual wear shows the casual attitude that accompanies it, which means the casual presentation of lessons in the classroom which affects the learning of the students, the Minister said. Principals and Head teachers are reminded to always observe the standard dress code of teachers in their respective schools.

Ambassador Salacakau, President Dos Santos and Minister for Foreign Relations
At a ceremony on Tuesday June 12th, the President of Angola, Jose Eduardo Dos Santos, received the Credentials of Fijis non resident Ambassador, Mr Ben Salacakau. The ceremony was held at the Presidential Palace in Luanda, the capital of Angola. In handing over his credentials, Ambassador Salacakau, extended the greetings of Fijis Head of State, the Prime Minister and the people of Fiji. In turn President Jose Eduardo Dos Santos expressed a desire to get to know Fiji better as in Angola there is little known about our country. Ambassador Salacakau also took the opportunity to present a brief on Fiji. The brief contained the facts on Fiji as well as the Charter and the Roadmap towards elections in 2014. In a brief meeting afterwards, President Dos Santos expressed a desire to increase cooperation and relations in Fiji, offering to explore options on trade, technical and cultural cooperation. His comments were very timely as Ambassador Salacakau
had introduced to the Minister for Foreign Affairs a draft on a General Cooperation Agreement. It now means that pursuing this further will be easier as already the ground has been broken for its endorsement later. Ambassador Salacakau was accorded the full honour of Police escort, guard of honour and the opportunity to meet with all the Ministers of the Government. Angola has picked itself quickly from the ravages of a civil war that lasted many years, after only a little over 10 years of independence and peace, the ravages of war and resettlement. Barring a few problems, it is now poised to become a powerful economic force in a few years. It is a booming oil exporting nation, currently producing about 2 million barrels a day. There is construction everywhere. Apart from oil, there is diamond and many other minerals as well as a strong agricultural sector. Fiji would be well placed to continue to build on the relationship that has now been forged.
Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama who is currently touring Sugar Cane sectors in the Western Division, met with farmers in the area to discuss issues affecting the industry. He met with farmers in the two Ellington sectors in Rakiraki which comprises of more than 500 growers and spoke on further reforms proposed for the sugar industry. Prime Minister Bainimarama reiterated governments commitment in providing both technical and financial assistance including the adoption of result generating policies that will further boost efficiency for the industry. The sugar industry is here to stay and I want to assure you all that my government is determined to helping you realize those objectives, Prime Minister Bainimarama said. He highlighted that the initial $1 million that was transferred from
the PMs Flood Appeal Fund to the Ministry of Provincial Development will now be utilized by the Ministry of Sugar to assist cane farmers including repairs to roads and existing sugar crushing infrastructure. Other issues discussed included the adoption of stage fares for cane trucks similar to the Bus industry and the approval by the Prime Minister to have cane cutters paid every fortnight to coincide with the schedule for locomotives and cane trucks. He also confirmed that arrangements are being made to look at sourcing cheaper fertilizers from China which could be shipped by the same company involved in the Nawailevu Bauxite Mine in Bua. Meanwhile the Prime Minister used the opportunity to encourage growers to register using the Electronic Voter Registration process in order to vote in 2014.

ALMOST a decade after her children were murdered, Shirley Singh still lays out their clothes, makes them dinner and lights a candle so they don't have to sleep in the dark. They called her their tiger their ferocious mother who would protect them from the evils of the world. But she couldn't protect them from Max Sica. It is a truth that haunts her every day, a reality that has seen her attempt suicide, blame her only living child and push others away as she descends into the madness of a grief too great to bear. The tragic life of Shirley Singh was revealed last week through victimimpact statements read to a packed courtroom as her former neighbour was sentenced to 35 years' jail for the brutal murders of her three children the longest penalty in Queensland history. The jury was discharged last Tuesday but nine chose to return to hear Justice John Byrne lock Sica away. They stared in shock as the Crown detailed Sica's life of crime. Before he murdered the Singhs, Sica and a gang of thugs burnt down police stations, set fire to schools and fired a rifle into a house in a violent "rampage" lasting months, the court heard. This was information that had been kept from the jury, so as not to skew their view when it came to deciding whether he was guilty of killing his former lover Neelma, 24, her brother Kunal, 18, and sister Sidhi, 12. They folded their arms, shook their heads and waited for him to look up. Sica never raised his eyes. But it was the story of Shirley that had them wiping away the tears as they shared in her sorrow. It had been nine years since "that" phone call, Shirley said in her statement to the court. The children were dead, the caller told her. They'd been murdered. It was her years of torment that would see most of the court reduced to tears even Sica's mother, Anna Maria, a steadfast believer in his innocence. Sometimes Shirley would take sleeping tablets, drink wine and stumble into the nearby cemetery in the middle of the night, searching for their graves. On the day of their funeral, she went on a cleaning frenzy, telling her friends that her children were coming home. Once, she was found passed out in a park. It was Sidhi's favourite place and Shirley had gone looking for her. She stopped eating meat after seeing the state of their bodies after having been left in a hot spa for two days. She was told not to sit with them before the funeral, with others worried the images might haunt her. "I so much wanted to touch them but was scared as I did not want to hurt them because their skin was burnt," Shirley said. She became distraught when they were cremated. She wanted them embalmed and kept with her always. Later that night, she went into Sidhi's room and took her pillow. She hugged it as she sobbed for the little girl she'd lost.
"I then wrapped it in a blanket and held it in my arms, asked her for forgiveness for not being there and sang her favourite lullaby song and slept with it." She did this every night until the pillow was taken away. Kunal had left half a can of Coke in the fridge. She still has it. Sometimes she kisses it. The Singh house is a shrine to their dead children. The spa that became their grave is where she lights a candle each night "so they are not in the dark". "Even though people have asked me how I am living here, and my answer is, 'How could I turn my back to my children after what has happened to them? What will they think of me their tiger and not a coward?' " The police telephone call that changed Shirley's life in 2003 came to Sonia Pathik, too her eldest and only surviving daughter who no longer lived at the family home. Three bodies had been found in the spa of her parents' ensuite, they said. Her descriptions matched. Could she come and identify the bodies? She got off the phone, gasping for breath, the shock bringing on an asthma attack. "I am the oldest and I am the protector," she told the court through her victimimpact statement. I hated myself. I know what it feels like to be numb." For a long time she blamed herself. But worse her parents blamed her, too, saying she should have been there. "I became a forgotten child," she said. "My life will never be the same. They will not come back to me."

Fiji New Member Of Finance And Budget Committee For Ramsar Convention
Fiji has been appointed as the newest member of the Finance and Budget Committee for the Ramsar Convention meeting. Aside from Fijis election to the Executive body (the Standing Committee) of Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Importance, Fiji was also elected to be the Oceania regional representative to the committee responsible for budget and finance along with Australia. The new appointment comes with the enormous responsibility of ensuring that the Oceania region is able to deliver its financial obligations and commitments to the Ramsar convention. Acting Minister for Local Government and Minister for Transport, Colonel Timoci Natuva is heading Fijis delegation to the meet in Romania and issued a statement that there should be no room for free riders. There are number of contracting parties that have not paid their arrears which at the moment amounts to CHF 700,000 (Swiss Francs). Some members from the Oceania region have not paid their dues, Minister Natuva said. Fiji as regional representative will support any decision by the Conference of Parties plenary for sanction against those who in are in arrears. Fiji has always managed to pay its contribution on time and may possibly consider some regional project as a voluntary contribution to the work of Ramsar.

Fiji U20 team with the High Commissioner and Mrs Taraivosa Salacakau An African delegate to the International Organisation for Standardisation meeting held from May14th 18th 2012 at the Sofitel hotel, Denarau has contacted Fijis High Commission in Pretoria South Africa to express his gratitude for a very enjoyable visit to Fiji. In his email to the High Commission the Delegate said: I really enjoyed my stay in Fiji and everything went smooth with my trip to Fiji and back home. All arrangements were in place and we really appreciated all the efforts of the Fijian people (and especially government officials) to make us feel very welcome and at ease. We had a driver at our disposal who took us to the conference venue and back to our hotel daily and he was always very friendly and helpful. Our stay was very brief to experience the full culture of Fiji, but the bit that we experienced was very nice and very positive and I would definitely want to return to Fiji (perhaps for a holiday in the future). As a compliment for the friendliness of the people in Fiji we walked from our hotel to a nearby restaurant on the one evening and unfortunately became lost. It was just before 7pm and the last of the shops were closing. We managed to talk to a shop owner just before he closed his shop to ask for directions to the restaurant. Upon realizing that we were lost, he not only provided us with directions to the restaurant, but also offered to drop us off at the restaurant as we managed to walk in the opposite direction of the restaurant. We were really amazed by the hospitality shown to us and both I and my colleague left Fiji with a positive experience (and lots of gifts for people at home). I would also like to thank you for your intervention and for ensuring that my arrival in Fiji went smoothly. I really appreciate all your efforts. Meanwhile the High Commissioner Beniamino Salacakau and Mrs Salacakau played hosts to the Fiji under 20 rugby Team that played at the Junior World Cup Tournament in Cape Town recently. The High Commissioner has also been reaching out to other Heads of Missions stationed in South Africa. He recently hosted the largest gathering to date of Heads of Missions from the Asia/ Pacific Region. Following this he had a successful meeting with the British High Commissioner to South Africa Dr Nicola Brewer, where he explained the Peoples Charter for Change, Peace and Progress and the Strategic Framework for Change.
Fiji's Mission in NZ has been actively building people-to-people contacts in NZ in pursuit of our public diplomacy program as we seek to raise awareness of Fiji's national interests amongst future leaders of that country. Additionally the program aims to tap the Fijian Diaspora towards programs of cooperation with Fiji. ((Acting First Secretary (left) receiving the cheque from the officials of Fiji Indian Association towards the Flood Appeal Accordingly the Acting Head of Mission and the staff of our High Commission in NZ recently hosted a group of Diplomacy and International Relations Honours Programme students at the University of Canterbury accompanied by the Dr
Jeremy Moses, Senior Lecturer from the said university. The Acting Head of Mission briefed the students on the Fiji/ New Zealand diplomatic relations and also acquainted the students with relevant information about Fiji. In another development the President of the Fiji Indian Association and his executives has made a presentation of a cheque to the sum of NZ $4000.00 to the Acting First Secretary, Mr Niraj Mudaliar during their recent annual dinner night. The funds were collected through various fund raising drives by the association in Wellington. The mission has forwarded the cheque to the Prime Ministers office to be deposited into the Prime Ministers Relief Fund.
Fiji Mission Promotes Fiji Investment Potential in South African Investment Conference
Fijis profile as an attractive investment destination took another boost with the successful participation by the Fiji High Commission in Pretoria, South Africa at the recently concluded Tshwane International Trade & Infrastructure Investment Conference. Led by High Commissioner Beniamino Salacakau the Embassy highlighted Fijis potential as an attractive investment, trade and tourism destination. The Embassys booth attracted a lot of interests and the Embassy plans to repeat its display in other similar gatherings. Meanwhile the High Commissioner Salacakau met with the officials from Centron Energy, a South African company specializing in fuel additives to improve performance of engines as well as reduce greenhouse gas emissions from motor vehicles. This meeting came about as the High Commissioner stepped up his effort to bring an Investment Team from South Africa to Fiji. The High Commission hopes to include the Company in the investment team to Fiji.

A South African farmer is fielding phone calls from his sheep, after rigging them with mobiles to stop livestock thefts.
It may not be too far when you could just blink your eyes and snap a photo. Mimi Zou, Royal College of Art in London alum, has developed a camera prototype that tracks a person's eye movement and uses it to snap photographs, as reported. The camera uses biometric detection (the same kind used to scan irises for security purposes) to track the movement of the eye. When a user squints, the lens zooms in and when the person opens her eyes wide, the lens zooms out. To take a picture, a person stares at the desired area and blinks twice quickly. Because the camera uses a biometric technology, personal user data can
When the sheep call, it is always bad news for farmer Erard Louw of the Cape Town suburbs, as the phones around the sheeps' necks are only set to switch on when they start running, a sign thieves have cut through the fences. "As they run it gives me a phone call and says 'sheep one' or 'sheep two' and so on, so at least I know where to start looking because the farm is 750 hectares," Mr Louw told daily The Cape Times. Mr Louw attached the phone-like security device to the collars of four sheep in separate flocks after thieves snuck in and stole 27 sheep and 13 lambs a couple weeks ago, driving Mr Louw to rack his brain for ways to
protect his animals. He said there was no use calling police, as they were stationed too far away and in his experience either lacked an available car or the vehicle was out of fuel or missing tires - also, incidentally, the work of thieves. According to Mr Louw, the cell phones have already proved their muster, with one sheep-snatcher caught thanks to the device. Still, with theft attempts currently at their peak, given the long winter nights and early nightfall, a few sheeprobbers managed to get away, despite the device. "The phone did start ringing that night and I went out," he said. But he was too late.
AT&T has dropped its lawsuit against a Massachusetts businessman over a US$1 million ($1.25 million) phone bill he says resulted from a hacker's fraud. Ipswich resident Michael Smith is owner of the small manufacturing company Todd Tool & Abrasive Systems. He said Tuesday he's not dropping a counterclaim for the costs to defend himself in the legal battle his lawyers call unfair. The telecommunications company
says it has dismissed all claims and is "sympathetic" to Smith's situation and remains "open to resolving his concerns." Smith says someone hacked into his company's phone system in 2009 and made nearly US$900,000 in calls to Somalia. AT&T Inc. sued Smith for US$1.15 million for the calls plus interest. His lawyers say the company failed to notify him about the suspicious calls before billing him.
Sidney city streets are now mostly inhabited with singles under 30, as families are flocking to suburbs, a survey has revealed. Latest census data paints a picture of city dwellers free of children and wedding rings, while their suburban and country counterparts are twice as likely to be married, with one or two kids. Nearly two-thirds of Sydney city women have never had any children, the numbers soaring to 45,000, up 10 percent in the past five years But in greater Sydney, two-thirds of women have had at least one child and the average suburban family has 1.9 kids. Children under 15 years make up just 7 percent of the city's population, compared with the greater Sydney, where about one in five people is a child. The city also has fewer grannies and pops. People over 60 years make up just 9.8 percent of the population, compared to the suburbs where more than 17 percent of people are aged between 60 and 84. UTS fellow and sociologist Eva Cox said that the city attracted young women who would not have children until their early 30s and would raise children outside the city. "Inner-city areas are not really child friendly, there is not much housing for children," the media quoted Cox as saying. "You have an Aussie thing where you raise kids in backyards, we don't have that European way where you raise kids in flats," she said. Just 24 percent of people living in Sydney are married - half the rate of greater Sydney, NSW and the nation, where nearly 50 percent of people have said "I do." "We haven't got the idea of a city as a civilized space for families and older people, it's a young person's area," Cox added. Even property developers are designing apartments that are specifically for singles and women without children.
Southeast Asian Women Being Trafficked For Sex In Queensland's Mining Towns
Susceptible young women with poor education and poor command over English are increasingly being trafficked for sex in Queensland's booming mining towns, according to police. Mount Isa police district Inspector Paul Biggin informed the Australian officers that the inland Queensland city and other mining towns are increasingly being confronted with the problem. "Women and girls who cannot speak English, or who have a very low level of English, and a very low level of education, who are basically being trafficked for sex, from one mining town to the next," the media quoted Biggin, as saying. "They are working on a fly-in, fly-out basis, two weeks here, two weeks in the next town and so on; they are being advertised as available in the local newspapers, and they are coerced or threatened into doing it," he added. "They are being told they cannot go to the police because in the countries they come from, the police might even be part of the problem," he said. Biggin further said: "And whenever we have an operation to target them, they come into the station and you can see that they are being controlled mentally and physically and it's very difficult to get them to open up to authority and enable us to help them."

Russian women tackled a 50-metre sprint wearing shoes with a minimum height of 3.5 inches to win a 2,000-pound prize at Moscow's annual stiletto race. While fitness fanatic Marina Tuktamysheva took home the prize money, many others failed to even make it to the end of the track. The crowd gasped as several women came crashing to the floor, suffering scrapes and bumps. But fortunately, the ladies had taped up their ankles to prevent a fall doing any serious damage to their bodies. "I really love sport, I always keep fit wherever I am," the media quoted Tuktamysheva as saying. "I love having a beautiful body and I love sport in all its aspects," she said. Victoria Bukharkina, publisher of Glamour magazine, which had organized the odd event, commented on the race. "This is a great way for us to see and meet the girls who buy our magazine every month in person," she said. "This is a great holiday which unites fashion, sports, a good mood and trends and gives us the opportunity to talk to each other," she added.

John Lee (C), head of customs drug investigation bureau showcases Hong Kong's record cocaine haul. Hong Kong customs officers have made the city's largest cocaine bust, after finding almost 650 kilograms of the drug - with a street value of about $US98 million - in a shipping container. The officers, acting on tip-off from US authorities, seized the 649 kilogram haul from a container from Ecuador as it was being taken to the remote New Territories. Authorities intercepted the truck, arresting three local men including the driver. "This is the biggest ever cocaine seizure made in Hong Kong," Customs Drug Investigation Bureau head John Lee told reporters. He says officers found 22 bags with a total of 541 slabs, each with around 1.2 kilograms of cocaine. Mr Lee says he believes most of the cocaine was to be transported to Southeast Asian countries, but denied the southern Chinese city has become a transit route for drugs smuggling. The seizure was the second in a week. Last Tuesday a 63-year-old man travelling from Brazil was arrested for allegedly smuggling almost two kilograms of cocaine in his specially adapted underpants and shoes.

First-Time Drunk Driver With Four Times Legal Alcohol Limit Jailed In Winnipeg
A 29-year-old Winnipeg man who drove home from his cottage while he had a blood alcohol level more than four times the legal limit is going to jail. A judge has sentenced Jesse Friesen to two weeks to be served on weekends. Jail for a first-time drunk driver is relatively rare, but the judge said he wanted to send a message. Friesen is banned from driving for 15 months and also faces two years of probation during which time hes been ordered not to drink. The Crown and defence had both suggested a fine and a one-year driving ban, but provincial court Judge Ray Wyant said he was taking off the gloves. Friesen didnt hurt anyone or damage property when he hit a ditch, but Wyant said anyone driving a car while drunk may as well be holding a loaded gun. Friesen, who pleaded guilty earlier this week, had a blood alcohol level of .33, an amount the judge pointed out would leave most people unconscious or near death from alcohol poisoning. Full and empty beer cans were found in the front seat of the car.

A 51-year-old woman who tried to save her 20-month-old grandson last weekend after he fell into a Surrey swimming pool has died in hospital. The two victims were pulled from an outdoor pool near the intersection of 105th Avenue and 150th Street at about 9 p.m. The child, Ivan Yousif, died Sunday night. His grandmother, Warina Nissan, was in critical condition in Royal Columbian Hospital until her death Monday night. A witness told the reporter the boy ran away from his grandmother and jumped in the pool. Nissan then jumped in to save the child but was unable to swim herself. The B.C. Coroner's Service is
continuing its investigation. Meanwhile, a two-year-old girl was pulled unconscious from a pool in the 9600 block of 129th Street in Surrey Monday afternoon. And a 32-year-old woman drowned Monday evening in Gallagher Lake, north of Oliver, B.C. Police say it's believed the woman fell out of a paddle boat on the lake. Witnesses performed CPR before taking the woman to South Okanagan General Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The cause of death is believed to be drowning, with alcohol and prescription drug use as "potential aggravating factors," according to police.
The signing of two project agreements by Minister of Education George Abbott and Vancouver school board chair Patti Bacchus will see the B.C. government invest $26.7 million to build two new elementary schools in Vancouver. A new General Gordon Elementary school will be built in Vancouver's Westside at a cost of $14.7 million and International Village Elementary will be built in the False Creek North development at a cost of $12 million. Both schools will include Neighbourhood Learning Centres (NLC) that will deliver a range of community services to area residents. General Gordon Elementary will have capacity for 40 full-day kindergarten
and 400 grades 1-7 students. The NLC will provide space for a music program, multi-purpose area with a kitchen, flexible performance space, and an enhanced library and computer lab. Construction is expected to begin this winter, with completion expected for the start of the 2016 school year. International Village Elementary will have capacity for 60 full-day kindergarten and 450 grades 1-7 students. The NLC will be a multipurpose room located on the ground floor, adjacent to an existing daycare facility to maximize space. Construction is expected to begin in spring 2013 with an anticipated completion date of fall of 2015.

Most of us breathe shallow and unconsciously. We begin by putting our hand on our abdomen just below the navel. We inhale slowly through our nose and watch our hand move out as our belly expands as we breathe deeply. We hold our breath for a few seconds, and then exhale slowly out as you push the belly in as far as possible. Repeat several times. Breathing deeply and consciously from our diaphragm increases oxygen into our blood which relaxes us and decreases stress. 2. Anchoring: Visualize or Imagine a Positive Calming Scene When we learn the technique of anchoring, we can relive the experience of feeling good and calm. a.) Sit comfortably where you will be undisturbed. Close your eyes and relax your body by breathing deeply into any areas of your body, one at a time, where you feel tightness or discomfort. b.) Go back in time or create a place where you feel good and at peace. It may be a beach or a mountain valley or a meadow with a stream. Visualize or imagine this place with all the sights, sounds, smells, and feelings. c.) When you feel good and at peace, touch your thumb and 1st finger of each of your left and right hands together. Do this two more times, each time feeling the good feelings and peace as you visualize or imagine your peaceful place.
We smile when we feel happy. Smiling sends nerve signals to our limbic system in our brains, which creates a neurochemical balance of calm. Smiling consciously can relax us. 5. Do Physical Stretching
Our muscles tighten as we progress through our day. Stress seizes up our bodies even more. Stretching loosens our muscles and improves our breathing. If you notice birds, cats, and dogs, they stretch whenever their bodies feel tight. Apart from having a specific time to do physical exercise, we can stretch any time during the day even sitting down or on a plane. It is best however to get out of our chairs every one half hour and stretch for a few minutes. A great stress-relieving stretch is a yoga position called the child pose, which stretches the back muscles.
Any type of physical exercise assists us to breathe deeper and also improves circulation and the elimination of toxins in our bodies. When we exercise our brain produces endorphins, which create a sense of wellbeing. In addition we receive extra benefits when we walk or hike in nature. 11. Call or Talk to a Friend or Journal Discussing our feelings with someone or writing them in a journal can act as a stress reliever. 12. Pet a Cat or Dog Researchers have found petting an animal for just a couple of minutes helps relieve stress. If you dont owe a pet, then visit a friend who does. Both the pet and the friend will help you. Drink Milk- It's Good For Your Health
a. Locate, between the eyebrows, the indentation where the bridge of the nose meets the forehead. Massage this area with a forefinger for 1-2 minutes as you breathe out any stress. b.) Also find the hollow midway below each eyebrow and massage each at the same time with your forefingers for 1-2 minutes as you breathe out any stress. c.) Find the left and right occipitals at the base of your skull and massage each at the same time with your thumbs for 1-2 minutes as you breathe out any stress.

What does it come down to? In the end, you want to pick the kind of card that is going to suit you the most. Bad at paying back your balance? Get a low interest credit card. But remember that the 0% APR is not forever. Good at paying back your balance and want to earn some rewards in the process? Go with a slightly higher interest card, but with some nice rewards. It's all up to you, but pick the one which you believe will fit your personal spending habits and financial lifestyle. How do you know what sort of spender you are or how to select a credit card that's right for you? Generally there are two categories of spenders, one of which is the debtor who uses their credit card frequently, without paying off the balance. Debtors leave themselves open to having to pay interest on purchases and acquire an ever increasing debt balance. The second category is transactions, which also use their cards often, but pay the balance in full each month to avoid any interest charges. Select a credit card that matches your type of spending Because debtors and transactors spend differently, they need to look at how to pick a credit card and credit card offers from a different perspective. The person who pays their card each month is generally disciplined, and doesn't spend more than they can afford. Consequently a credit card with low fees and reasonably good interest free period would be appropriate for this category of spender. This is why you need to know how to pick a credit card to get the best benefit for you. Providing the balance is always paid before the due date, interest won't be applied. However, it can be a costly mistake to miscalculate due dates or overlook a payment, not only will you get charged interest, but you stand the risk of losing your interest free privileges and being charged from the date of making the purchase.
Another point to keep in mind is that interest free days do not apply to cash advances. When you use your credit card to withdraw cash from an ATM or a bank, which is deemed a cash withdrawal. This next point isn't always known but, when you make a BPAY payment with your credit card, this could also be construed as a cash advance by some merchants, and you will be charged accordingly. How to go about selecting a credit card if I don't pay my balance off each month? If you carry your balances over each month, select a credit card with a low yearly % rate. This is important, as you will continually be having interest charged on the outstanding, ongoing debt. There is no benefit to you in picking a credit card with an interest free period, as you won't be able to take any advantage of that. When you don't pay your balance in full you are charged interest from the date of the purchase, until such time as the balance is cleared. The best type of card for you would be a low interest, no frills credit card. What are the benefits of rewards programs? Rewards programs are applicable to cards where you get offered something in the form of a "reward" for using your card. These are generally intended for regular card users, and the benefits are varied. The principle is that the more you use your card the more rewards you get. The person who benefits most from these types of card is the one who pays their balance in full each month. Rewards program cards tend to have high interest rates and fees. When you don't pay your balance in full every month, the benefits are outweighed by annual fees and high interest, which can exceed the perceived benefit of the reward. If having a rewards card appeals to you, make sure you understand what is
When it comes to choosing a credit card, the choice isn't always easy!
involved when you pick a credit card. Does it cost more to join a rewards program? What reward is being offered? How much has to be spent to get the reward? Do I normally spend that amount? Do rewards points have an expiry period? It's a good idea to find out how many points you earn per $1, plus how many you need to accumulate before you can use them to obtain goods or services. Also find out whether you have to pay loyalty points as an additional fee when you want to exchange them for flights or other rewards. How to choose a credit card provider The Canadian market offers a wide range of credit cards and lenders. Although it is important to look at the interest rates and deals offered, it is also important to know how to select your credit card provider. The factors you should take into account when you choose your credit card provider are: Availability If you are a frequent card user, it is possible that you will contact your provider on a regular basis, so make sure they are easy to reach. Is there a local branch you can visit if you have a dispute, want to make payments, or pick up a new card? Do they have good online facilities for you to access your account and manage transactions? ATMs Are there plenty of available ATMs for you to use? Particularly since using an alternate ATM (not associated with your bank) incurs a charge of $2.00 or more for each use. Are the ATMs convenient to your home or workplace? Customer Service You may choose one of the major providers for the extra sense of security. However, being part of a large corporation as such can mean a loss in the personalized customer service you might get from a smaller financial institution. You need to decide, which
is most important - are you prepared to sacrifice a lower interest rate for personalized service? Fees and charges When selecting your credit provider don't just look at the interest rates, check out what other charges and fees are levied on your card. After looking at the fee structure you need to be certain you are getting value for your money and that the fees are not excessive. Rewards Does the credit provider offer a good rewards program? If you pay your balance in full each month, this type of rewards card may be beneficial for you. Extra card benefits Credit card lenders can offer a number of extra benefits on their cards including: Discounted goods and services Insurances and payment protection There are so many providers to choose from and all are touting for your business so it is worth taking your time to examine what they have on offer. These days, rather than trailing from bank to bank, people prefer to do their research online. You might feel some loyalty to the bank where you already have an account, but it really is in your own interests to shop around. Comparing interest rates and fees When choosing a credit card it's very important to make a comparison between the different interest rates and any fees that will be charged. This is where you need to take into account your specific spending habits.

Individuals with an offer of Arranged Employment, as well as those who are completing or have just completed a PhD program in Canada, may still be eligible to apply. As for the FSW stream that has been temporarily closed, Immigration Minister Jason Kenney has stated that the program will re-open in January 2013.When the program does reopen, it has been hinted that it will include an increased emphasis on language skills and younger immigrants. Minister Kenney has also announced the governments intention to create a new stream that targets skilled tradespersons. Regardless of when and how the FSW reopens, potential immigrants should keep in mind that it is just one of over 60 Canadian immigration programs, and that the door to Canada remains open. Below is a brief overview of programs that are open at the time of publication. Canadian Immigration Program Without a Required Job Offer Quebec Skilled Worker Program: Many immigrants have turned to Quebecs popular immigration program as a way of coming to Canada and obtaining permanent residency. They were selected through one of a handful of programs specific to the province. The Quebec Skilled Worker program is continuing to accept applications. It is a separate program from the FSW, and has not been affected by the FSWs temporary pause. It uses its own unique points-based system to assess applicants, and is open to individuals from more than 100 fields of study. Other Open Canadian Immigration Programs Provincial Nominee Programs: Almost every province/territory in Canada has its own Provincial Nominee Program (PNP). What should you do if you suspect that a child has been abused? How do you approach him or her? Or what if a child comes to you? Its normal to feel a little overwhelmed and confused in this situation. Child abuse is a difficult subject that can be hard to accept and even harder to talk about. Just remember, you can make a tremendous difference in the life of an abused child, especially if you take steps to stop the abuse early. When talking with an abused child, the best thing you can provide is calm reassurance and unconditional support. Let your actions speak for you if youre having trouble finding the words. Remember that talking about the abuse may be very difficult for the child. Its your job to reassure the child and provide whatever help you can. Tips for talking to an abused child 1. Avoid denial and remain calm. A common reaction to news as unpleasant and shocking as child abuse is denial. However, if you display denial to a child, or show shock or disgust at what they are saying, the child may be afraid to continue and will shut down. As hard as it may be, remain as calm and reassuring as you can. 2. Dont interrogate. Let the child explain to you in his or her own words what happened, but dont

A third of the world's population, living in developing countries, carries a dormant tuberculosis (TB) bug, which remains a lifelong risk. But the risk of TB breaking out is four times as likely if a person also suffers from diabetes, says recent research out of the University of Copenhagen. As a diabetic, a person is five times as likely to die during tuberculosis treatment. The growing number of diabetics in Asia and Africa increases the likelihood that more people will succumb to and die from tuberculosis in the future. University of Copenhagen researchers have just completed a major research project in Tanzania in which they have documented that diabetes is far more widespread than previously thought, according to a Copenhagen statement. The risk of dying from tuberculosis is increased if a person also has diabetes. In the past, diabetes was most commonly tied with the Western world while tuberculosis was more widespread throughout the developing world. "Our studies show, firstly, that diabetes is hastily advancing in developing countries, not just in Asia, but in Africa as well. And secondly, that as a diabetic one is four times more at risk of developing tuberculosis and five times as likely to die under tuberculosis treatment," reports doctoral student and physician Daniel FaurholtJepsen, who has based his dissertation on the study. The results of the study demonstrate that diabetes is a severe threat to the control of tuberculosis. "Tuberculosis kills more than a million people each year. The figure may be much higher in the future if nothing is done now," he said. "We should develop better international guidelines for a combined treatment of diabetes and tuberculosis patients as well as better diagnostic methods, which can cheaply and effectively diagnose diabetes among tuberculosis patients," emphasizes FaurholtJepsen.

Gulshan Praises Gay People, Says Bollywood Strongman Dara Singh They Are Talented Dies At 84
Bollywood action hero Dara Singh, best known for his TV portrayal of the Hindu god Hanuman, died at his Mumbai home on Thursday, days after suffering a heart attack. He was 84. Indian film stars and politicians alike issued messages of praise and condolences, while the prime minister lamented the loss of a self-educated son of the soil. I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing away of Dara Singh, who has been an inspiration and icon to many generations in our country, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said. Dara Singh was born in 1928 in the Punjabi district of Amritsar and spent his youth competing in professional freestyle wrestling tournaments. In the 1950s, he began working in Bollywood films and appeared in dozens for which he did his own stunts. The muscular actor is best known, however, for his portrayal of Hanuman in the 1986 Indian TV series Ramayan. Later in life, Singh served as a member of Indias upper house of Parliament, the Rajya Sabha, for the countrys Hindu nationalist opposition, the Bharatiya Janata Party, or BJP, from 2003 to 2009. He had been ailing in recent years before suffering a heart attack and being admitted Saturday to the intensive care unit of a Mumbai hospital. After doctors determined he would not regain consciousness, they
sent him home, where he was put on a ventilator. His son, actor Vindu Dara Singh, announced his death on Thursday morning. Dr. R.K. Agarwal of Kokilaben Hospital, where Singh was treated, later said the actors wishes had been to be at his home between his families. He passed away at 7:30 a.m. A great Indian and one of the finest humans, Bollywood star Amitabh Bachchan said in a Twitter message. An entire era of his celebrated presence gone! Actor Shah Rukh Khan posted: Wrestlers are made of sweat, determination & a hard to find alloy called guts ... most apt for Dara Singhji our very own Superman. Politicians also mourned Singhs death with messages on the social networking site. From the ring to screen, he won the hearts of generations! said BJPs chief minister in Gujarat state, Narendra Modi. The partys parliamentary opposition leader, Sushma Swaraj, also posted a message, saying Singh was a legend in his life time. Yet he was very simple and humble. May his soul rest in peace. Thousands of fans, friends and family members followed Singhs body in a procession to his cremation Thursday afternoon. He is survived by his wife, three sons and three daughters.
He is known as Bollywoods Bad Man, but now Gulshan Grover steps into a completely different role he will be seen playing a gay character in Ban Gayi Baat. The actor is quite impressed with homosexuals and says it has been worth playing the role. I find gay people extremely talented, extremely nice human beings, extremely interesting and they have traits and qualities that are worth for any actor (to enact), Gulshan said. I feel that gay people are part of our society and they are absolutely the part of the world as people with other sexual choices are, he added. He has been cast as a gay choreographer in Ban Gayi Baat. As he has worked in international films like Prisoners of the Sun and forthcoming movie Nephilim, he feels that people abroad are very open about it unlike in Bollywood. I know of people in Los Angeles who have announced themselves as gays
and unlike here in Bollywood where we have suspected gays, rumored gays, Gulshan said. The film is directed by Shuja Ali and produced by Sayed Asif Jah. For the first time Gulshan is playing a double role in Ban Gayi Baat a professor and gay choreographer. Asked if there were any apprehensions before he said yes to the project, Gulshan said he would have not done it, if it did not feel right. This was my first thought and this was my condition to my producers, director and writers, that if we are doing a commercial film, there should not be anything undignified. There has to be some standards. This is a family film. I dont like to be part of movies that are below dignity, or would hurt the sensibility or if any cheapness is there. So, in my career, I have not been part of films that are not aesthetic or which are not socially right, he said.

The big fat wedding of Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor which is scheduled to take place on October 16th has been post-postponed. The wedding date which has been confirmed by Saifs mother and veteran actress Sharmila Tagore as well as Saifs sister Soha Ali Khan has been deferred Bollywood is gearing for the royal wedding but there has been a sudden change of plan. The much hyped wedding of Saif and Kareena has not yet been fixed as remarked by groomto-be Saif Ali Khan. The twist in the fairy tale wedding date came into forefront when the Chotte Nawab was asked about his impending wedding with Kareena. He said, I havent fixed a date for my wedding! Im yet to meet Kareenas parents to
sort out the date ... the venue is also not finalized, and added, Its going to be a year-end wedding. He was voted the seventh-bestlooking man in the world and the best looking man in India by USs People magazine in 2004 but Salman Khan has maintained his distance from Hollywood, and says he has his reasons. The Bollywood star unleashed his funny side when asked about the reason at an event organised by IndoAmerican Chamber Of Commerce (IACC) Wednesday. All my friends who have gone to America, they dont even want to come back for a holiday, wonder why. I am an actor, those guys were the sensible ones, educated engineers, doctors, scientists. These guys went there and made a lot of money, respect, he said. Me, I am giving Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, all these guys a chance. Otherwise
poor guys, the 46-year-old said here in a humorous way. Salman also targeted Hollywood films. Amazing movies, they make anything look good. Like for example the names I took, Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise. We just go on emotions and heart. We overdo anything, I mean guys like us also look really bad, said Salman. He wrapped up the response with his arch-rival, superstar Shah Rukh Khans famous dialogue from My Name Is Khan: I mean my name is actually Khan and I actually am not a terrorist. Besides Salman, actress Nargis Fakhri was also present at the event, where Tata Consultancy Services was formally honoured as the overall best Indian Company operating in the US at the 8th Indo American Corporate Excellence Awards.

'Big Brother' House Probed Over Racism Row On Indian Origin Contestant
UK Government-approved regulatory and competition authority Ofcom will be investigating 'Big Brother' after it received 1,225 complaints about three instances of racist abuse in the house, majority of which were in support of an Indian contestant in the show. More than 1,000 people had voiced concerns to the regulator about the programme and its spin-off show 'Big Brother's Bit On The Side'. One incident - in which housemate Conor McIntyre launched a tirade of insults against Miss India UK title holder Deana Uppal - had prompted 1,108 complaints. Many viewers thought that it amounted to bullying. McIntyre had been warned about his behaviour by 'Big Brother', in which he had used a string of expletives and called her "a piece of s***." In another instance, which prompted 114 complaints, contestant Caroline Wharram had described a black housemate, Adam Kelly, as a "ridiculous gorilla" with "no sanitation" which some viewers saw as racist. The house has once again become a racial hotbed after a string of housemates made some regrettable comments. And in a further incident during an edition of 'Big Brother's Bit On The Side', former BB housemate Victor Ebuwa used the word "functioning retard" to describe contestants, prompting three complaints. Last year the 'Big Brother' was found to have breached the code after airing offensive language immediately following the 9 pm watershed. 20-year-old Wharram was summoned to the Diary Room and told that her comments were unacceptable after Big Brother took a zero tolerance attitude toward the remarks. 'Big Brother' then had warned Wharram that all of her comments were both "unacceptable" and may be deemed "potentially offensive." "I really didn't mean it at all. I just didn't think. That was really horrible. I'm really sorry," the media quoted Wharram as saying. She also told Adam: "It's not a personal attack. I do really like you. I just don't react well and I'm really sorry. I genuinely like you." However, it was too late for the housemate as viewers had already taken to Twitter to slam the demeaning comments and some even called for her to be expelled from the house after she compared the burly male to a gorilla. Former Big Brother series seven contestant Aisleyne Horgan-Wallace weighed in on the argument and said: "CAROLINE WOULD NOT HAVE USED THE WORD 'GORILLA' TO HAVE DESCRIBED ANY OTHER HOUSEMATE, THEREFOR IT WAS A RACIST DESCRIPTIVE END OF #BBUK." Another user said: "So Caroline called the black guy a gorilla.. Erm! And she's not kicked out whyyy #bbuk." In 2007, Emily Parr had been kicked out of the house for using a racist word to a housemate and in the same year Jade Goody, Jo O'Meera and Danielle Lloyd were involved in a race row against Bollywood star Shilpa Shetty.

Melbourne, Australia
The centre of Melbourne's central business district is formed by the Hoddle Grid (dimensions of 1 by 0.5 miles (1.6 by 0.80 km)). The grid's southern edge fronts onto the Yarra River. Office, commercial and public developments in the adjoining districts of Southbank and Docklands have made these redeveloped areas into extensions of the CBD in all but name. The city centre is well known for its historic and attractive lanes and arcades (the most notable of which are Block Place and Royal Arcade) which contain a variety of shops and cafs and are a byproduct of the city's layout. Melbourne's CBD, compared with other Australian cities, has comparatively unrestricted height limits and as a result of waves of post-war development contains five of the six tallest buildings in Australia, the tallest of which is the Eureka Tower, situated in Southbank. It has an observation deck near the top from where you can see above all of Melbourne's structures. The Rialto tower, the city's second tallest, remains the tallest building in the old CBD; its observation deck for visitors has recently closed. The CBD and surrounds also contain many significant historic buildings such as the Royal Exhibition Building, the Melbourne Town Hall and House. Although the area is described as the centre, it is not actually the demographic centre of Melbourne at all, due to an urban sprawl to the south east, the demographic centre being located at Glen Iris. Melbourne is typical of Australian capital cities in that after the turn of the 20th century, it expanded with the underlying notion of a 'quarter acre home and garden' for every family, often referred to locally as the Australian Dream. This, coupled with the popularity of the private automobile after 1945, led to the autocentric urban structure now present today in the middle and outer suburbs. Much of metropolitan Melbourne is accordingly characterised by low density sprawl, whilst its inner city areas feature predominantly mediumdensity, transit-oriented urban forms. The city centre, Docklands, St. Kilda Road and Southbank areas feature high-density forms. Melbourne is often referred to as Australia's garden city, and the state of Victoria was once known as the garden state. There is an abundance of parks and gardens in Melbourne, many close to the CBD with a variety of common and rare plant species amid landscaped vistas, pedestrian pathways and treelined avenues. There are also many parks in the surrounding suburbs of Melbourne, such as in the municipalities of Stonnington, Boroondara and Port Phillip, south east of the central business district. The extensive area covered by urban Melbourne is formally divided into hundreds of suburbs (for addressing and postal purposes), and administered as local government areas, 31 of which are located within the metropolitan area.
Land boom and bust In 1880 a telephone exchange was established and in the same year the foundations of St. Paul's Cathedral were laid; in 1881 electric light was installed in the Eastern Market building, and in the following year a generating station capable of supplying 2,000 incandescent lamps was in operation. In 1885 the first cable tram in Melbourne was built. Cable tramways were in general use until the 1920s, when they were superseded by electric motors. Electric trams were introduced into the suburbs in 1906. During a visit in 1885 English journalist George Augustus Henry Sala coined the phrase "Marvellous Melbourne", which stuck long into the twentieth century and is still used today by Melburnians. Growing building activity culminated in a "land boom" which, in 1888, reached a peak of speculative development fuelled by consumer confidence and escalating land value. As a result of the boom, large commercial buildings, coffee palaces, terrace housing and palatial mansions proliferated in the city. The establishment of a hydraulic facility in 1887 allowed for the local manufacture of elevators, resulting in the first construction of high-rise
buildings; most notably 1889's APA (The Australian) Building, the world's tallest office building upon completion and Melbourne's tallest for over half a century. This period also saw the expansion of a major radial rail-based transport network. A brash boosterism that had typified Melbourne during this time ended in 1891 with a severe depression of the city's economy, sending the local finance and property industries into a period of chaos during which 16 small banks and building societies collapsed and 133 limited companies went into liquidation. The Melbourne financial crisis was a contributing factor in the Australian economic depression of the 1890s and the Australian banking crisis of 1893. The effects of the depression on the city were profound, although it recovered enough to grow slowly during the early twentieth century. Federation of Australia
Tips for staying healthy on your long-distance flight Traveling by air cuts down on time taken to reach your holiday destination but make sure you take appropriate precautions while on the aircraft to enjoy the time ahead of you. Taking care of your health while air travel is important because traveling in a pressurized cabin at high altitudes can affect your health. Read below a few steps that will keep health risk miles away from you 1. Comfortable clothes and footwear Do not wear tight-fitted clothes and shoes. Opt for comfortable wears as they are breathable. Slip-on shoes are the best because you can remove them easily and massage your ankles. 2. Keep yourself hydrated According to tips for air travel relative humidity in an aircraft is less than 20%. It therefore becomes important to keep yourself hydrated. This is how to do it Drink a lot of fluids like water and
fruit juice. Avoid caffeine, alcohol and carbonated beverages. If you wear contact lenses, switch to glasses for flight duration. Carry wet tissues and saline nasal spray. Carry a moisturizer and a hand sanitizer to kill germs. 3. Stay mobile To avoid developing clotting disorders such as deep vein thrombosis it is advised that you always move around. Try changing your position and stretch your arms, legs and shoulders and rotate your ankles. As a mandatory rule, you must not cross your legs because your blood circulation is already slow if you have been sitting for long. 4. Walk Move out of your seat and walk around to improve blood circulation. If there are channels that ask you follow exercise advice make sure you do them.
This would keep your fresh throughout your air travel. 5. Say no to medications Unless recommended by doctors never take medicines. Avoid sleeping pills; they make you feel lethargic. 6. Avoid heavy meals Since youre traveling in pressurized cabins avoid heavy meals as they promote bloating. You can perhaps fast prior to your air journey and feast later. 7. Jarring jetlags Adjust your sleep pattern according to your destination times to minimize jetlags. 8. Avoid travel You must avoid air travel if you have cold because cabin pressure will cause more discomfort. But, if you cant avoid then chew a sweet and gently blow your nose at intervals. 9. Get some sleep Try relaxing and get yourself some sleep before you have an anxiety attack. If you have problems sleeping
try listening to some light music to calm your nerves. You may also use an eye-mask. As a potential traveller you must understand aircraft cabin environment and keep the above points in mind. If you follow these tips, be assure, you are ready to go!

"Its extra 12.6 cm of wheelbase translates into a rear seat thats so comfy and well equipped, passengers will be hoping for traffic jams." Riding in the luxurious rear compartment of the new 2012 Jaguar XJL is better than being in the drivers seat. Well almost. Trim options available for the 2012 Jaguar XJ But it would be if the big stretched sedan wasnt such a blast to drive. The XJL is an extended version of the XJ sedan and its extra 12.6 cm of wheelbase translates into a rear seat thats so comfy and well equipped that passengers will be hoping for traffic jams to extend their ride time. Theres so much room that even the tallest adult passengers can stretch out, or pull up the privacy screens and do whatever adults do in the back seat (driver permitting). Although theres a middle head rest and seatbelt, the rear is best for two passengers and both outboard positions are heated and have individual climate controls. With the console flipped down between them each also has access to the detachable touch-screen remote which controls the DVD-based entertainment system, including dual eight-inch screens mounted in the back of the front seat headrests and two wireless headphones. The front seatbacks even have fold-out trays that can accommodate a laptop computer, or - if youre old-fashioned can be used as a writing surface. But the XJL is also great to drive, surprisingly quick and nimble for a car in this class thanks to its 51/49 front/ rear weight distribution and extensive use of aluminum in the chassis and body panels. Think of it as a slimmer, trimmer version of its (mostly German) rear-wheel drive rivals. The only thing at all dated about the XJL is its six-speed automatic, which isnt as smooth as its competitors seven- and eight-speed transmissions but does have the standard paddle shifters that are pretty much mandatory in this segment (and which hardly anyone uses). Naturally, you get your choice of twotone leather and real wood veneers in several pleasing combinations. Our test cars interior is tan and navy with dark oak trim that perfectly complements the dark metallic blue paint of the exterior. But lets slip into the 20-way power drivers seat (heated AND cooled) because thats where enthusiasts will want to be. The V8 fires up via push-button ignition and the shift knob then rises from the centre console. Unlike Mercedes dinky little shift lever, the big, chromed knob has some heft, and lets you dial in the chosen gear. Its cool, but not when the sun heats all that shiny chrome. The base engine in the XJL series is a 385 hp naturally aspirated 5.0-litre V8. Supercharged, as in our test car, this engine produces 470 hp and is capable of taking the car from 0-100 km/h in 5.2 seconds. On two-lane highways, passing slower traffic poses no problem, even at half throttle. Given the smallest window of opportunity, the XJL can rocket from 80 to loseyour-licence in a couple of heartbeats. Want even more performance? XJL Supersport comes with a 510-hp version of the supercharged V8. The only time youll notice the XJLs extra length is when parallel parking. Otherwise, this drives like a much smaller car with quick, precise steering and near zero body roll in hard cornering. Braking is superb, although a little too abrupt when youre using the optional adaptive cruise control and quickly come up to slower traffic. Recovering your set speed also seems to take longer than necessary in this mode. Nice touches abound, such as blind spot monitors, a glove box that opens at the slightest touch, a 1200-watt sound system with iPod connectivity and power mirrors that fold in to prevent damage - either accidentally or on purpose - when the car is parked and the doors locked. Of course, all this luxury and performance has a price. And Ive left it for last because if you have to ask How much? you probably cant afford it. Our XJL Supercharged has a base MSRP of $108,500 and is $116,600 as tested. And thats before taxes. For the economy minded (everything is relative, even in this price range) the base XJL Portfolio starts at $95,500 and the regular length XJ sedan at $88,000.

A phone scam that ranked number one last year for the Better Business Bureau of Mainland BC (BBB) is back in B.C. again. Callers claim that the persons computer is compromised and they are requesting access in an attempt to bilk consumers out of dollars while at the same time giving them access to personal data. The virus fixing scam was particularly rampant across Canada last year and we are having similar reports again, says Danielle Primrose, BBB President and CEO. Scammers are trying to capitalize on the publics fear that that their computer has been compromised. Consumers who have contacted BBB to report their experience say that the scam always starts the same way: the phone rings at their home, and the caller asks for the householder, quoting their name and address before stating that there was a report from your internet service provider of serious virus problems from your computer. In order to fix it, the computer owner is directed to a website and told to download a program that hands over remote access to the computer. And then comes time to pay a fee for a subscription to this preventative service. The catch: there was never anything wrong with the computer, and the owner has given a complete stranger access to every piece of data on their
computer. The company that is currently doing cold calls appears to be going under the name "Swap PC Care," which appears to be based in India according to its website. BBB attempted to contact the company whose agent confirmed that they are calling Canadians, but refused to provide any further information. BBB advises the public that these phony phone calls are common, and people should: Treat all unsolicited phone calls with skepticism. Check with the organization directly that the caller is claiming to be from, using the contact numbers found on their website. Do not provide any personal information. Many of these scam calls are an attempt to steal your identity, not just your money. Dont provide personal information over the telephone. Never provide credit or debit card information for payment. You may be able to reverse charges made through your credit card, but youve given enough information for fraudsters to use your account for other transactions. And debit purchases are difficult to reverse. Report any fraudulent activity, especially if youve been a victim. Consumers should report any fraudulent activity to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1 (888) 495-8501 or www.antifraudcentre.ca.

Dan Ellis has opinions and isnt afraid to express them through various means. Nearly two years ago, the goaltender vented via his Twitter account about a personal level of frustration regarding the 24-per-cent pay cut that was part of the expiring collective bargaining agreement. It was met with a public backlash and he retracted the statement. Earlier this week, the unrestricted free agent took to his email account and reached out to this reporter to trumpet how good a fit he would be as a backup to Cory Schneider next NHL season. How much game the 32-year-old stopper has left after appearing in just 10 games last season behind Anaheim Ducks workhorse Jonas Hiller is debatable. Especially after undergoing hernia surgery in February. But his willingness to sell himself isnt up for debate. I would love to back up Cory if the spot becomes available, Ellis said in the email. Helping young goalies get to their full potential is fun to be a part of. Sometimes just lightening their load makes all the difference in the world. As Vancouver management mulls over trade offers for Roberto Luongo while also waiting to see next week whether coveted UFA winger Shane Doan remains in Phoenix or considers the Canucks the cream of 16 suitors there are options to bridge the goaltending gap until Eddie Lack is ready to be a prime-time crease companion for Schneider. Some are less expensive than Ellis, who pocketed $1.5 million US for going just 1-5-0 with a 2.72 goals-against average and .911 saves percentage. Hes far removed from a career-best 23-10-3 season with the Nashville Predators in 2007-08 that included a 2.34 GAA, .924 saves percentage and then spectacular postseason showings against the Detroit Red Wings, including a 52-save performance in a 2-1 overtime loss during the six-game series setback. Ellis and Schneider share something in common in being represented by agent Mike Liut, but Ellis said there hasnt been contact with the Canucks since free agency commenced. So, hes selling himself. Im still looking and there are some options in Europe, but I think Ive got more than enough to give in the NHL, Ellis said Wednesday from his offseason home in Omaha, Neb. That [Europe] is not an avenue I want to look into just yet. Ive been in the NHL for five years and every year it seems like Ive been in a 1A and 1B situation.
I'd Make Great Backup For Canucks' Cory Schneider, Says UFA Dan Ellis
Forget about Jones vs. Anderson Silva. I realize those are strong words. That's a fight that a lot of people want to see. You can't call yourself an MMA fan if you're not positively salivating at the idea of the reigning middleweight champion of the worldand the greatest fighter in the history of the sportmoving up a weight class to face the man many believe could be the future of mixed martial arts. It's a story that writes itself. Unfortunately, it's a story that'll never be written. Silva doesn't want to fight Jones, and can you blame him? He might be the greatest fighter of all time, so why risk that reputation by putting it on the line against a guy who has 14 years and 20 pounds on you? "The Spider" is a brand. Risking your health against someone like Jones isn't a smart business decision, even though it would undoubtedly be the biggest fight in UFC history and would make both men much wealthier than they already are. Which is to say, wealthy enough. Yeah, it's not happening. So why not turn our eyes towards something that can actually happen? And not just something that could happen down the road, but something that might just happen a year or so down the road? Think about Jones vs. Daniel Cormier. Yeah, Cormier nearly killed himself trying to cut to 211 pounds during his last bid at the Olympics. But he will tell you that he wasn't exactly cutting weight the smart way. Rather than diet
down and make a targeted cut at the weight, Cormier instead chose to stay at his normal weight and then rid himself of all body water in a desperation cut. It just doesn't work that way, and it didn't work for Cormier. But that doesn't mean light heavyweight is out of the question. All he would need to do is diet himself down to 220-225 pounds or soan easy task for Cormierand then the cut to 205 would be simple. Imagine, if you will, that Jones beats Dan Henderson (which he will) and Alexander Gustafsson (which he will). Imagine that Cormier gets by Jeff Monson or Tim Sylvia or any other heavyweight Zuffa can find to sign a one-fight Strikeforce deal for the express purposes of facing one of the best young heavyweights in the world. Well, Cormier would be moving to the UFC. And according to Dana White, he'd be able to contend for a title. And instead of sticking around and clogging up the ranks with his buddy Cain Velasquez, he could move down to 205 and get an immediate shot at one of the best fighters in the world. And what a fight it would be. What a style match. What an interesting contrast. The Olympic wrestler versus the JUCO champion that turned himself into one of the best fighters in the world. You can't tell me you wouldn't love to see it, because you would. And if things play out the way I think they will over the next eight months or so, it's a fight we'll all be looking forward to in 2013.

In his first season with the Predators, Ellis worked with Chris Mason and then wrestled away the starting role. In 2008-09 it was Pekka Rinne who reversed the situation before Ellis worked in tandem with Mike Smith and Dwayne Roloson in Tampa and then Hiller in Anaheim. Ive been able to push my partner but also help make him better, Ellis added. And I understand my role. I knew Hiller was the guy. Rather than trying to steal the net, you try to provide minutes but help your partner be the best he can be. Its a different dynamic, but when the role is clarified, its a lot easier. The 1A and 1B can change and theres a different mindset and every single game you dont know whats going to happen. Knowing Pekka and Jonas [were starters] youre able to adapt to that and manage your game. Ellis believes hell adapt better next season following the surgery that allowed him to return to the crease for the final week of the regular season. The procedure was the end result of a November groin pull that became a tear because Ellis returned in a week after the initial pull to spell the workhorse Hiller. But the condition worsened. Hiller seemed to be getting tired because he was playing every night, Ellis said of the starter who, along with Rinne, logged a league high 73 games. I battled through a couple of months and took meds but eventually the groin just kind of gave way and snapped off. I feel better now and more flexible than I did before. The Canucks can go a number of ways to find the right fit for Schneider. The UFA market is shallow and aging and includes under-performers in former Canucks Alex Auld (31, $1 million) and Brent Johnson (35, $600,000) as well as Marty Turco (36, $600,000). The Canucks could take a goaltender back in a Luongo swap or trade for one, especially if Phoenix is willing to part with former Canuck Jason LaBarbera, 32, who has a year left at $1.25 million. Then again, Ellis might be a financial fit, too. Especially if hes willing to take less and a short term to accommodate Lacks learning curve. Whatever is best for the team, stressed Ellis, who has kept in contact with former Predators teammate Dan Hamhuis. Ive never been a guy who chased the money. Winning replaces any amount of money. Im at the point where I want to help a team win the Stanley Cup with whatever role that is. I feel I can bring those quality minutes.

All three Canadian MLS teams made moves Wednesday with the Vancouver Whitecaps selling midfielder Davide Chiumiento, the Montreal Impact dealing forward Justin Braun and Toronto FC parting ways with forward Nick Soolsma. The Whitecaps sold Chiumiento, a speedy playmaker, to FC Zurich. The 27-year-old Swiss international joined the MLS team in August 2010 after spending four seasons in his native Switzerland three with FC Luzern, and one with Berner Sport Club (BSC) Young Boys. This is a great opportunity for him to be closer to his family while continuing his soccer career, Vancouver head coach Martin Rennie said in a statement Wednesday prior to the Whitecaps game in Toronto. We would like to thank Davide for all of his contributions to the club and wish him the best of luck in the future. Chiumiento had five assists in 16
Ecuadors LDU Quito had been finalized. The South American club did not wait to make it official, introducing Plata at a news conference several days before the TFC release. The Soolsma and Plata moves will free up salary space to help head coach Paul Mariner reinforce his roster.
