Mathematics Form 4 Teaching Plan: Lesson 86

Tangent to a Circle
Learning Objective: Pupils should be able to: Understand the properties of a tangent to a circle. Syllabus Correlation: Form 4 Mathematics Learning Area 8: Circle III Unit 1: Understand and use the concept of tangents to a circle. Learning Outcome: By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to: Identify tangents to a circle. Make inference that a tangent to a circle is a straight line perpendicular to the radius that passes through the contact point.

Previous Knowledge: Pupils have learnt how to: Draw a circle. Draw the radius of a circle.

Concept(s) Introduced: Tangent to a circle. Skills Covered: Identifying a tangent to a circle. Making an inference and showing that a tangent to a circle is perpendicular to the radius of that circle.

Vocabulary/New Words: Circle Tangent to a circle Perpendicular Radius

Value(s) Incorporated: Having critical and analytical thinking Thinking rationally. Honest and accurate.

Point(s) to Note: Ensure that pupils can state the properties of a tangent to a circle.

Teaching Strategies Set Induction The introduction begins with a problem posed to the pupils about finding a strategic location for a new high tech information centre building that will benefit the community from three places, Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Klang. Teacher should encourage pupils to try to solve this problem first using what they have learnt before. After about 5 minutes, Teacher can continue with the courseware and show how to find this location. The tangents to a circle is then introduced to pupils. Component: Introduction Time: 8 minutes. Steps 1. Teacher gives explanation about the definition of a tangent to a circle. Stress that the tangent must only touch or intersect the circle at one point only. The next frame shows the difference between a tangent to a circle and a secant line. Then, Teacher shows that a radius and a diameter are also not tangents to a circle. When the frame of a boy playing with a stick and an old wheel, Teacher could ask pupils if they have ever played the game before. Discuss a bit of the game to add more interest to the topic. Component: Content Time: 10 minutes For the next property of a tangent to a line, Teacher starts with a secant line. Tell pupils that the line is going to be move so that the line will only touch the circle at one point only. Ask pupils to observe what happens to the angle between the secant line and the radius that intersects with it. At the end of this frame, ask pupils to make an inference about the tangent to a circle and the radius of that circle. Ask one pupil to write that inference on the whiteboard. The next frame test pupils the accuracy of pupils inference. Compare what was written on the whiteboard with the one on screen. Discuss any differences, if any, so that pupils will be clear on this property of a tangent to a circle. Component: Content Time: 15 minutes 2. For the first activity, let pupils have their turns extending any of the lines and then determining whether the lines are tangents to the circle. Ask them first about which end of the line should be extended. Component: Activity 1 Time: 5 minutes 3. For the second activity, Teacher could also let pupils have their turns to measure the angles using the protractor given in the courseware. Ensure that they understand that only the line that is perpendicular to the radius of the circle is the tangent. Component: Activity 2 Time: 5 minutes

4. There are 3 sets of questions to be answered. The first set is a multiplechoice type of questions. The second is a matching exercise and the third one is a True or False statements. Component: Exercise Time: 10 minutes Summary Teacher summarizes what pupils have learnt according to the chart on the screen. Teacher can ask pupils for any examples in real life that looks like a tangent to a circle, for example, on a bicycle. Component: Summary Time: 5 minutes Other Suggestion(s) Teacher can distribute the activity sheets which is given in the PDF format and / or the exercises in the textbook as homework. Suggestions on how to use the components in this lesson: Approach 1 For average learners, Teacher can teach the lesson according to the sequence shown in the lesson which is from the Introduction component, then proceeding to the Content, Activity, Exercise and Summary components. Approach 2 For fast learners, Teacher can begin the lesson with some of the Contents, Activity or Exercise component, whichever is more suitable. Please refer to the textbook if necessary.
